ALL consolidated SMRT/NEL/KTM simisai BREAKDOWNS here! part 5

  • 11 March 2015 - 09:46 AM
    Wt_know

there was a suggestion from so called "expert" that in order to fix the "root cause" perhaps smrt need more maintenance hours from now till the roout cause is fixed

can suggest, mon/tue/wed night ... 3 nights train service end at 11.30pm (last station)

because fixing the track it need more time

but again ... why korea/japan even taiwan can manage their track with train service end late

i watch a documentary about taiwan rail service ... their maintenance regime is upmost critical especially for high speed railway ... it has to be flawless ... check-again-and-again every night ... because 1 simple mistake will be catastrophe

At least for once SMRT can say not their fault.... its the mobile phone fault.... [rolleyes]

In any case, think the problem starts when "Empress" Saw took over... her top KPI is earning $$$$ and let the book look good, not some crucial maintenance which cost $$$$....

Looking at it, the only way is to shut down the whole system for major overhaul...... in the meantime, stop all ERP, half price for all bus fare till the MRT is fully restored....... but no CEO/Gov got the balls to make this call..... [rolleyes]............

what i dont understand is why doesnt SG follow wat HK MTR n japan JR lines do, which is to let this private infrastructure coys also own the land ard the stations. That way the property profits can be used to cover the expensive train costs...

I spoke w an ex civil servant before on this n d reason he gave was garmen refuse to let train coys also own land... in other words they wanna separate coys like capitaland, keppel etc from smrt...

really i feel they have to consider HK & Japan's model seriously... if not better harakiri as some say...

if d existing cabinet are too old n fuddy duddy to consider out of box ideas, then better step down IMO

you all v bad. LTY is right lah. SMRT IS RELIABLE leh! [dead]

    MORE RELIABLE IN BREAKDOWNS!!! :D:D

MRT reliability has improved as breakdowns happening daily instead of unpredictably

    Posted on 12 March 2015

Commuters glad they can look forward to a daily breakdown instead of not knowing when the next one might happen.

    mrt-east-west.jpg

Singaporeans from all walks of life who like to take public transport because cars are for rich people said they are happy that MRT reliability has improved.

This after MRT trains in Singapore have been breaking down regularly on a daily basis and Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said on March 11, 2015, thatreliability is going upas a result.

One Singaporean, Didi Pai, said having daily breakdowns will prepare commuters mentally so they know they can count on the train to predictably malfunction: Yes, I agree with Minister Lui as I can definitely feel MRT reliability improving. I can now expect the MRT system to break down every day instead of second-guessing when it will happen next.

However, more has to be done to ensure that the breakdown happens regularly enough because there are still some rare days where the MRT system goes on without a hitch and everything works fine.

    Thats not ideal.

    wikiproperty.co-ad.gif

    Ad byWikiproperty.co(Singapore)

MRT operators, SMRT and SBS Transit, have also said they will look into commuters feedback to ensure breakdowns are more regular to continue to improve reliability in the occurrence of disruptions that lead to multi-station malfunctions.

One SMRT spokesperson, Gong Jiao Wei, said: At the present moment, it is hard for us to schedule breakdowns on a timely basis, such as ensuring that it happens every day without fail during a specific time, like during peak hour at 8am in the morning when everyone is rushing to work, for example.

But what we can do is to make sure breakdowns can occur within a certain period, for example, between 8am and 10am or between 7pm and 8pm, when it is most packed and more people can be inconvenienced at the same time, which would lead to more news coverage and social media chatter and have a broader impact on public consciousness.

If we can keep this up, reliability will definitely improve as Singaporeans will know ahead of time when to avoid taking the trains and make plans for other transport arrangements.

To make breakdowns happen in a more timely predictable fashion, some steps that SMRT and SBS Transit are expected to take include not taking appropriate measures to change train sleepers on schedule, putting off electrical wiing work to another date thinking it is not urgent and generally maintaining a lax system of checks and balances for crucial operating systems.

Both train operators have also said they are aware that while inaction on their part in terms of maintenance is crucial, improving the reliability of daily breakdowns will require working harder at non-transport competencies, such as the redirecting of vital limited resources to other money-making ventures like providing advertising space in train stations and coming up with more ways to increase rental returns from leased properties.

Signalling fault stalls North South Line train

SINGAPORE: An SMRT train travelling on the North-South Line towards Jurong East stalled at the Yishun platform on Thursday afternoon (Mar 12).

The rail operator said the disruption at 3.36pm was due to a signalling fault. There was a delay of about 15 minutes to trains moving in both directions to reroute trains to minimise impact to service, SMRT said.

SMRT said train services resumed to normal schedules after an hour. It also said station and train announcements were made to commuters. However a check of its social media accounts showed no updates, and some of those affected took to Twitter to complain.

I know you are trying to make fun of LTY sarcastically, but not many people can appreciate your humor, especially when you are mixing up what was being discussed...LOL

Singaporeans from all walks of life, who enjoy taking public transport because cars are for rich people, are requesting that the CEO in charge of Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) to join SMRT.

This after the MRT train system broke down twice in one day last week and the Bukit Panjang LRT system completely failed to move on March 9, 2015, causing commuters to walk on the tracks.

One Singaporean, Didi Pai, said: The CEO of ERP must be a very good leader because he cause ERP gantries to never break down before, forever working perfectly, beep beep beep, deducting money all year round, no problem.

He should teach SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek a few tricks on how to make the trains not break down.

Other Singaporeans said CEOs of other organisations should also consider having a short chat with the SMRT CEO to exchange ideas.

Ho Seh Wan, a local, said: I think the CEOs of GIRO and CPF should go and talk to the SMRT CEO.

GIRO and CPF damn satki one, whole year also work very well, very punctual, deduct money on the dot, never spoil or delay before one.

Looks like Hong Kong might have the same issues soon. Tell tail signs are there.

    - Rail company focused on property development

    - Protected by govt as they are govt owned

How Hong Kong's subway turns a $2 billion annual profit

The city's subway is the face of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTR) -- a publicly traded company that pulled in $5.2 billion in revenue last year.

    {C}
    {C}

With a $2 billion annual profit, the Hong Kong's subway is an anomaly among major rail networks. New York's subway, for example, suffers from chronic funding gaps and will spend nearly $2.5 billion in 2015 to service its debt.

How does Hong Kong's train and bus network manage to clear its mind-boggling margins?

First off, this is one impressive subway system. Even with more than 5 million daily commuters, MTR trains boast a 99.9% on-time arrival rate. Fares are notoriously cheap ($.50 to $3), but cover roughly 175% of the system's operating costs.

But the company's real profits are derived from a lesser-known side of the business: property development. Some 50 major properties across Hong Kong are owned, developed or managed by MTR, including two of the city's tallest skyscrapers.

"Sometimes critics say it's a property development firm doing a side business of rail," said Tim Hau, a professor at University of Hong Kong's School of Economics and Finance.

Here's how it works: MTR enjoys a special relationship with the Hong Kong government, which is also its majority shareholder. The government provides land -- at no cost -- for use by the train operator, and MTR is then allowed to develop the areas above and around its stations.

Related: Taking a ride on the world's most envied metro system

MTR often builds shopping malls right on top of stations -- it owns 13. Last year, rents at the malls went up by an average of 14%. Below ground, each subway stop is jam-packed with retail outlets, which all pay rent to MTR or have a profit-sharing agreement in place.

You can find every kind of retail in the stations -- even Michelin-starred dim sum restaurants.

Wong Sau Lan has been managing one such restaurant, called Tim Ho Wan, for the past two years. She said the restaurant's MTR outlet, located in a subway station that serves the central business district, is twice as popular as its flagship restaurant.

For the 14 hours that Tim Ho Wan is open each day, people will, on average, wait 40 minutes for the MTR dining experience.

MTR is now exporting its model abroad. It's already been commissioned to build and run lines in China, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Australia, and more projects are in the works.

"They'll go wherever there's a profit," said Hau. "There aren't that many viable competitors in the world."
