    subaru's response about grace note.

Thank you for contacting Subaru of America, Inc. We appreciate you taking time out of your day to contact us.

The Gracenote database is designed to be upgradeable by a Subaru retailer technician; this function is not designed for a customer to use.

Although we don't currently have an available Gracenote update for your 2015 Legacy, our engineers are looking into the possibility of offering this type of update in the near future.

Thanks for the opportunity to be of assistance.

You wrote to them? I know this topic has cropped up on various Subaru forums around the world, including Legacygt.com, but I've yet to Google a solution. Other makes like Toyota have posted Gracenote updates but I doubt they are compatible. Maybe I'll write Gracenote directly. I think I might even have an old business card somewhere if I can find it on my messy desk.

I don't think I'd want a Gracenote update from SOA (Subaru of America), but from Subaru in China. Do you think an American Gracenote update would include Chinese album info?

    Just a question to ask.
If install blow off valve only. And not changing anything else.
Does it do more good to turbo or more harm to the turbo?

FXT price up by 6k to 133K as of today's MI webpage. Bookings gonna slow down for sure. Got to be patient then.

    Price list since 27May16, attached.

Since last 2 Saturday, Subaru no longer advertise Forester on Straits Time. Does it mean Ex-stock is sold out?

    Hello,

I'm new to the forum, have a Forester 2.0 bought end of last year. Thinking of putting in new solar film and doing some soundproofing (the road and wind noise a bit loud). Looked around, found many solar film, not sure which is good. Also dunno where to do soundproofing for Forester. Any good recommendations? thanks!!

I was recommended by fellow owners to go to Zen for window film. Their package price for Forester including sun roof is $430. Workmanship is pretty good and most importantly, their film is decent.

Myold car's film (think it's Rike Cool)compared to my 2 colleague's Latio stock film was already quite good. I find the Zen one even better than my old car's film.

When I was at Zen, another Forester was there too and he had the stock film provided by MI.He was there to replace the stock film with Zen's. Zen boss took the Forester stock film and folded it togive a double layer and put it under a lamp to test the heat. The heat rejection was quite bad. The single layer Zen film cuts more heatunder the same lamp. Zen contact number is 98459289 (Jimmy).

There is 1 flim which i can't rem the name now. It is a clear flim that reject 90+% IR (source of heat in car) but 50% clarity. For new car, u can keep it for 3 years before inspection.

    Vezel vs FXT

    (1) both are cars
    (2) both made in Japan
    (3) one always sees the other car's butt
    (4) in MY FXT always like to park next to a Honda
    (5) In MY FXT get scratch, Vezel don't..

MI does soundproofing (which doubles as heat insulation) for all Subaru models, FYI. It isn't cheap - was quoted $1,150 for four doors plus roof for a Legacy - but, depending on how important soundproofing is to you, it might be worth it. A quiet cabin naturally give a more premium feel, zens you out in traffic, and of course lets you enjoy your music more, which is why I'm still considering it. Do let us know if you manage to find a cheaper quote elsewhere.

May I know which package did you take up from ZenCool? I trust that you have done comparison with others and believe ZenCool is value for money compared to those double the price.

    Appreciate your advise. Thanks.

For Forester, $430 will give the best package already.

What I like about Subaru's AWD doesn't require breaking traction to enjoy. The handling simply feels more precise and predictable when driving fast (but within speed limits), compared to many FWD and RWD cars I've driven. It's about confidence-inspiring poise, and steering accuracy.

And when you do break traction, I've got to give credit to the electronics. VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) and active torque vectoring compensate for both understeer (FWD prob) and oversteer (RWD prob) to keep you on your line, and this comes with all Subaru models I know of except the XV. Many cars comes with smart traction control these days, but traction control is inherently more effective when you have more wheels to distribute power to.

Of course, there are those who say that AWD is boring precisely because it's so safe. And I have a buddy who excels at RWD throttle steering, which you can't do with AWD - at least not in the same way. But my needs are different, so give me boringly safe and predictable any day, please, thank you very much.

Think XV comes with VDC except active torque vectoring.

Went to MI TPY for some touch up paint due to paint chips from flying stones... End up took up the Clasani undercarridge coating. damage is $290. SA mentioned a lot of ppl took up the coating and it can prevent rust and improve sound insulation from road noise a bit. I sorta buy into his sales pitch. lol. Offset with $8000 DUO points ($50 off) ,end up paying $260 (after gst).

On my way home via PIE towards changi, I kinda feel that the road noise seemed a little more muffled? Or maybe its just my imagination? anyway, they pasted 2 stickers on the boot window to indicate coating was done...

Any bros did the coating? Any feedback?

I received an invitation for new owner workshop for next sun (25 Jun), Anyone going? I should expect a lot of new forester owners since i saw the collection room filled with foresters of various colours!

Is the workshop useful? Anyone went already?

They spray a kind of foam with will harden to become a semi-flexible rubbery coating.

supposed to last as long as lifetime of vehicle if its not damage by sharp objects or extreme weather conditions such as winter.

Yup. find this feature super cool too

1 tip for those who washes their own car. If you carry the key with you while washing the car, water splashes and soap suds on the front door handles can trigger the car to lock and unlock. To overcome this, leave the key inside the car. The car will chime and not lock becos it senses the key is inside the car

Let me share something that is ironic. I once bought a management car from MI. Those car they registered themselves and probably driven by management. I went for servicing and they also strongly recommended the anti rust thingy.

I asked them how come you didn't do for your own car? The SA gave a "look" ...

I believe the anti rust does work but think they also know its not a "real need". Useful for those I believe who likes to drive on the beach and kena exposed to salt water.

Maybe what is required is not the Gracenote version to be same but the version of the main HU software has to be same as the HU that is successful with Chinese display?

If HU software already same version and still not working, perhaps is because the one that can display Chinese has the Chinese language pack/font installed while the one not working does not have required language pack/fonts?

Main thing perhaps can attempt is for someone to bring a USB with Chinese titled songs to try on the showroom/test car and confirm can display, and then show the MI service staff that the owner's own car cannot display.

Then see if can consider as covered under the warranty for MI to fix for free.

There was a need in the past. I remember my parent's generation time, the cars can actually rust under the paint.

Nowadays, the steel, without the paint, is already protected to some extent through galvanisation - i.e. a coating of another metal that will protect the steel surface and also sacrifiice/oxidise itself first before the steel will rust.

So in normal city use no need rust proofing.

For use outside of city or in winter countries where they throw salt on the roads to melt the ice, not sure how well the galvanisation can protect against rust.

If go to beach or off-road, with or without rust proofing, most important is still to do a good wash to get rid of the dirt/salt etc.

Tend to agree with you. Manufacturing tech and quality has come a long long way. I would think that the metal surface come with some level of rust protection. Having said that, the metal is only protected if the covering material (paint or manufacturing process) is intact... the under carriage is prone to more abuse than the sides of the car, so higher chance of the protective layer coming off... stone chipping it off for instance.

So the rust protection may not be a bad thing. Hearsay that the other +ve side effect includes improved sound insulation. :D

    Probably a font issue.

If anyone is willing to go down MI to compare Chinese fonts on demo cars and our cars, I'd be happy to meet you there with my Legacy to support the case. I'll even bring a USB drive with Chinese songs. Anyone with a 7-inch Fuji Ten HU (not the 6.2-inch HU in FNA, etc) can be affected, which means all you FXT, OB, Legacy and Levorg folks are included. Unless you don't care about Chinese characters on your HU. I do.

MI offers three different underside coatings, and at least two of them are Clasani coats. All of them reduce road noise to some extent. The more coats, the quieter your car. Depends how much that matters to you. Matters to me.

MI offers three different underside coatings, and at least two of them are Clasani coats. All of them reduce road noise to some extent. The more coats, the quieter your car. Depends how much that matters to you. Matters to me.

You'll be interested in proper sound proofing too I guess. 4doors and wheel arches at least? I did. :)

Enjoying it! 4 doors, 2 layers. Front arch, rear boot area, whole floor - 1 layer. Total need about 22-24 pieces of Sp materials (Stp brand). Each piece (depending on the thickness) cost 50-70 each. You do the math. :)

MI doing how many layers? Using what materials?

Insurance usually is excluded from the cost available for financing coz differs for each buyer. But will form part of the total amount you need to pay before they pass you the car.

My math fail leh. Okay, so about $1.4k based on median cost, excluding labour, but covering more total area than what MI was proposing to me. Dunno how many layers or what specific material cuz I got sticker shock and stopped inquiring. But when I brought up my concerns about weight, my SA said the material wasn't oil-based and hence wouldn't be that heavy. Sounds like it could involve some sort of applied coating in addition to layers of material. I'll ask for more details at my 5k servicing so that I'll be able to compare it more usefully to your package.

I don't think I'd do the floor because the Clasani coats are quite effective, but I can see why the front arches could be worthwhile. Why is the boot area worth doing?

Hmm, I'm also can't quite decide on doing soundproofing for my fxt. The car itself is actually very quiet already. The engine is pretty silent except when u rev hard and need the sudden urge to overtake. Even then the engine sounds pretty refine. Wind noise is noticeable at > legal hw speeds of 100,110 and beyond. Even the doors are pretty well insulated as I find the HK system to work well even when listening to sounds with heavier bass. The doors may not feel as solid as a bmw x3, but they certainly don't vibrate or sound hollow. The biggest culprit i find is the road noise, especially driving over very rough patches of road. To be honest, even a bmw 3 series with 18 inch wheels suffer from pretty bad road noises despite its excellent sound insulation. Doing a complete enhance floor and wheel arches sound proofing is the only way to reduce road noise. But i find this to be a bit too extensive as it requires the removal of all seats (our electric chairs!) and floor carpet, which i feel very uncomfortable about it.

BTW, the clasani undercoat does help a bit on the road noise. On well-paved roads, the car appear to be more silent. On rougher patches, road noise also sounded more muffled. $290 is quite well spent, especially its done by our agent MI.

Hmm... But SP for boot is kinda questionable leh. I used to layer my boot floor with 2 layers of mat and that will reduce some noise from the undercarriage. I know of some who also SP the boot cover but aside from making the boot cover heavier and close with a nicer thud, i'm not sure how that will help in reducing noise? Some audio shops also do boot SP by removing the spare tire and filling it up with SP mats.

Actually, MI's proposal for SP the 4 doors and roof is quite tempting except for the slightly high cost. its about $1150 for Forester. Can offset $200 (for every $1000 spent) if u have enough DUO points. essentially almost 20% discount. But then again, i doubt it will help to reduce road noise further which is the main culprit. Change to better tires may be the cheaper and more effective option to reduce road noise further.

Sigh. Got my car and first day scratched like badly at turning in MCSP.

    Sad.

Tan Chong charges about $200 for full bumper respray if no dents. Half day job. MI might charge similar since they are affiliated.

Wah, no joke. Anyone else replicated this? I don't use Bluetooth for music, only phone hands-free, so I haven't had the chance to test this yet. If true, then it's not a general font support problem, but perhaps support for only particular font encodings. Today, while listening to Apple Music via Lightning cable, an English song displayed no metadata at all.

Honestly, I also find my Legacy very quiet, especially after doing the various undercarriage coats, which is why it's a bit hard to justify splurging on additional soundproofing, though of course it's always easy to be tempted.

I don't like the idea of removing panelling without good reason because you always risk introducing rattling and other noises, when before everything was swee. And that would drive me nuts. If I wanted to upgrade speakers, then maybe I'd consider soundproofing at the same time, but the HK system's turned out more than good enough for me, such that my old Eton speakers I planned to install are still sitting in my store room.

Interesting to know that MI's soundproofing price ($1,150) is the same for both Forester and Legacy, which means Outback's probably the same too.

Thanks for the bumper respray pricing. So far, Nissan and Subaru service pricing's been identical for many things, such as auto-fold mirrors. I wouldn't say that MI and TC are affiliated. I'd say they are essentially the same company, both owned and operated by TCI, with some staff even moving between Subaru and Nissan showrooms.

So you've had luck with Chinese characters via Bluetooth too, eh? I must try.

Actually I find it quite accurate and useful. It's better to be more sensitive than less for sensors. Anyway, it only beeps on reverse so just get used to it (like your wife's nagging)

For soundproofing, I suggest going to a good and reputable audio shop. Not sure how good MI's workmanship is but dismantling and re-assembling panels and parts tend to loosen things. The danger is after a while, u may get vibrating/ rattling becos parts were not as tight and put together securely

Hmm I nv had any problems with Chinese characters displaying on the HU when playing music off my iPhone. But I'm haven tried using Usb sticks with MP3s. Dun think I will need to do that since I'm Apple Music subscription.

Think I will skip the MI SP. quite happy with my xt sound insulation already. My wife and I can enjoy a peaceful conversation without having to talk loudly compared to our previous Honda, Nissan and Mazda. Sat on my friend's 320i (current gen) and it didn't sound any quieter... In fact I think his low profile 18 inch sports tires generate more road noise. Haa.

Thanks bro. I am still considering whether to sign up the servicing package from MI. So, was thinking to use opportunity to visit in laws for servicing. Unfortunately her family is all about Honda and Toyota. It is the usual 20,30k servicing I am asking.
