ALL consolidated SMRT/NEL/KTM simisai BREAKDOWNS here! part 10

    Jellandross

"Everything works, whether its water, electricity, gas, telephone, telexes, it just has to work. If it doesn't work, I want to know why, and if I am not satisfied, and I often was not, the chief goes, and I have to find another chief. Firing the chief is very simple"

1984 Rally speech - the late LKY

Well firing Kuek won't solve the problem.

Contingency plans will never work with the scale of the problem. Whole N-S and E-W all stations down.

Recalling bus drivers is not as easy as playing sim city. Normal buses are still in service.

So u need to recall the off duty drivers, give them OT pay, give them buses they are not being used to be bridging services.

In peak hour, GG. Can never get them in time to the stations even if u use up the entire bus fleet reserve.

Logically speaking, the only way is to prevent such large scale systemic failure from happening. If one line is down, at least the contingency plan will work better.

I think they shd bring back parallel services between bus and rail.

I remember sometime back it was the "in" thing to streamline and there was a deliberate action taken to eliminate parallel routes.

Right now, they need it bec the rail system cannot cope.

It happened the last time during the "cable tie" saga but shutdown only 1 day. This time is definitely more serious and 3-4 days shutdown will create havoc.

Seems there was no emergency lighting or ventilation in the cabin, in times like this ? Why ah ?

At least have backup power and ventilation fans for every carriage. Good to have fire extinguishers, this may come in handy during power outage.

3 persons to lifted the track, 2 persons to toslot in aplank, & apparently without much safety considerations.

I am not an expert in railway maintainence, butI think someproper Jacks & 2 men will be sufficient & safer.

I am divided about quantity vs quality approach. On one hand, I guess most Singaporeans do not want to do manual work, & I doubt any school actually teaches railwaytech & job. You can send people toGermany orJapan maybewhereschools actually train skilled rail workers, but chances are, these people will leave after a few years (job hop) which defeated any value.

You can have good engineers, good equipments (not that I see it in the picture. Does that yellow tool looks like design to handle the planks?), but if you have poor untrain workers, thenthere is only so much you can expect.

I have a crazy idea. How about instead of quantity, look for people in neigbouring countries, decently educated, & give them decent pay, with chance of promotion like everyone else&and send them for training. As long as they stay with SMRT, so something along this line, they can remain as Singapore & live a decent life here. I rather have 2 good skill workers with proper equipement than 5 manual unskilled workers.

hmm, didn't come across any talk from LTA/LTY of giving SMRT a fine.

In 2013, M1 was fined a record breaking $1.5m for service disruptions. No doubt it was a 71 hr system disruption.

In meting out the fine, IDA said "M1 did not fulfilled obligations to provide resilient mobile telephone services "

"M1 failed to provide good electrical installation practices ". The disruption was caused by water entering a piece of equipment.

Errrrr............I think u see wrongly leh. There is no way they use manpower to lift the track. See the blue thing in the background, that is one of the few jacks used to lift the track. Manpower is used only to properly shift the concrete plank in place and bolt it to the metal tracks.

Following that, they will use a vibrator machine to vibrate the gravels around the plank for it to seat properly. Then the foreman/engineer will use a laser/leveler to check if the rail lines are correctly seated.

FYI, I am not a railway engineer. But watched many many NGC n Discovery shows. [:p] So picked up some knowledge from there. [scholar]

Yep, they had been fine before. Think LTA build the system (bulk of d infra cost) and let the private companies run and maintained it. Believe LTA is aware tat d system is getting older by d days n problems here n there keep on surfacing. So if keep on fining, d private companies possibly run into deficit and shareholders don't get dividend. The best option is to de-privatized d rail system where d gahment got unlimited fund to bring d rail system to a world class standard. After all, it's a MASS transport system, so d gahment should be providing n running it. Let d private companies operate buses to compete with it. That's is competition.

I think the SMRT CEO's KPI is also measured by the number of breakdowns SMRT experiences. The more breakdowns, the higher his bonus. That's probably why this year his salary hit the roof, as there are so many breakdowns this year. With the latest breakdown causing 100% MRT down, I think they will give him another 100% bonus!

    [shakehead]

i think you have gotten it wrong

    more breakdowns mean less bonus

if there is no breakdown this year, his bonus would have been $5M

and should not be public listed also!

Precisely. Once it's privatized, everything will be about profit. Maintenance and reliability can go out of the window since maintenance is always cost and doesn't generate money.

The lack of maintenance during that bloody Saw period has come back to bite them HARD. Hope it will cost PAP some votes in the upcoming election.

Precisely. Once it's privatized, everything will be about profit. Maintenance and reliability can go out of the window since maintenance is always cost and doesn't generate money.

The lack of maintenance during that bloody Saw period has come back to bite them HARD. Hope it will cost PAP some votes in the upcoming election.

Ya...who made this decision huh...should ask him to helm SMRT now

Just wondering whether still have fare increases next year or not...

Fares increased so many times to justify their maintenance and the ceo's pay... and yet we still ganna trains faults and down...

Why can't the fare increase based on the nos. of times the trains' down?

Say, if no trains down for 1 year, fare increases 3 cents

If trains down 1 time in year, fare reduces 1 cent

If trains down 2 times, fares reduces 2 cents ...

    Possible?

    Not possible la.

Under your model, they will be paying us to take the trains in no time.

And there will also be no trains to take.

    Is this the rail life?
    Is this just fantasy
    Caught in a packed ride
    No escape from this MRT.
    Open your eyes
    Look up to the sky
    And flee

    I'm just a poor boy
    Don't bid for COE
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
    Raffles Place, Ang Mo Kio
Anyway the lights blow, doesn't really matter to me.

    Mama, just left the train
    Walking home to my bed
Roads are jammed, trains are dead.
    Mama, ride had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown my EZ-link away
    Mama oooooooh
Didn't mean to make Lui cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
    Carry on, carry on
    as if nothing really matters...

i think you have gotten it wrong

    more breakdowns mean less bonus

if there is no breakdown this year, his bonus would have been $5M

If measured by breakdowns, bet with my last dollar, every years he will not get bonus. Should include d chief of LTA & LTY too. Then they really got to bulk up. Otherwise, hear d same story, "sorry for d commuters"
