2015 Forester 2.0 part 16

I total agreed with your comment if there is only "take" but not required to "give."It is a no brainer for someone whomdon't want extra power without the requirement to "Give."

Nevertheless, if that extra power is so important, those small or mid size car (Altis, Mazda 3, Civic etc) can close shop already. Ppls should not drive a small ccB&Bcar as even a N.A. 2L can't even fit to drive on the road w/o and additional extra power given. In some turbo folk content, it isless confident to drive in traffic condition [laugh]

I kinda disagree bro. For its price point, the added power is a bonus. While not a sports car, the power available on tap do give more confidence in traffic condition which usually are not found in such SUV class. ( ignore cars like x6 etc).

So while u should drive and treat it like at normal car, do be happy to know when needed the power is there to do your bidding.

In your content "fun" mean u can overtake other car easily because you are not skilled enough do it with a less performance car or, can speed a 150km/h at expressway?

In our country, every now and then is traffic jam. Even someone manage to overtake me, I will tell them that "see you at next traffic light." And truly, that someone is waiting for me at next traffic light [laugh]

Sweeping statement aside. Should have some context of where the writer is from. Many friends I know in the States have multiple vehicles, a suv/mpv for ferrying the kids and groceries, a weekend fun ride for trills. Trills depends on what they like, it could be a offroader or a performance sports car for kicks. Bottom line is, the cars are more affordable and options aplenty.

Here in SG, I for one can only afford a single car and I would try to make the best out of the resource available to me. So a spacious and comfortable day to day drive, with the knowledge that I have the capacity for "fun" when the weekends come.

Your definition of fun differs from me. Fun doesn't mean irresponsibly driving on the road. There's always the option of tracking up north, or whenever the heck tracks are built in SG. :)

    Axela72

Agreed. If the car is required to drive up north, then what you meant is very valid. But what you meant is minority. Cant represent the typical owner that doesn't drive up north.

    Hi bros,

New XT owner here :) I accidently threw away the key plate . Did not know what it is used for until i read the manual. Anyone know how much is the replacement? Asked my SE but he told me to ask the mechanics during 1st servicing.

Agreed. If the car is required to drive up north, then what you meant is very valid. But what you meant is minority. Cant represent the typical owner that doesn't drive up north.

From my daily travels, I notice the vast majority of Foresters being sold are the XT (different bumper design). The fact there are choices available on the market simply means that different people have different needs. The best choice for yourself may not be the best choice for the next guy.

I suspect for the guys who went XT they value the following:

For a $10,000 price premium, $900 more annual depreciation, $2 more annual road tax, and 0.9km/litre more thirst, they get 4k more OMV, 89 more horsepower, 152 more newton metres torque, electric tailgate, 18 inch alloys, and some other interior bits and bobs. I've left out insurance, because it is dependent on the individual.

For an SUV that runs 4WD, a 2 litre motor putting out 140hp is barely adequate. You're down more than 50% horsepower, 50% slower to 100kph and only return 1km/litre more in fuel economy? I call that a bad tradeoff. I'd take the XT anytime over the 2.0i.But that's me.

You could throw 10k at a 2.0i and not get it near the XT. According to SGCarmart, MI's margin on the 2.0i is 28%, and 22% on the XT. With a much better feature set, and a thinner profit margin, for the buyer, the XT is a better deal, even without factoring performance into the equation.

No point all the argument here.

No idea. If XT is that worthy than the N.A. counterpart, why would more than 50% in theForester.orgvote for the N.A. vs the XT, even though most ofvocal member are XT owner?

Not to mention that their list price difference over there is not more than 3k. Ours priceis higher over here for XT is due to the 5k penalty on Cevs. Probably the mass market still prefer reliability, cheaper to maintain than power. Just like over in sg, why many ppls still prefer made in Thailand vs those made in Japan even though at the bottom of our heart, we know that made in Japan is better

From another perspective, it is not a good pt. If XT is better or higher seller, why would MI want to earn thinner profit than the N.A? It could mean that MI take the cut in order to attract morebuyer [sly]

    because target customer
not everyone wants to throw in additional $10k
so the only way is to reduce profit margin
if want buyer to part additional $10k must give better value
you compare bmw 520 and 528 in fact 528 is more value for money in view for the specs and power but not everyone wants to pay more

    Axela72,

Thanks for all your views. Your spend a lot of time on the forum, even during working hours. You run your own business?

Forester.Org folks have the 2.5L NA. Not our local 2.0NA

Anyway, agree to each his own. Turbo does not necessarily mean higher maintenance. Likewise, a badly maintained NA will give more issues.

You got the 2.0NA, right? Congrats on the ride...

Actual fact, i only start reading other forester forum after i have book the car. My earlier post is to hightlight on the 2 sec dwelling time on both start and stop for Turbo which someone here previous stated not required. Nothing to do with other aspect until someone touch on them.

I am clearing my annual leave atm. So very free.

Yr comment On maintainence is again subjective. Not apple to apple comparsion. U should compare the same owner that poorly maintain his N.A. vs his Turbo. I bet his N.A. will last slightly longer than his Turbo:) pls correct me if i am wrong. Ty

Fun is in the drive and not necessarily getting to your destination faster.

Moreover for every traffic light that retained the faster guy, there's always one that let him pass but not the slower guy. =)

Frankly I am not sure why we are chatting on maintenance of NA vs Turbo.

If you book an NA, enjoy and take good care of it. We know you booked one, so good on your and your NA's longevity.

Subaru is a pretty reliable car to start off with, minus the oil leak issues in the 2.5NA in the pre 2014 models, which has since been rectified.

    Have fun !

When1st test drive N.A. forester, I already feel shiok because I seldom drive a > 1.6L car. likewise, if I drive a 1k torque car, I may not feel fun to drive because I may not be able to control the car and resultant to accident [laugh]

    Hahah..

It seems like FXT is crap to you. I wouldn't imagine what is your impression of Forester NA then.

Put bluntly, if it wasn't a family car I'd consider it. If it were a little more nimble, or a little quicker, I personally wouldn't mind having a turbocharger. But it's a family car, it's meant to carry your kids and your stuff from Point A to Point B in a comfortable, safe manner. It's not meant for the track, it's not meant to zip in and out of traffic, and it's not meant to race kids in Mustangs driving down the highway.

I couldn't have said it better. Coming from LGT, it's really nothing to shout about, not in terms of speed, handling, or agility. It's just a safe, taller vehicle which my passengers prefer. It can't corner for nuts despite being the XT version, it's heavy and sluggish unless you boost, and then your fuel efficiency goes down. It's not very luxurious or high class, or has lots of bells and whistles, and with the CVT, not that engaging to drive anyway.

I only buy it because there is not that many choices at that price.

You think people would mind driving a altis, mazda 3, civic if it comes with 400 bhp, 1000 torque?

Power is less important when it increase the cost of the selling price.

Haha.. Someone told me subaru AWD is crap and it is pointless in urban SG but RWD is much more important in SG. #fanboys

More is better in terms of bhp. You don't have to use it but when you need it, you have it.

Let's rationally work through your argument, because you aren't comparing apples to apples when you cite Forester.org's poll on owner preference. I am working based on North American prices listed on Subaru.com - your mileage may vary, but not significantly I suspect.

In the North American Market, the base Forester is a 2.5i, not a 2.0i we get here. Thus the motor outputs 170hp and 235nM torque. To refresh our memory, the Singapore 2.0i puts out 148hp and 198nM torque. In the US market, their 2.0XT puts out 250hp and 350nM torque, and our 2.0XT puts out 237hp and 350nM torque. In talking deltas in the same market, here are the rational, numbers-backed facts:

    - In Singapore, for an additional 8% outlay, you get 89hp and 152nM more.

-In the US (comparing the cheapest 2.5i and cheapest 2.0XT), the premium is 31%, for that you net 80hp and 115nM. Is it any wonder why people don't find this a fair value proposition? Take note that across the trims, the horsepower and torque ratings don't change; only the trims and options.

-Even if we take the same "Premium" trim on a 2.5i and a 2.0XT, the price delta is an 18% premium. That is an apples-to-apples comparison.

-It is only when we compare the "Touring" trim, that the price gap starts getting similar to the Singapore situation - 9%. BUT! You're still getting a 2.5 litre motor that is closer in performance to the 2.0 turbocharged motor than the asthmatic 2.0i mill that we get in the Singapore car!

As someone else said, its perfectly ok to justify your choice of purchase by saying you don't need the power or you value the fuel economy, but to suggest a poll conducted by an internet forum in another country, with a car that has a different engine, supports your line of argument? I'm only too glad to call you out on that.

Example, if referto the various owner review from sgcarmart, most arecommentingon XT but not the N.A. I can afford to pay for the XT but, can't accept the FC and the extra care need to takecare for Turbo engine. Wonder did I made the right choice to get the N.A. instead of XT

Hmmm... if one can afford or want to drive FXT, they shouldn't worry about the FC in the first place.

You crazy fxxxkers, just buy the car you like it and drive it. What's there to compare? You want to share knowledge then come and share.

Look up a classic theead in the bmw-sg forum where one egoistic low self esteem member basically requested to exchange singpass to see how many properties he have just because someone casually said he was being cheap. Do we really need to go to that extent? Are Singaporeans too obsessed with comparison and competition?

Haha... That is so funny if it is true.

    Wa. No ending to this.
    Views are subjective.
Ultimately you are the one to decide and u are the one to use it everyday.

Arguments like this will not get anywhere. It's like asking which is a better phone, samsung or apple or xiao mi or oneplus or sony or lg or google.
    There is no answer actually.

Its also like asking which stall food taste better. For a certain stall, you feel it taste like shit, but well other people dun and are still queing for it.

There is no rational. The only rational is u like it, u use it and be happy with it.

    Vezel different category from Forester.

If want to compare with a Subaru, then compare with XV.

Looks wise both nice but in Singapore only XV have AWD while Vezel is FWD.

Those who like the AWD corner and wet road hugging will prefer XV.

XV also more refined i.e. quieter.

Also, Vezel now too common. XV more unique.

I don't drive a forester but I do check this thread occasionally cos my car also have a turbo, 1.6t only. Frankly I would buy the fxt today if I have not bought anything. It's good.

Amused by this fellow forummer whom spent a really long time deciding which car to buy. Then he decided to buy a na forester. After booking one, was persuaded by forummers that the turbo one better. Tried to change his order but rejected. Then tried funny ways to justify his purchase online. Interesting read.

I think many turbo newbies like myself all go through this phase where u hearsay about moving slowly on start and then after stop, and actually tried practicing it on getting the car. Then u realize this is really not applicable on 99.99% of your drives. The remaining 0.01% includes cases like you drove for 3h at 180km/h up north, pull into a petrol station and immediately switch off. Or go tracking. And then it is probably more of historical and modern turbo these days don't need.

Then there is the debate on reliability of having a turbo. Assuming a reliable brand like most Japanese, I think it is true base on theory. Whenever a module is more complicated or have more parts or is operated under more stress it should last shorter and have more random failures. The na forester probably have a life of 20 years while the turbo one is good for 18 years. So in local context, I think most forester owners will not even drive their car till 10 years scrap. Less reliable yes, but does it matter in local context? Summary, turbo cars are reliable.

For maintenance, my own experience is that I have yet to spend more money on maintenance vs the na version. And there is no evidence that it is going to change.

Oh, just to add, I have nothing against turbo or na cars, forester or not. Just buy the car you like. Everybody is diff just as cars are diff. But if you desire the turbo one, then just get it and have no regrets like I did. The maintenance, reliability and operating stuffs are really trivial.

If coe continues to climb, with his non-guranteed option, he may not get his NA in the end. This present a good leeway to get his next car he liked. But he did mention he may just get the C4P which he rated with the lowest in term of reliability in other thread. Quite interesting.

Personally I think a forester or wrx is an enthusiasts car with its awd and (turbo) boxer engine. Forester is a true semi off roader unlike qq/vezel.

Don't buy these cars if efficiency is your concern or you just need a daily runaround car.

Having said that personally if I were to buy the forester it will be the XT in a heartbeat. If you buy a Subaru you should experience its tradition of rugged/rough high power turbo boxer engine with its full time awd.

I total agreed with your comment if there is only "take" but not required to "give." It is a no brainer for someone whom don't want extra power without the requirement to "Give."

Nevertheless, if that extra power is so important, those small or mid size car (Altis, Mazda 3, Civic etc) can close shop already. Ppls should not drive a small cc B&B car as even a N.A. 2L can't even fit to drive on the road w/o and additional extra power given. In some turbo folk content, it is less confident to drive in traffic condition [laugh]

Everyone need to choose their priority as no car is perfect for me, space and pace supersede other small issue like fuel economy. Ur examples are not relevant as I had never insisted power as the overriding factor for all factor but rather for my own case.

The feeling was good from the overall robust outlookandimmediately falling in lover aftertest ride both models.

Which eventuallyI give up the ideaof getting K3 Sport and switch to Forester.

The deciding factor for me to sign on the doted line either forNA and XT,will bemy budget to sustain the 60 months instalment.

I understanding that thecar don't below to us unless we clear the loan completely.

So to be in a comfort zone, I decided to sign on the dotted line for the NA model. [:)]

This my own though to enjoy my 10 years ride. [inlove]

    Well said.

One can argue which model is better but may fail to understand thatthe variables affecting car buying differs from person to person. To some, they place a very heavy weightage on things like maintenance, Fuel efficiency or even the sound system but to another person, these factors are non-decisive for them.

At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong.

For me, I chose XT based on these fundamental:

    - Better/similar Driving experiencecompared my old car

    - Turbocharged

    - Best value for performance in SUV category

    - Still enjoy the cabin size of the vehicle for my family

    Sound impractical? That's me!

Coming from a Turbocharged hatch and knowing the facts& myths of turbo maintenance,I don't see myselfgoing back toanNA anytime soon, and you can see that looksor FC does not hold a large weightage on my choice.

Some person argue to think with our heads when buying a car. But I believe many here think with their hearts, else they would be in the Altisthread.

I thought with my head before, and the car didn't last 3 years before I itch for another. The 2nd car which I bought with my heart is current still with me after 8 years.

I believe the FXT will be with me as long. :)

    of course?

upgrading rims interpret to increase rims weight, vehicle is sensitive to wheels weigh, in general wheel increasing 1kgequal to 10 times vehicle body weight, if you 4 wheels weight increase 5kg, interpret to 50kg vehicle body weight increased,

If your priority in upgrading rims is to reduce fuel consumption go for the smallest and lightest rim available that will still clear your brake calipers. However, rims especially branded Japanese ones can be pretty expensive and it will take you some time to recoup your investment and actually start seeing savings. But aesthetically the stock rims aren't that pretty anyway so you could probably justify that better.

U will damage AWD car differential when you do that.

Dont play play. Even improper air pressure causing tyres to end up with different loaded radius (axle to road distance at each wheel) can also cause problem sooner or later.

The differentials allow for different speed of rotation between the wheels but they are only designed for small sustained differences. Too much and the differentials will over work as nd get damaged (even burn up).

Are there are some models out there that designed to use different wheel/tyre ratios for front and rear with their 4WD systems?

Yup, BMW and Mercedes SUVs are the obvious examples. Look at the X5. It has a staggered setup. Of course, I heard that if you change your wheels you will have to reprogram the computer to know that the tyres have been changed from a staggered to non-staggered setup.

Forester can be fuel efficient too. Approximately 17.8km/L. Travelled off peak from airport to home in the west. Mine is a 2.0 i-L.

Staggered setup which can be changed by computer probably means not a permenant AWD but mainly FWD and rear only gets traction in situations when front slips.

For Subaru, it is permanent AWD so cannot change to staggered unless it comes from factory already staggered and the mechanicals (esp. the differential) already designed for that.

I believe the BMW X5 xDrive is a permanent AWD just like Subaru's.

    https://en.wikipedia...wiki/BMW_xDrive

It just intelligently splits the load front to rear and is able to vary that with a servo motor.

True that X-mode is one help of a traction control. But how often we do this in SG?

I've never used X-mode since I got my FXT!

Perhaps more relevant to those who travel frequently up north to gravel roads.

I was gathering info on boxer engine on the internet and realised that engine oil consumption is an issue, even an law suite in USA against Subaru due to this.... I read Forester around 2011 to 2014 included. Any boxer engine owner can share how much engine oil does it consume maybe over 10k km period?

If you dig further, you would have realised FB engines are the affected ones. There's the old 2.5l and 2.5l turbo.

The newer FA DIT and FA20 used by our local foresters are not affected.

I think there's much more to that lah, of course brand itself is already $$$, the comfort, sound insulation, iDrive, etc. all add up.

But seriously, Forester even the 2.0i is very very very attractively priced. If I was in the market for a budget SUV, I'd definitely buy Forester over the other "crossovers" like Qashqai (spelling?), HR-V/Vezel, etc.

I have drove many cars from Honda, VW, Mazda, Toyota.Comparing the sound insulation of Forester to these cars, Forester wins.

Didnt have chance to drive Merc, BMW or AUDI so cannot compare. But then the price range of these cars are way out of the league for comparision.

    Ya

once made your choice just move on.

I read that joker's post too, had a good laugh and brighten my Friday
