In my memory, Taipei MRT started planning/building before Singapore but was plagued with a lot of corruption and delays and was delivered much later than Singapore MRT. At least that was how the Singapore media reported back in the 1980's during the first MRT opening .. IIRC, Yio Chu Kang to Raffles Place or something like that. [laugh]

Expect faster rides soon on North-South Line
    Monday, April 27, 2015 - 10:43
    Adrian Lim
    The Straits Times

Commuters will have faster rides on the North-South Line when rail works are completed by the end of this month.

By then, all 96,000 timber sleepers - used to hold tracks in place - will be replaced with concrete ones, and speed restrictions which have been imposed for safety reasons will be lifted.

Trains will run at 80kmh, instead of between 40kmh and 60kmh at some stretches of track, cutting travel times by around 10 to 15 per cent.

A trip between Jurong East and Marina Bay, for example, will take about 67 minutes instead of 77 minutes.

Since 2012, rail operator SMRT has been installing concrete sleepers, which last twice as long as the wooden ones.

Mr Chua Chong Kheng, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) deputy chief executive for infrastructure and development, said that with the works on the line coming to an end, the speed of the trains will be returning to normal.

The LTA and SMRT said on Saturday that sleeper replacement works for the East-West Line will start from the middle of next month.

This will involve changing more than 92,000 sleepers between Boon Lay and Tiong Bahru stations, as well as between Lavender and Pasir Ris.

Temporary speed restrictions have already been imposed along certain track sections, slowing travel times by about 10 minutes.

Train services at certain stations may also end earlier to facilitate the works, which are expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Both the North-South and East-West lines received an additional 13 new trains last year.

With higher operating standards in place, the number of weekly train trips on the network has increased by 10 per cent.

During peak periods, average waiting times have come down by 12 seconds, to 2 minutes 18 seconds.

The off-peak wait has been reduced to between four and five minutes, compared with five and seven minutes previously.

    Monday, April 27, 2015 - 13:19
    AsiaOne

SINGAPORE -Commuters can enjoy free travel on board buses and train services on National Day.

The free travel offered on Singapore's 50th birthday is to encourage people to attend National Day celebrations island-wide, said the two public transport operators (PTO) in a media release on Monday.

Free travel will take effect on Aug 9 from the start of service to the end of operation.

SBS Transit and SMRT trunk and feeder bus services, SMRT's Night Rider and all SBS Transit's non basic services such as Parks, Chinatown Direct and Night Owl bus services will also be part of this free travel.

Fare gates leading to train services run by SMRT and SBS Transit will be opened on National Day to allow people to board trains on multiple train lines for free.

Mr Desmond Kuek, President and Group Chief Executive Officer, SMRT Corporation said: "We hope that this will add to the celebratory atmosphere and encourage everyone to get out of the house to celebrate as one united people. "

The gap nothing to do with lowest quotation win policy leh. Even if the quality is finished with diamond, with the same gap the person leg will still fall into to gap.

The thing is it is very amazing that the gap between the train and the platform is quite small and yet people leg still can get stuck in the gap. Looks like they need to reduce the gap by further few cm.

I just notice the gap between platform and train in NE line, circle line and North south line. It seems like NE line the gap is the widest. The gap is like the width of a 5 inch smartphone. Whereas north south line the gap is only half of that. Think that could be the reason why there is some cases of leg got stuck in between the gap in NE line. Due the gap is abit too wide. Maybe Lta should consider to set certain guideline on the max gap allowed so to further reduce such mishap to happen. Wanted to take picture of the gap but in train too many people not able to take as once door open so many people go out train
Next time got chance will take pic and compare. Hmm..

This is the typical lift door gap. The gap between the platform and the train in NE line is like all the width of end silver plate to another end silver plate plus another 5 cm more. So it seems the gap is abit too big already.

Maybe, but I just so happen to be in the train and think of this incident so I decided to take a good look at different line. I.e ns line, circle line and NE line as I am also on the way using all these line and that's what I notice the gap difference. Hopefully when the new downtown line and other mrt line the gap issue can be solved by setting max limit gap allowed which I feel the NE line one is abit on too big gap side.

While watchingMediacorpse 5 news yesterday on this issue, they were talking about how the victim might have fallen into the gapdue to pushing by the crowd, how helpful people were in assisting the victim & even talk to Professor about how people tend to look at their phone while walking. Butthey didn't mention 1 other point???

this morning Today newspaper mentioned the NE & Circle line will install gap filler to minimise the instances of people legs being caught in the gap.

So North-South & East-West no need to have gap filler? B'cos gap is too small for people legs to get caught?

the gap is not big but small feet can still get caught, so just be careful and watch where you step.

it is to think of how to narrow the gap or what, if that is the case, the escalator has more problems to look at.

Recently have been taking the evening train at jurong east station to bt batok. Couldn't believe that the train and platformare super super jam packed, even though they have opened two platform for train going towards the woodlands direction!!! Thinking the purpose of having two platform is to ease the crowd or to worsen the crowded situation?

Noticed that the train towards woodlandscan stop at the station untilso long thatyou can see at least 3 trains arrived at the station from the city direction! Wonder did SMRT aware of such jam packed situation during that period?Lol. Looks like the train service from JE towards woodlands did not improve much at all during the peak hours!

SINGAPORE: A service disruption hit both theNorth-South and East-West MRT lines on Tuesday evening (Jul 7).

At about 7.15pm, SMRT said on Twitter: "Due to traction power fault, please expect additional 20 minutes travelling time betwee CLE (Clementi) and JKN (Joo Koon) and between MRB (Marina Bay) and Yis (Yishun) both bounds."

Some commuters on board SMRT trains on the North-South and East-West lines reported that trains they were on had stalled and that the power went out.

Twitter user said the lights and air-conditioning went out for about five minutes. The train was stalled near Commonwealth.

Another Twitter user Deepak Bhaskari said she was stuck on the train between Bukit Batok and Bukit Gombak for nearly 15 minutes.

seriously, our mrt are just not reliable anymore! breaking down so frequently like period gone haywire.

will it see daylight again, with so many add-ons implemented, it's anybody guess.

as commuters, we hv to be bus-savy cos least bus don't break down on regular basis.

Ever since the major train breakdown few yrs back. The root of the causes I believe still not solved yet. They maybe heading at the wrong direction and thought they already found what is the problem and put measures in place like change the wooden slap to concrete slap. Is it really the wooden slap that cause the major breakdown? If yes, why breakdown still happen so frequent and worst, those part where the wooden slap had been replaced by concrete slap is not spared from breakdown. Today breakdown already shows that the changing from wooden slap to concrete one do not solve the problem at all.

They really need to relook back the drawing board and look deep into other areas. 1st start with the weight of the train from the 1st batch of train in 1986 all the way to the newest batch and see whether is there any pattern that they can find from there. Perhaps it is just as simple as train weight had been increasing from the old one to the newer one. Maybe that is the cause?

I think Desmond has outdone Saw this time...

    http://www.channelne...er/1966928.html

    Where got outdone?
I think Desmond is definitely doing better than saw
Gut feel wise, number of breakdown reduced
I just hope they continue to build a credible division of engineers
Reward based can work can solve problem
