Michael Jackson's teen daughter attempts suicide, says her mother

LOS ANGELES (REUTERS) - Paris Jackson, the 15-year-old daughter of late pop star Michael Jackson, was rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital on Wednesday after an apparent suicide attempt, her mother, Debbie Rowe, told entertainment TV programme Entertainment Tonight.

Paris Jackson, the second of Jackson's three children, had "a lot going on (lately)", Rowe told Entertainment Tonight. Messages left with Rowe's attorney and representatives of the singer's estate were not immediately returned.

Celebrity website TMZ.com, which first reported the suicide attempt, said Paris had been taken from her home in Calabasas, California, by ambulance at about 2am time, citing unnamed sources.

Jackson, who died in 2009 from a lethal dose of surgical anesthetic propofol, was married to Rowe from 1996 to 1999, and the couple had two children together, Prince Michael in 1997 and Paris in 1998. Jackson later had a third child, Prince Michael II, also known as Blanket.

Excavator accident: Driver trapped in cabin believed to be dead

The driver of an excavator that toppled on Thursday morning is believed to be dead.

hor hor, those who just visited taiwan recently should go wash your stomach unsure.gif

Watch what you eat at Taiwan's night markets
    Taiwan, June 5, 2013
    The Straits Times

Deep-fried, barbecued, braised, processed, and laden with fat and salt or sugar.

Taiwan may be a paradise for food lovers with its ubiquitous night markets, eateries and convenience shops, but it is also a minefield for those who yearn to eat healthily.

The discovery of toxic starch in products such as meat balls, the fish-paste snack of oden and tapioca balls used in desserts such as bubble tea has shocked Taiwanese and highlights the popularity of foods that are pleasing to the tongue but do nothing for health.

The scare erupted last month, when manufacturers were found to have added maleic anhydride - an industrial substance which can cause kidney failure but boosts chewiness, a mouthfeel many Taiwanese like - to powdered starch used by eateries and food stalls.

"I would say that the average Taiwanese diet is not very healthy. The Taiwanese enjoy eating fried chicken steaks, pork chop rice, minced fatty pork rice, dumplings and beef noodle soup - all high in saturated fat but low in fibre," says Ms Liu I-chun, 43, a housewife who was born in Taiwan and emigrated to Singapore as a child. She has been living in Taipei for more than six years with her husband, a Singaporean pharmaceutical expatriate, and mostly eats out.

"They also like to add a lot of sauce to their food, which is loaded with sodium and/or sugar. Many of their soups are thickened by starch and beverages and desserts are often too sweet," she tells The Sunday Times.

French teacher shows 11-year-old pupils the horror film Saw

A French teacher has recently been reprimanded for showing the horror film Saw to his classroom of 11-year-old pupils.

Saw, a 2004 horror film, was about a group of people being forced to participate in a sadistic game where they were put in various situations that usually produced gory results.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the teacher, Jean-Baptiste Clement, told his pupils that "this will be your first horror film." He justified his actions by stating that it was to educate the pupils about the extreme cruelties of human nature.

The situation was brought to light by a father of one of the students, when he noticed his son coming home looking visibly uneasy.

After a disciplinary meeting, Clement was given a one-day suspension for the school to conduct an in-depth investigation into the matter. It is possible that the teacher will be given more severe punishment after the investigation is over.
