I felt the radiator & was not too hot, so I tot OK. But when I opened it all hell broke loose with coolant spraying all over the place.

Other that touching the radiator pipe to feel how hot its is like Xtraun mentioned, another safety precautious is to place a cloth over the radiator cap before opening, so that in case any water gushing out can be 'contained'.

When I was younger I witness the hot water gushing out when my Dad was opening the radiator cap, ever since I'm very careful if I were to open the cap.

ah yes...forgo to add in..sometimes if i kw sure will overflow, will use a wet cloth...trick is slowly release the cap a bit and let the pressure out...after which quite safe to open liao

wah...most likely something heavy landed on the side of ur car...maybe one chap bang into ur car and chao..

U may need to go for some bang bang to hit the fenders back...but for left with a few months...think best is live with it

shd try touching the radiator top piping....that one shd be quite accurate in telling iszit hot

    ==========================

Tried touching the top part of the radiator & it didn't feel too hot but I guess I was overconfident. lipsrsealed.gif

hm...guess i'll leave the vehicle for 2 hrs b4 i do the coolent operation...haha..if not later i got roasted hands

    ==========================

Be careful as even 2 hrs is not enough sometimes.

Like the others say, check & feel top of rad & top hose, Then use cloth to open rad cap, just in case.

I've done it so many times, so I was overconfident lah.

You r right. Using the cloth as a precaution is the best. But strangely, when the hot water sprayed on my hand, it never seemed to burn or blister???

It happened to me several times already but it never blisters. Just turns red for a day or too then it's back to normal.Even though it steaming hot. Very strange? confused.gif

I think most probably some large vehicle like a truck hit your car.

I always think goods vehicles sud have a section designated for them to park, away from other cars.

They r not too careful when parking as hitting another vehicle won't make much difference to them & also most of those trucks r not driven by the owners, so they don't care too much.

Since your car is already old & going to scrap soon, just leave it be. It dosen't affect the handling & safety of your car in any way.

maybe u shd have waited much longer
  • 17 October 2005 - 11:39 PM
    Mivec9
with a bit of skill, no need to wait at all...my previous mech simply used a cloth and release a little of the cap to release pressure..after that...the pressurised coolant overspill till stop...then it's safe to remove cap liao
  • 17 October 2005 - 11:39 PM
    Mivec9
same here...kana once...also red for 1 day or so, then without blister ...

Best is to do it in the morning when engine is totally cold as mentioned earlier. thumbsup.gif

Otherwise u prob get coolant all over the engine bay. unsure.gif

Remember u have to wash all that stuff away as its not good for the paint & who knows what. sweatdrop.gif

thumbsup.gif to ur old workhorse bro. 2 bad we r here in SG, else u can do wat the pple r doin in other countries. They select v.old cars, dip out the old engine, put in a performance engine & mod it to match those current performance vehicles. Some may even b faster than new sports cars. I recon the guy in his latest performance car will b surprised when he's overtaken by 'antique' cars dizzy.gif U can flip thru imports/overseas magazines like Hot4s, Imports tuner etc to see wat pple r doing to old cars wink.gif

haha but worth it to get COE car meh?? itz like everything pay double..

road tax 150%, den high maintainence, den old cars FC not so gd and lotsa problem will arise out of no where
  • 27 October 2005 - 09:11 PM
    Mivec9
i mean it is cheaper in terms upfront...lower cost price. road tax, get up to 1.3litre...hence won't have to pay hefty road tax, maintenance wise - need to find good workshop to replace faulty items with price, FC wise many bros driving the 1.3litre corolla can get around 12km/litre while mine can hit 14-16km/litre...

so far my repair cost around $1.5k...it depends where u repair and the worksmanship. Some even hit up to 3.6k for repair.

new cars think cheapest is 36k++...but is korean..not sure if take 10 yrs loan, it can last till then and repair cost is a ? mark.

  • 27 October 2005 - 10:24 PM
    Pisces69
Yup. Can see COE car prices dropping liow. The dealers cannot hold on to them for too much longer as the new car prices don't seem to b going up soon.

Every day they hold it, is 1 day less on the balance coe period. They bought hoping to make a killing but if they hold too long, it's them who will get killed.

Just b careful & do your sums first. Most dealers paid slightly more or just the scrap price for those cars & there is still a large profit of about $8K on each car slod. Add in the "extras" u have to pay & it's still bonous time when they sell one.

Hold back a while longer & if the new car prices don't shoot up, u sud b able to gat a good bargain if u r good at playing poker.

Then it's time to take revenge on those dealers. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Never visit a dealer when u r desprate or already made up your mind to get such & such a car. Go in with an open mind & b prepared to walk away without buying anything.

That way there is no pressure on u. Time is on your side as the dealers r already bleeding like a menstruating mongrel. lipsrsealed.gif

U cannot feel bad when buying a car. Remember, they r the enemy. Did u consider that u also waste your own time? And u had to spend money to go see the car whereas she was already there & her time wasted was much less than yours.

If she showed u a great car at a great price, and u bought it, then your time was not wasted.

when i first started out also used castrol 20w40 with filter, spark plugs for 38 bucks.

then change to CAS mineral oil, next cxxxxxe 15w40, then to castrol 15w40 -excellent oil...then to CAS synthetic (think is Unicorn brand)

now using a trax brand 15w40...

intend use Mobil 10w30 for next oil change.

Got best FC when using CAS oil...dunno why also.
