If LTY did plan for the expansion of the rail network surely he will include in his plan to buy more new trains.

Cos they got free help in maintaining d system from LTA despite collecting d handsome profits mah.
Just thinking even LTA take over MRT, will there be any difference and will the MRT system lesser breakdown and more reliable than currently?

I believe the current system cannot tahan until 2023, cause the MRT system is beyond hopeless already! Just now around 9pm plus wasat NS line, train interval was 5-6 mins, and the train was super super crowded and i can only get onto the 2nd train after waited for another3 mins! Total time spent waiting for train was about8 mins! Such a good "efficient" MRT system we have here!

it all a conspiracy , now 8mins is acceptable standards to you.

in a few years time, train break down and waiting 15mins to board the trains would become the benchmark

Think SMRT said before, the current train system by default cannothandle the short frequency of the train, the shortest frequency that they can go is 100sec only. And i have doubts when they shorten the frequency to 100 sec next year, will the system really can handlethe 100 sec frequency on the actual run?!

The preliminary design was supposed to be for that speed.
I doubt upgrading the tracks and lighter cabins would help with faults relating to power.
In the preliminary design, the power supply is overhead which is easy for fault finding compared to the aesthetically pleasing 3rd rail.

New DTL2 a step towards a 'car-lite' city: PM Lee
By Kenneth Lim
POSTED: 26 December 2015 at 11:59 AM
UPDATED: 26 December 2015 at 11:06 PM
SINGAPORE: The new Downtown Line 2 (DTL2) is a step towards Singapore becoming a "car-lite" city, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said at the opening ceremony of the line on Saturday (Dec 26), held at the Botanic Gardens station.
"The LTA's tagline for their public comms campaign for DTL 2 is 'Give your car a break', and we hope you will give your car a break too. Hopefully the morning jams on Bukit Timah Road can become a thing of the past," said Mr Lee.
"Ultimately, we aim to make Singapore a safe, green, car-lite city where all Singaporeans can get around the island conveniently, and connect with their friends and families seamlessly," Mr Lee said. "The DTL2 opening today, is a step in towards becoming that city."
The Downtown Line opens to the public on Sunday. There are 12 stations on the line, from Bukit Panjang to Rochor, and travel time from Bukit Panjang to Bugis is expected to take 20 minutes less compared to previous methods.
In his opening address, Mr Lee said the direct connection to town was something Bukit Panjang and Bukit Timah residents have "long been looking forward to."
A Bukit Panjang resident echoed Mr Lee's comments.
"Usually I go to school in the morning, and it's the peak hour, so the bus is super crowded with people, and we have to like squeeze in, no place to sit and we have to stand all the way to school,"said Ms Anna Lum. "I think with the help of Downtown Line we can get a seat, we'll reach school quite early."
MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Liang Eng Hwa said the DTL will be a "game changer" for his residents.
"For many years we've always had transport problems, whether it's public transport or road transport. I think with the opening of the Downtown Line it will improve connectivity in a big way, and I hope we'll see a big change in the travel patterns for residents," he said.
Train rides on both the DTL 1 and 2 are free from Dec 27 to Jan 1 - but only if commuters start and end their journey at a Downtown Line station.
DTL2 COULD FACE "TEETHING ISSUES"
During the free service period, the Ministry of Transport will deploy extra staff to help with any overcrowding, wrote Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan in a blogpost on Saturday.
"Our immediate priority is for a good start. My worry is that there may be severe overcrowding. It is a Sunday, during a holiday season, there is novelty value, and travelling is free. If too many rush in to be among the first wave of commuters, there will be overcrowding and long waiting time," wrote Mr Khaw.
"We will deploy extra staff to man the stations and many goodwill ambassadors to guide the commuters," he added. "We will do our best to ensure a pleasant service for all."
To help mitigate any overcrowding, Mr Khaw said his Ministry will inform commuters of the level of crowdedness at the DTL stations. "So do check via MyTransport.SG app and better time your trip accordingly," he said.
The Transport Minister also requested that commuters do not all rush down to check out the new stations on Sunday.
"Please spread out, and there is no need to rush," he said. "DTL is here to stay, and there will be plenty of opportunities to experience its wonders, including the artwork in each station."
"I will be there tomorrow to observe; I hope it will be a good experience for all," he added.
In another blog post on Dec 21, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan warned that teething issues, such as train disruptions could be expected during the first few months of operation, despite despite thousands of tests being done on the system.
This includes a very large number of tests on the integration between DTL1 and DTL2, he said.
Mr Khaw wrote that engineers said a typical bedding-in period of several months is needed before the system stabilises. He added that engineers have spent many months preparing and testing the entire system, from the operations control centre to the trains and tunnels.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARE DOWN FROM DEC 27
Public transport fares will also be reduced by 1.9 per cent from Sunday. Adult card fares will be lowered by 1 to 4 Singapore cents, depending on travel distance. Student and senior citizen concessionary card fares will go down by 1 to 2 Singapore cents.
Prices of all monthly concession passes, monthly travel passes, cash fares and single trip ticket fares will remain unchanged.

Getting a seat on mrt is quite difficult nowadays. Even some buses also cant get a seat. I guess they are now making it convenient for people to take mrt, as for comfortable i think still far from it. As taking public transport now confirmed is not comfortable.

Signalling fault causes delays on DTL2

Zhaki Abdullah | The Straits Times | Wednesday, Dec 30, 2015

Commuters using the Downtown Line 2 (DTL2) to get to work yesterday morning found that there were delays on the new line.

Mr Zhi Cong, 23, said the train he boarded at Bukit Panjang did not move out of the station for about eight minutes.

"After the train reached Sixth Avenue, it was stuck again for another eight minutes," said Mr Zhi.

Lawyer Lyv Meah, 37, said the platform doors failed to open at Rochor station, causing a delay.

She added that the train she was on moved "slowly and jerkily" towards Bugis after the problem with the doors was rectified.

SBS Transit's senior vice-president for corporate communications Tammy Tan said that slow service on the line was caused by a signalling fault at Rochor station at 9.10am yesterday. "The fault was rectified soon after and trains could resume their regular speed at about 9.18am," she added.

The DTL2 was officially opened on Sunday, covering a distance of 16.6km from Bukit Panjang to Chinatown. In a blog post made on Dec 21 before its opening,

Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said that commuters could expect "teething issues".

He added in his post that engineers from the Land Transport Authority and SBS Transit had told him that there would be a 'bedding-in' period of several months for the DTL2 before it stabilises.

1) Last time vs now. I think take bus got more chance to get seated down. Plus chances of bus breaking down is slim.

JE and DTL is quite far apart, not connecting.
The crowds at JE interchange usually come from bt batok, cck and bt panjang residents. So thinking if the opening of the DTL, will it be lesser people going to JE change train since now they can opt to take DTL to city?!
