SMRT staff are doing their best to assist affected passengers and more are working behind the scenes to bring the system back up again. Other transport workers are stepping up to bring people home as soon as they can. Thank you for working with a positive attitude.
On social media we see many expressions of disappointment and a few refreshing posts with light-heartedness to bring cheers to affected passengers. There are also car owners who have posted offers of help to pick up those who needs a ride.
It's late, and i know it's not easy, but let's pull together.

How is the train going to support 6.9 million people?

SMRT is very lucky that the 3.5hr breakdown did not happen during the morning peak hours. It would have a big negative impact on productivity at the national level.

"Preliminary investigations found a faulty train which could have caused the power to trip; arcing was observed on the underside of this train. The power surge caused the protective relays across the entire North South East West Lines network to be activated, leading to a shut-down of power across the two lines. We will continue to comb through the system through the night to see if there could be other faulty trains or other causes."

Trains overworked due to higher demand... all points back to the increase in population without the corresponding increase in infrastructure.

The system is too far screwed to be redeemed, IMHO, no matter what is done. Unless there is a massive investment of infrastructure, and a long period of shutdown of the system to phase in the new infrastructure.

The long period of running without proper maintenance has taken its toll and now the whole thing is to be messed up to have any hope of piecemeal efforts having any significant effect.

I pity those engineers, technicians in SMRT have to cope with this.

The newest batch of train which will be in service in year 2016 is even heavier then the current new one may cause even more problem. Don't know why smrt order train that the weight keep increase. Couldn't they order train that would at least maintain the weight? Like the newest batch is a lot heavier then the older one by 1/4 when full load. That could put a lot more stress to the track.

Imagine they detect power fault due to faulty train. Is it really 100% because of fault train? Could it be the weight of the train combine with too many people in the train that cause the train to sag down to the level that may be dangerously low and touch the power line that causes power surge and trip the whole ns Ew line?

Hi, thanks for sharing, didnt know the extend of the issue until after reading the comments

Pity the folks who were denied of a secure public transport system

Been hearing sorry too many times, can't they just fixed this issues even if it means doing partial closure of tracks/stations to invest in thr maintenance or change of system?

I think the issues are serious enough and too frequent, people can understand the temp. Inconvenience of tracks/station closure for repairs if this temp. Inconvenience can solve the long standing issues once n for all.

first step is they should de-list smrt, then they can let go of the burden of delivering profits to the board n shareholders

Without this, they will always be trying to think of ways to solve the issues by not affecting top line

Not a bad thing but the problem has become serious enough that they should fix the issues at one go n p&l should not be the reason causing the repetitive breakdowns

Maybe for that amount they are paying the CEO.

They could have actually gotten someone with real professional expertise in train OPS.

Now they get someone who gives train OOPS!

should have just thrown him in some GRC, at least he will do less damage and cost less.

may not be all mechanical fault? could be the first power trip caused other power points to trip, i.e. a software in the power system brought the system down.

Most likely they have not found the problem... Electricity trip just reset the breakers... Very dangerous but less dangerous than pissing off the morning crowd of voters.

Don't worry. Many woke up early to take the bus like me.

electrical trip very troublesome one because have to find out where is the fault

fault finding needs the most sexperienced and intelligent and creative electricial engineer

oh wait, there are no more good engineers? why? they all went to study accountating, business, law?

should just ask the CEO: how long you need to fix everything so it'll be more reliable than 1 breakdown/mth?

then we give him the time by shutting down the damn thing for that period of time to fix it,

after which if still not more reliable than we should take more drastic actions (eg. harakiri).

these few days gonna be a real mud fest [laugh]

You think he knows where or what the problem lies? Better to stay silent dan to say something clownish and get mocked by all of us.

Let them investigate until song song first. The smrt spokesperson will eventually come out and say something.

Last evening as I was driving from AMK to Yishun, not the expressway, to pick up my stranded wife I can see trains stranded on tracks, mrt stations flooded with passengers, most likely in confusion. I told my wife to meet me at Northpoint shopping mall to have dinner, I think it was around 7.30pm when we had our dinner. Imagine our friends who have to break fast. Stranded dunno where, tired and hungry.

On our way back home taking the CTE. We saw on the other direction towards Woodlands and Yishun the expressway was filled with taxis. Looking at social media it's no wonder that so many ppl are angry.

    Give u another scenario.

imagine husband and wife are stuck on the train, need to rush back to the childcare to pick up the children because childcare closes at 7pm... what happens to the children if husband and wife had no backup / help to pick up the children?

the implication is more than just what LTA and SMRT thinks... its a chain effect...
