    Good win for Pool

At the start of the game around 10 minutes

The Spurs manager shouted to his team

"No long ball, no long ball, play football."

This was because his centre backswas

hoofing the ball forward from the back.

You would expect a team like Spurs

to know the manager wants them to play

    the ball on the ground.

Though i think unker still takes a mean penalty. Lloris would have stopped the penalty if it wasnt inch perfect. he actually almost got to it but the power and accuracy was unstoppable.

yes, at this point, i only feel safe if SG is taking the penalty

    Actually this brings to mind:

    - just don't ask Mignolet, Sakho, many Coutinho to take. Coutinho cos his shooting quite suspect, although sometimes his through ball passes are dead accurate but risky lor...

    - then again, back in Sep when we beat Boro in the league cup, there was a marathon penalty shootout. I recall when watching the replays, almost every single one of the penalties taken from both sides (which include the Pool players of course), were impossible to save. How come almost every player (since they went to 14-13) can take such brilliant penalties I don't know...

think mignolet was the best player...he techniques are netter than before and he is at least commanding his backline.

balo is also communicating more with his team mates but he seems relaxed in the last 10mins. surprising that he was able to keep his cool even when agitated.

6.5/10 performance although we kept possession.

    skrtel is getting abit edgy...

a win is precious for our confidence in the next game...

Good away win against a recent bogey team....
Showed resilience and character to come back from a goal down quite early in the game.
    Progression into next round.
Mignolet has responded well since he was dropped.

What I like is ballotelli is trying to play the ball a bit faster, doesn't hold on to the ball for too long and in tune with the flow of the team. And of course he smiles. I thought that was a sign that liverpool can be his home, a club that he finally feels comfortable with.

Allen definitely cannot play the Lucas role. That I will leave it to Can but he seems more like a box to box midfielder than a truly defensive midfielder. Still I will put him just in front of the defence followed by allen(if there is no better midfielder) and
Henderson slightly in front just between the line of the attacking midfielders and Allen. Allen just run around do the chasing harassing and pressing hahaha.

I think JA's presence in the liverpool senior team is due to these few reasons:

    1. The club's attempt to make a profit out of Injury Prone Lucas while he is still wanted by other clubs

    2. Cover for SG and LL

    A vital win :)
A huge step to FA Cup final :))

Am I the only one to say that we have made a huge U-turn in our performance results? :))
We are grinding out results !!

    YES !!!

Yes, it does seem like we have turned a corner, and is playing better football and getting results.

But it is not all rosy.

Ideally our defense should be even more imperious - at the moment there are still times when 3 of them take turns to make mistakes that reliable defenders must avoid. Strikers make one mistake, they might just miss the goal. Defenders make one mistake, they might just let opponents score Luckily we were not always punished against palace.

At least goalie seems fault-free that night.

The biggest blow now is Lucas is injured (sigh again) just as he - and the team - found form. His contribution is very important. No like for like replacement, and it tells. Allen too lightweight and positioning still no where near.

Moreno seems to be very restricted in his positioning/movement, and we are not able to exploit the left flank using the left wing back much.

Of the attacking and creative players, it's good that most of them seems to be hitting form too, but of course the imperfection is that there is no one standout guy that can do no (hardly any) wrong like last season :D

With all of them showing flashes of brilliance now and then, the good thing is we seem to have many options now, but the bad thing (linked to para above), is that there doesn't seem to be one obvious standout first team. Sturridge, Balo, Sterling, Ibe, Lallana, Coutinho, Markovic, Hendo, Moreno, Johnson, etc. will all be fighting for 7 places. Even Lambert and Borini had shown some hopes 1-2 mth ago, and if add Flano, SG in, then lagi difficult to choose.

This compares sharply to the Oct-Nov period, where no matter what option we chose, we simply don't look like we won't lose a match...

If Coutinho can be more accurate in his shooting, i'm sure he will win us many points. Now 50% of his shots are straight at keepers, 40% off target, with maybe 10% placed well, but good chance blocked by defense. He does create lots of openings for himself, so if can convert more of them, it's going to be immense.

When Coutinho is off-form, nobody else comes close in terms of creativity. When teams park buses, we don't have too many players who hold keys to unlocking them. Lallana and Sterling, now Ibe, maybe can share some load, but it's still heavily dependent on Coutinho. With more teams recognizing this and closing him down, the rest really need to stand up and be counted more.

Dead ball: while SG now has maybe only 70% of his previous speed, and stamina 50%, distance covered 40%, shooting 50%, tackling, 40%, etc there is noone else in the team who can take a corner or free kick decently And of course we haven't been tested when it comes to penalty awarded without SG on the field If nothing else, if we get a last-min penalty while being a goal down, chances of SG getting it in is quite high. This is the only one thing that he has perhaps improved from the time when he was younger. His calmness helps.

Then the last thing is height lor. Again I saw Allen marking someone who is one head taller than him during corners

I don't know what happen and whether Henderson wanted to take the penalty or what but he shouldn't doubt balotelli taking penalties. Luckily sturridge step in if not balotelli might be affected. Other than gerrard, lambert and balotelli have been first choices in their previous clubs. Is Henderson first choice for sunderland before? Or 2nd choice at liverpool?

Anyway 1-0 win is better than 0-0. Anyone notice Bilic has become skinnier? Smoke too much is it? Haha.

    A home win.
    A clean sheet.
    Super Mario to the rescue.....
Against a very decent opponent, can't really complain about the result.
Just hoped that it is enough to progress.
At least with the result, Besiktas will be compelled to attack in the 2nd leg.

Lucky to win. Besiktas closes opp down v quick. Only Ibe seems to regularly get the better of them. Balo scores penalty but sturridge is unhappy not to have taken it...

I think sturridge is not happy that Henderson did not take ball away from balotelli to take the penalty.

It's a slender margin to go into 2nd leg, still better than don't have...

Though, hope that the penalty dispute would not have affected individual trust and teamwork, for Liverpool FC comes above all else that matters :)

I will definitely choose balo over hendo or sturridge to take penalties. N balo also "made up" with hendo after the penalty. Hopefully all is well. N of cos we will see the media stirring things up.

    100% of missing.

    Took 1 Miss 1.

N wat abt ibe. Another great game by him. I think almost all his dribbles he got past the defender. On top form n shoulD remain in the starting 11,

I saw the footage of that.

It didn't look like JH made a fuss. Balo wanted the ball and to take it badly, JH says ok, go ahead.

JH wasn't exactly thrilled after Balo scored the penalty, but he didn't show negative body language as well.

I agree that Stevie G should have kept things in the dressing room.

I think you are right to say Henderson didn't make a fuss. It was more like sturridge making a fuss to Henderson to stamp his authority as captain to take the penalty rather than let balotelli take it. I feel from this whole thing proves that Henderson shows that he is a better captain than most people think. He is really a modern captain who is not afraid of making the right decision than to allow his appointment and ego to get the better of him.

What Hendo should do (as a captain) is to ask DS to back off down since he has already decided to hand over the penalty kick duty to MB.

I think there's too much hype previously abt how impt DS is to LP. Well, he is, but humble is def not in this guy's dictionary.

Mario has shown more fighting power recently, not sure if it's to do w DS return, but it's a good sign for LP.

End of d day, it's BR's tactical ability and people management skills to optimize the situation, and bring out the best in each individual ....

Our manager has to learn the Liverpool way.

If he wants to show how smart he is then

he has to just win trophies.

LVG has the same problem he plays his players

out of position so that if they do well

he takes credit as a genius.

Unfortunately Rooney in midfield and Fellaini as

    striker just does not work.

All this reminds me of Rafa.

He put Carragher in central defence when

he was always a midfielder and Lucas as

defensive midfield when he was known

    as an attacking midfielder.

Haha carragher was also right back and left back too. How about rafa putting gerrard at right midfield and forward for good measure lol.

Tonight's match at least not so late like 130am, for which I dislike.

As for balotelli, I think even without taking into consideration sturridge coming back, he has indeed show improvement in terms of work rate, simple passing, doesn't hold on to the ball for too long, runs more into space, more in tune with the team's playing style.

The interpretation of hardworking really depends on indifvidual. To the best man for the job, joe Allen is hardworking because he runs around like a chicken without a head, gerrard is hardworking because he reacts rather than preempt and rather than makes things simple, skrtel is hardworking because he goes around tackling and pushing players in penalty box. Even the best for the job is hardworking, unlike last season,,his left hand is always busy inside his pocket when a goal is scored. Too busy to come out to celebrate :p

You are right. Gerrard stated as a right back and when Rafa put him at right midfield

he scored 23 goals that season. When Torres joined, Rafa put Gerrard just behind him

to play passes for Torres to run onto and I think they scored about 50 goals between them.
