    Bro Adrianli,

saw your review on the new camera - it is awesome. But if comparing it to a DOD-F500D, which do you think is better? I currently own a F500D, wondering if should upgrade.

This Blackview car camera nite video is much better than the F500HD. If u frequently drive in the nite, can consider this Blackview or DOD-tec GSE580 which is my next car camera. Wait for my review on GSE580.

But overall in functionallity, the F500HD wins Blackview hands down. It has more adjustability than the Blackview and can be used as a personal camera too. biggrin.gif I still have my F500HD as a portable camera.

    Hi bro Adrian,

May I ask if they will compensate ur postage costs for sending ur defective camera back?

Nope, I will have to bear the postage for sending it there. They will bear the return postage cost when they send it back to u. It does not cost much, ard S$10 and below with tracking(registered) from Singpost.

    Hi Adrianli,

Thanks for your feedback, after reading, i had just placed an order for one too. I'll be fixing it on my mpv, some question maybe you can help me with:-

    * Can this camera be operated when the engine start/stop? ie. it will automatically starts recoding when engine starts and also stop when engine is switch off?

Yes, it turns on automatically when connected to the cig lighter plug.

    * i presume if i hook it with my car battery, i can remove the internal rechargeable battery? (i worry it could explode if expose to hot sun for too long)

I suppose u can remove it if u are good with electronics stuff. The lithium battery is built in. But warranty may be void if u open the camera.

Btw, i am also looking for in-car video recorder without the lcd screen as i will attached it to my car's MMI (image can be viewed from my dashboard screen).
i've ordered a korean-made one through my workshop but after 1 month it is still out of stock. Any idea where i could find such recorder?

There are many car camera w/o lcd screen out there. I can think of, DOD-tec GS300, GS600, DRS1100PRO(non-HD) and Blackvue(non-HD).

    Thanks in advanced.

    See my reply in red.

Depends on duration of file size u select. Every duration = different file.

Thatz taken with the DOD-tec F900LHD car camera.

Thanks again. Will camp here for your review on GSE580.

    Hi Adrian,

Thanks for the prompt replies. I forgot to mention in-order to hook the camera to my MMI, i need it to have a audio and video-out option. Most compact in-car camera doesn't come with this. if you do come across any of such, appreciate it if you can share.

Thinking of getting another in-car camera. But so far all those i have plugs in to the cigarette lighter plug. Looking for those where I can directly connect to the batt so that can leave it on. Since most cameras have motion sensor and can record when it detects movement. Plus the cameras I have now all taking up that cigarette lighter plug then sometimes I need to use more than 1 plug to charge hp or ipod.

Yes, quite a lot of HD car cameras come with motion sensor.

So far I found that the HD720P motion sensor is pretty good. But the thing abt having motion sensor, u have to connect it to the car batt and keep the camera turned on 24/7. So why not just record everything since it is already turned on. biggrin.gif Thatz what my thinking. So I keep one of my car camera turned on 24/7 with recording.

Simple, just get any car accessories shop to wire it directly to the car batt with a on/off switch.

    Yup.

In terms of video quality, Blackview is 720p HD while F500HD is Full 1080i HD. Daytime quality, F500HD wins hands down. Nite time quality, Blackview wins hands down. The F500HD nite time video is too noisy and gainy while Blackview is clear and sharp. F500HD is already an older technology compared to the latest Blackview car camera.

Curious... do ZMC and Blackview have their own outlets where they can do installation for you?

I'm thinking of getting front/back cameras with blackbox function installed either this weekend or next so curious if I can drive in and let the in-house techs install or do I purchase and bring to a workshop. Going to change timing belt so might as well get wiring done.

Can advertisers PM me a quote/pricelist as well for such services? thanks!

Have you tried wiring to other batts instead of the car's battery? Cuz i am thinking of wiring to a battery pack instead to charge the camera so that I won't drain the car's battery accidentally. Thought of this as I have many Nimh and Nicd batts leftover cuz in the past rc plane always use these but now change to lipos and no use for these batts.

for conti car, better tap wire direct to the batt instead of front passenger fuels box cos the ECU will detect and follow the factory setting to output power when car is parking. Error is common.

Are you sure ur installer tap the power directly from the car battery or from the fuse box???

If u want to experiment, just make a pair of croc clips and pop open ur boot, connect the croc clips to the car battery n ur car camera. Then start ur engine. there shouldnt be any voltage error at all. Because ur car alarm is also tapped directly from the car battery also and it needs to be turned on 24/7 also. But asking the installer to find that car alarm wire is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. So ask ur installer to make a new wiring to tap directly from the car battery, add a fuse n switch. It should work fine.

I have not tried Nimh or Nicd batts but I did tried on lipo batts that I have. It will work fine but to unplug and charge it everyday is a pain in the behind. I would prefer a fuss free solution. As long as u drive ur car every other day, ur car camera will not drain the car battery so quickly.

Using a clamp meter or multimeter, measure the power consumption at the car battery with the car camera turned on w/o starting the car. Then note ur car battery rating and use abt 80% of the rating(due to normal wear n tear of the battery life). Apply the formula P=I x V. U should able to work out how long ur car battery will last when fully drained.

Having used the blackview car camera for the last three days, here is my review.

It is basically a slimmer version of the milo can size car camera with lots of other functions which were lacking. You can adjust the recording time, 1min(default), 3min, 5min or 15mins. Can adjust EV, white balance and light frequancy. My unit came with simplified chinese langauge menu, I had to set it to english from the menu. When it start up, a lady speaking in russian greets u. When it shuts down, the lady says goodbye to u in russian too. The captured video format was the same as the milocan size camera but nite video is slightly better. My sandisk 8GB class4 microSD produces jerky video, however my sandisk 4GB class4 microSD works great. Do u guys need a sample video???

If u are thinking of getting the milo can size car cam, forget it. Get this new Blackview car camera. It is also still pretty much a plug n play car camera with better adjustable functions. Video quality is the same but nite video is slightly better. Still can make out license plate from one car length away in the night. thumbsup.gif This one is another keeper among my fleet of car cameras.

Await my next car camera, DOD-tech GSE580............. biggrin.gif

    Hi Bro,

can share your thoughts between the blackview and f900? night videos of blackview is better than f900?
am considering whether to use f900 on the front or blackview on the front.

the f900 is bigger.. so using it at the front.. I have to really find a good spot.. so as to hide it away from the sun.
am not sure whether i can position the blackview away from the sun too.

    thanks.

The video quality of F900 is the same as F500. Only extra feature F900 has is the swivel lens + motion sensor + wide angle lens(now F500 also have this).

Nite time video quality, Blackview will win both F500 and F900 cos these two were not built for clear nite recording.

But do note that the Blackview is only 720p HD while the F500 n F900 are Full 1080i HD. As I mentioned, functions, both F500 n F900 will win as they are built to be used as car camera and portable personal camera.

Hiding the Blackview??? It is slim and compact in build but the windscreen mount causes it not mount closely to the windscreen and hiding it in front of the rearview mirror. If it came with a simple backplate mount like the milo can size cam, u can use double tape to mount it very close to the windscreen thus able to hide it in front of the rearview mirror. I mounted it next to the rearview mirror.

I will take a picture to show u my mounting. I am going to send it back to Dealextreme today. They just sent me their RMA number and return address yesterday.

Yes, there is difference for different class of SD card. The higher the class, the less lag u get between files esp with HD recording. Cos they consume lots of mb while recording.

But if u are refering to older cameras of 320x240 or 640x480 resolution, a no class SD card will perform fine. No matter how fast the SD card, it does not matter cos u are limited by the camera capabilities.

Its the same as car. U want a fast car, u have to upgrade ur parts. U want a bread n butter car n just cruise along slowly, whatever performance parts u add on does not matter cos the driver just wana cruise along slowly.

Three days is the maximum I would say is safe. For 5 days, u will probably end up with a delepeted battery. Dont forget, besides ur car camera draining the car battery, ur car alarm, headunit n probably voltage stabiliser is also draining the car battery.

I would advise u to turn on the car camera, dont not start ur engine, measure the power consumption at the car battery. Then work out the time before ur car battery is drained until u are unable to start the car. Remember to factor in a certain % for wear n tear of ur car battery.

If u dont drive often, why not consider an external battery source to power ur car camera independently. Do check out the mobile chargers available in the market using lithium polymer high capacity batteries. U can look at them it the Comex show now at Suntec. There are branded ones like energiser, GP, etc......... Just get two, while one in use, u can charge the other one. Then swap them ard.

Fuse is a safety device. In case ur car camera shorted, exceed a certain amp, the fuse will blow thus cutting electric to ur car camera.

Without a fuse, if any short, ur car camera will burn and create a fire. Thus ur car will be in flames.

No one can force u to install a fuse but to have ur car burnt to crisp, u will cry. Play safe, ask ur installer to install the fuse. Its only abt 50cents to $1 for one fuse.

Every electrical appliance approved by PSB will have a fuse. It is the law for domestic appliance.

    Thanks, bro Adrianli.

I tot it the fuse was to protect the battery from being drained empty by the camera. So it is actually the other way round...(to protect the camera in case of a short-circuit).
  • 01 September 2011 - 01:14 PM
    Byond
To look at the overall picture, the fuse is to actually protect the car from burning to crisp (which resulted from a short circuit camera that is the cause of the fire)....

    Hi Bro,
Just to check. Would it be troublesome to connect the wiring to support the battery of the camera if i were to install a camera at rear view. I am looking at the interior of my ride,

For the front winscreen, i dont have a issue here as I can hide it along the rubber linings along the side wall of my ride, to the top panel of my rooftop...

but to extend the wiring from the front socket , all the way to rear side, it sure takes a long length of wire to hook it up...

any kind advice...or even recommendations on whether this can be done?

can't wait for the dod gse580 liao, not even sure if it's coming!
Got the f1000 from the sponsor of this forum (the iphone lookalike one).
Though without IR, the night video is better than dod f500. it has auto EV.
the day video is on par.
Using a class 10, the lag is 1 sec betw files.
it's simple to use and operate, just hook & forget.
do note the size is slim but overall it's bigger than the dod f500.
wish there is motion detection though cool.gif
    overall it's a goodbuy for me . YMMV biggrin.gif

btw bro, can share how much did u get the f1000?

Bro Adrianli did it... I followed his advice and did it too.

Saved a lot of trouble on keep changing the rear camera battery... now just on the car and the rear car cam also on! happy.gif

Can ask the car accessories shops to run for you...

I got my rear done by a car accessories shop together in a package with other things being done. I watch them do, it is pretty much very simple. they tap the power from the fuse box and then run the extension along the bottom of the car and then up from the rear seat to the rear view windscreen.

Pretty easy to DIY once u see how it is done. Just need to pry open the plastic panels at the bottom of the door entrance between the sill plate. Once u open the plastic panel, u can also see the car manufacturer also running their wires the same way.

But if u lazy, just hide it under the front carpet to the rear carpet and then under the rear seat to the rear windscreen.

U will need to explore ur own car. Recently my fren n I helped someone strip his lancer interior n boot to almost bare to rid of an ant nest. I am surprise to see how easy it was done. Never park under an ant nest or have food available in ur car!!!! We emptied at least six cans by insecticide.

It is pasted from inside. Any car accessories shop or tinting shop will be able to do the job. I dont know where it is done, it is done by the dealer.

I hate the front windscreen shade cos its blocking my view. I need the full windscreen for a better view cos I am tall and sit a little higher than others.

Yes I know. But my HUD is 2nd hand with missing digits and daytime sometimes cant even tell the speed. Also I did not calibrate the HUD, it show abt 5km/h faster than my speedo. The instructions to calibrate it a little ku ku. It expects me to drive constantly at 40km/h and then press two buttons together to calibrate it. hur.gif I never got to do such stunts while driving.

So you'll be using these same Class of cards to test your unit or the normal Class 4/6 ones? Would like to know how the GSE-580 performs with the more common class of cards.

Hongkong custom is pretty fast in clearing the goods. The delay most of the time is with Singapore Custom, as usual.

I keep the outdated models or continue to use them for other applications. Otherwise just put in the storeroom.

I am not rich lah. These car cameras are not that expensive. Just chasing after technology which one day I may retire from. Unable to keep up with the fast changing technology.

Hi. A external battery pack gives direct power to the camera, but what if in the event of the short-circuit of the camera? Will the battery pack be able to cut off power automatically? I understand the fuse will block the current (when power is drawn from the car battery), but how about an external battery pack leh? confused.gif

It depends on the type of external battery pack u use. Some has build-in circuitry to prevent overdischarge of the battery.

If it is DIY external battery pack, then u have to decide urself.

But under normal circumstances n useage, the car camera wouldnt short circuit. If u open it up n done some re-wiring then...........or if water gets into its circuit.

I read the specs of F900LHD is using "loop recording". What is that actually huh???

Then some camera has (removal) rechargeable battery, some have built-in battery. Which is better leh???

Every car camera will have loop recording. That means it will overwrite older files while recording when the memory card is full.

To me, removeable or in-build battery does not matter at all.

Comparing the Blackview to the GSE580(from the manual) :

GSE580 have the following which Blackview dont have :

    - Auto IR
    - Motion sensor
    - Optional GPS coordinates stamping on video
    - Optional speed stamping on video
    - Full HD

I tested blackview, the things that very annoying / sometimes feel weird is the lady who speaks " Huan Ying Shi Yong BlackView" when the unit turn on smash.gif smash.gif

Hi. A external battery pack gives direct power to the camera, but what if in the event of the short-circuit of the camera? Will the battery pack be able to cut off power automatically? I understand the fuse will block the current (when power is drawn from the car battery), but how about an external battery pack leh? confused.gif

About 2 years ago, my car boot got scratched 2x within a month. I totally pissed off. Bought a mini security camera, Wireless transmitter , receiver , 4 channel DVR & 12AH re-chargeable sealed battery. What i did was to hid the camera on a tissue box place behind the car, then the video goes to the wireless transmitter. The transmitter & camera get the supply from the battery, i add in 1A fuse to the + of the power cable that goes out from the battery. As the transmitter gets hot over the night, i place 2 heatsink used for CPU stacked ontop of the transmitter. The car park is at level 2 & my home is at level 7. I installed the receiver & DVR at my home. I sometimes i do a playback on my DVR to view what actually happen at night & the most hassle is that every morning i need to remove the battery, bring it back home & charge it. when night comes, i will bring the full charged battery back to the car boot & install back the cable. Anyway i did not get the culprit & wasted my effort. Did anyone as crazy as me before?

    Hi Lurpsexx,

As for the GSE580, i cant sell anything lower than $380. I am sorry i have rules to follow, i hope you understand this.
If i lower than their suggested RRP,DOD will not supply GSE580 to me anymore. As for the SDHC Class 10, i have to buy 10pcs to get the price low & DOD told me that they do not have RRP for SDHC card. Therefore i can sell it at a low price & i will prefer to sell it as a bundle, easier for us.

As for your below question, please let me clarify.

    - Optional GPS coordinates stamping on video
This is a software option, meaning you can choose whether to display the GPS co-ordinates on the video recorded or just leaving ---------------.

Just additional info.GSE580 will save these GPS co-ordinates in the memory card, this is needed when you need to see the google map & speed of the vehicle during playback.

    - Optional speed stamping on video
This is also a software option, meaning you can choose whether to stamp you vehicle speed on the video recorded in Km/h , MPH or just turn off. Please note that the unit will display the speed reading when GPS signal detected.

Again just additional info idea.gif idea.gif . You can set your over speed limit, meaning when you enable the speed stamping option, you will see the speed display on the video, say you set your speed limit to 80km/h , then your car speed is 90km/h, it will display ---.

I hope the above information help.

I don't think you were crazy to do that... anyone of us would have done the same, but perhaps not with so much gadget.

But, do you mean you place your camera, battery, transmitter and heatsink in a location outside the car? What is someone snatch it away?

    Hi TVT,

But the most frustration things is thaat alot $ spent on this set up.
The Battery & Wireless transmitter with heat sink was place in car boot.
The funny part, i always bring a empty box down to place the battery in & then carry the heavy battery up to my home & vice versa. This is to avoid misunderstanding.

The optional is already build-into the GSE580. It is whether u wish to turn it on as explained by the agent above.

Download the manual and read it. It will get u excited!!! Like me. biggrin.gif

Well, that was 2 years ago. During then, such gadgets may have been bulky and expensive. Thou u didn't catch the bugger, but at least he didn't dare to come back to scratch your car. Probably he knows you installed the camera lah. smile.gif

If today you were to do so again, you probably only need one camera with a rechargeable battery which can last till morning, and that's it.

Will wait for Bro Transcendant Solutions to post its review on GSE580 to decide further....

Maybe cuz you declared so had to park outside. Couldn't you have removed it and place it in a locker before driving in? But I see alot of regulars in my camp having those in-car camera but they just drive in also. lol.

Above S$400 will have to pay GST. But most shops either never state the price of the items or just put a lower price.
