Singapore public transport operators who have always claimed that their services are of world class standards should be grateful for the fact that no true competition exists between public transport operators in the city state.
Thus, as a measure and precaution to increase the standards provided, it is recommended that fares increments are to be frozen until real improvements are realised. Such a measure is in place to avoid distressing the commuters.

You, obviously, compare our MRT system with the worst in the world. You, most definitely, have class. And it's all LOW. A smarter person would compare with the BETTER, not the WORSE.
HUAT AH!!!!
HUAT AH for the MRT builder.
The MRT builder is thinking of this " The more sardine the better so that there will be more damage and over load for the MRT. Then the Sinkies Garmen LL have to buy spare part and repair the train.
It seem like this is no longer applicable for the buses right? How about the train? any loading limit??
You may be aware that our trains have minimium casualties accidents with the maximium speed seldom reached due to distances between stations, overweight trains, cable ties... Do feel free to compare on fairer basis.Singaporeans that complain about being packed like sardines every morning should be grateful that our MRT system is maintained at high standards.

So sorry, To my knowledge, the trains breakdowns are due mainly to design flaws and purchase management, nothing to do with maintenance . Example: trains totalled weight 320 tonnes purchased and allowed onto track designed for 220 tonnes trains, got nothing to do with maintenance. Latest: rail clip dislodged (could be due to vibrations from over-weight trains used)High standards at maintenance which resulted in frequent breakdowns and delays? Hmm. That's something new.
I used to be believe that our MRT is first class UNTIL the overcrowding and frequent breakdown began. That belief is now history. More so when I look at the way SG is being governed today. Guess, we will just have to continue aiming at each GE to hope for a renewal for the better.

Trains breakdowns when reached the limitBy the way, when i was young, I see on the buses that there is a limit on the number of passengers allowed on the bus like 1 driver, 40 seated passager and 30 standing passenger.

i also remember these figures painted on the buses.... but nowadays govt talks about free-market / market forces etc..... so if the passengers use force to get into a sardine-packed train, like a 38 busts fitting into a 32 bras, the aim to let market force decide things is achieved... Maybe a few traffic accidents of fully packing buess will then make the Garmen awake and penalise the bus operator for over loading.
Happen to see TP or LTA stopping a dump truck for overloading of sand, how come LTA/TP never stop buses for overloading?
2 different laws again?

Anticipate some/many traffic accidents with buses involved. Reason: 800 new buses needs more than 800 new drivers recruited and trained, learning curve may be too short . So learn through mistakes on the roads?Maybe a few traffic accidents of fully packing buess will then make the Garmen awake and penalise the bus operator for over loading.

SINGAPORE: MRT commuters along the North-South Line were experiencing delays as at 7.30pm Monday.
SMRT told Channel NewsAsia that the delay was believed to be due to a track fault.
The affected stations were Somerset and Orchard.

SINGAPORE: MRT commuters along the North-South Line were experiencing delays as at 7.30pm Monday.
SMRT told Channel NewsAsia that the delay was believed to be due to a track fault.
The affected stations were Somerset and Orchard.
SMRT said commuters along the stretch of line would experience delays of about 10 minutes.
That's because trains have to travel slower across the affected stretch, as a safety precaution.
One commuter told Channel NewsAsia he managed to get on a train from Orchard after a 45-minute wait. He said it took around 20 minutes for staff to announce the train service delay.
SMRT tweeted at 7:40pm that its staff were working to recover service. It added SMRT engineers will rectify the fault after passenger service hours.
In a later update, SMRT said the track fault is believed to be caused by a rail crack. It said trains are safe for service but travelling at slower speed as a safety precaution.
Only the northbound stretch from Somerset and Orchard stations are affected.
SMRT said there's an estimated additional 10 minutes of travel time from Marina Bay station towards Ang Mo Kio.
In a separate incident, commuters were de-trained at the Newton Station at about 6pm Monday.
SMRT said the faulty train was taken out of service. This resulted in longer travelling time for commuters during the peak hour.
It added the issue was resolved at about 6.30pm.

my recent trip to Tokyo with GF during April has impressed me with the Japanese train system and how they cope with delays and rush hour, and the well manners of the Japanese.
1. took their version of circle line to Disney line at 8am (Rush hour)
2. reach the platform everyone Q up in an orderly manner
3. there are "pusher" at each "Gate" bowing and reminding everyone to give way to alighting passengers and do not rush into the train every time a train arrives
4. Yes, they push ppl in to maximize the space but of course you can wait for the next one if you do not wish to be push in
5. My GF and I decided to wait for the next one..... and it takes half a min for the next train to arrive... totally shocked!
6. decided to wait for the next one again... this time slower but within a min.... so it is not a one off incident.
7. took the ride towards Disneyland.... in the train it is pack but everyone is reading their books or playing their phone without any sound.... NO Talking on hp in trains.. it is damm rude to talk on the HP in trains... the ones who talked are normally PRCs.
8. whenever there is a delay in any of the LINES even those not manned by JR company will be broadcast on the small TV in each of the cabins in the train. in this way ppl switching to another line will take note and make plans.
9. Besides they will state what cause the delay and the current status and expected delayed time.

I do think finding the root cause is a responsible and reasonable approach to this issue. We should propose to crawl back all the bonus given to the Former SMRT chief executive Saw Phaik Huat. Her cost saving measure are the main cause of all these problems . For the past ten years she had not bothered to pay for the proper maintance and now it is just fighting fire for the new CEO.

Announcing the sum on Friday, the LTA said its expenses on legal fees and consultation fees for its panel of experts came up to S$4 million while SMRT incurred the rest.
?The COI process was important to LTA. Credible experts and good lawyers were hired to ensure an optimal outcome. As a result of the process, we have greater clarity about what happened during the December incidents. Measures have been taken to improve reliability and strengthen the regulatory framework,? said an LTA spokesman, as quoted in The Straits Times.
Over the course of six weeks in April and May, a total of 116 witnesses, including ground staff, experts and former SMRT chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa were called up.
Andrew Yeo from Allen & Gledhill represented LTA while Senior Counsel Cavinder Bull represented SMRT.
The government called for the inquiry after two major MRT train breakdowns on 15 Dec and 17 Dec affected more than 200,000 commuters.
The COI found the breakdowns preventable and that SMRT was plagued by outdated equipment and poor maintenance for years.
Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew also said the LTA had to accept its share of the blame for not keeping SMRT in check.
SMRT was fined the maximum of $2 million for the breakdowns.

BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 23, 2014--Singapore Rail Engineering Pte. Ltd. (SRE) and Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) have decided to setup a joint venture to market and supply propulsion systems using Toshiba's Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) technology. The joint venture agreement was signed today at InnoTrans, the international transport technology trade fair taking place in Berlin this week. The new company will be called Railise Ptd. Ltd.
Tests have confirmed that Toshiba's PMSM technology will cut the power consumption of SMRT's first generation trains by 30%. The technology is also maintenance friendly, and Toshiba is targeting noise level reductions of up to 12 dB.
Mr. Toshio Masaki, Senior Executive Vice President, Toshiba Corporation, noted, "This move sets the stage for working with SMRT and SRE to take our PMSM system into the global market. PMSM is a significant advance in train drive systems that cuts energy consumption and noise while minimizing maintenance downtime. Today's agreement will allow us to work closely together to develop new markets for earth-friendly transportation."
Incorporated in June 2014 as a wholly owned subsidiary of SMRT Corporation Ltd (S53.SG), SRE offers a full suite of products, solutions and services that aim to help mass transit operators run their network better. SRE operates under the founding principle that it will only market products and solutions that are validated and used by Singapore's leading operator SMRT.
Mr. Mario Favaits, Managing Director of SRE, said, "We are excited that SMRT is relying on Railise to re-traction its first and second generation trains using PMSM technology. Through these projects, Railise will acquire unique systems integration skills allowing Singapore to develop an indigenous rail engineering capability. The first train is expected to hit the commercial tracks in Q2 2015 and from Q4 2015 onwards we will be looking at securing field trials abroad."
Mr. Desmond Kuek, President and Group CEO, SMRT Corporation, said, "As Asian countries enlarge their rail networks to meet the urgent transportation needs of their rapidly growing urban populations, we see significant potential across the entire rail engineering value chain. Setting up SRE as an independent company positions SMRT favourably, both in terms of leading the growth of Singapore's indigenous rail engineering capability to meet the needs of an expanding domestic rail network, and in seizing global market opportunities. Our partnership with Toshiba is an important step in this direction, and we are pleased to be able to work jointly to promote the PMSM system to operators."
All this down time is to prepare for a better future.

One of Singapore's largest transport groups is examining an 800m takeover bid for Addison Lee, London's biggest minicab operator.
Sky News has learnt that SMRT Corporation, which is listed on the Asian city state's stock exchange, is at the early stages of considering an offer.
Addison Lee's owner, the private equity group Carlyle, has kicked off an auction of the company for which it paid 300m just 18 months ago.
Credit Suisse, the investment bank handling the sale, has asked bidders to lodge initial proposals next week.
SMRT, which runs bus, train and taxi services in Singapore, is expected to be joined in the bidding by up to half a dozen buyout firms, including BC Partners, Charterhouse and CVC Capital Partners.
Addison Lee, which was founded by former cab driver John Griffin with a single car in 1975, now handles 10m passenger journeys annually, with more than 4,000 drivers on its books.
Its rapid ascent has not been without controversy, however.
The company's boss enraged rivals when he suggested that its drivers should use bus lanes, and accused cyclists of causing many of the road accidents in London which have prompted concern among safety groups.
Addison Lee has dismissed suggestions that the emergence of new economy companies such as Uber will diminish its growth prospects, arguing that the two companies serve separate customer bases.
If SMRT does proceed with an offer, it would represent the second offer from a Singaporean entity for a Carlyle-owned motoring business in as many months.
In September, the private equity group sold a 50% stake in the RAC, Britain's second-largest roadside recovery group, in a transaction valuing the company at more than 2bn.
Bidders for Addison Lee are likely to be attracted to the prospect of international expansion, although one private equity firm suggested there was some anxiety about the encroachment of so many technology-based start-ups.
News of SMRT's interest in Addison Lee comes just a month after it announced a joint venture agreement with Hailo, the London-based taxi mobile application developer.
Carlyle declined to comment.

Bros, did the train breakdown again? Bus stops are full of people!
Was told: SMRTC = Singapore Mentally Retarded Training Centre. So we should be alarmed/panic by anysuch observations. The name can be changed, but the culture being preserved lovingly.

They said they can't do more;
LTY believed and gave them tons of $$$ to buy buses and pay wages ....

Don't think they will have it so good operating over there.

Cheers, cheers, cheers . . . that's what I hear the stock holders.

In March, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew announced that BSEP would be enhanced.

The Government, he said, would fund 1,000 new buses instead of the original 550. All 1,000 buses will be on the road by 2017.

The cost of the programme is expected to double from the original $1.1 billion.

Besides purchasing the buses,

the programme pays for operating costs, such as driver salary, for 10 years. - See more at: http://news.asiaone....h.71Cz1R6c.dpuf
Singaporeans that complain about being packed like sardines every morning should be grateful that our MRT system is maintained at high standards.
Delays and frequent break downs are safety measures, designed into our MRT to avoid overstressing the trains.
Sincerely

A pregnant woman got into a heated argument with another female commuter on board an MRT travelling from Yio Chu Kang toward Ang Mo Kio two days ago (22 Sep).
According to Shin Min Daily News, the pregnant woman was seated in front of the other commuter who was standing in a crowded carriage.
The feet of pregnant woman then brushed against the feet of the other commuter.
In response, the standing commuter asked the pregnant woman to move her feet away.
Instead of moving her feet away however, the pregnant woman proceeded to take a picture of the position of her feet along with the legs of the other commuter.
The standing commuter was extremely unhappy that she was photographed and the two women started shouting at one another.

All cramped up in a small confined space, air stale, and a little thing will just ignite the unpleasant feelings in body.....
If we can put down our ego, and apologize sincerely with a word "sorry", the outcome would have been totally different..
A little bit of graciousness would make both parties happy, and even the BB in the womb would have been happy giggling in his sleep :)

Crowding negatively affects the behaviour of insects and animals. Aggression increases and rates of conflict rise.

I feel the saddest part of the whole situation is that no one who has the necessary influence to change things is aware and/or is bothered about these negative effects.

MRT = Mental Retardation Transport. I believe: Especially during peak hours/underground intervals, there will be marginally less oxygen for each breath of air the passengers breath in, when seated. Hence many of them are asleep due to lack of oxygen if they are that sensitive to it. Chronic mental retardation may set in unannounced, since there is no article/research of such. My wish for everyone is, that there be more Bus Lanes. We can opt to cycle along Bus Lanes instead of taking MRT. Its quite warm this morning. So i did a 40Km trial from 6.10am, along some roads. Not too bad, a little sweating for skin-detox but not tiring when i arrived at workplace.
