Once Upon A Time In The Game : An Intro
It?s the final match of the season, your team is 2 points ahead of your nearest rivals, and need only a draw to clinch the title. You?re up against an unmanaged side featuring lower-rated, unfit players playing out of position, and quite naturally, you?re confident that victory will be yours and the title, safe.
You log on a few hours later with a smile on your face, anticipating your team?s deserved coronation as champions, only to stare in shock at the screen, where the match report says you?ve lost the title thanks to a 0-1 defeat, courtesy a goal scored by your opponent?s worst-rated player with their only shot on goal. Sounds familiar?
After being on the receiving end of one-too-many such 'upsets', I decided it was time to give as good as I got, if not better. Indulging in those fundamental scientific principles of observation, experimentation and analysis, I believe I may have an idea to turn the tables on these teams.
Note, though, that I do not guarantee my tactics will work consistently for everyone. Also, occasional 'upsets' could still happen, and emulating the Invincibles may not be possible. I do, however, recommend that you try them out and see whether it makes any difference.

A Fistful Of Factors : What Makes The Difference?
* Formation
Unmanaged teams generally use one of 3 formations : a standard 4-4-2, a 4-5-1 and a 4-3-3. The choice is made randomly, and I have noticed no patterns in its selection (that is, teams don't use a particular formation for a specific no : of games; they may use the same formation for many games at a stretch, or they may use 3 different formations for 3 consecutive matches.) Plus, they don't alter their formations during the course of the game, leaving us one less complication to deal with.
Obviously, a 3-5-2 would be the safest counter for all 3 formations : your 3 defenders can neutralize their attackers, the 5-man midfield can get a stranglehold on possession, and your frontmen can finish them off. Right? Not necessarily, for there are other factors that determine what your fate will be, like...the venue.
* Venue
I think this is a point many people overlook, or at least under-rate. The current match engine considers home advantage to be very important, and thus what works at home doesn't always assure success in away games, as yours truly has found to his great cost.
* Tactics
These sides use default tactics, i.e. tackling, tempo & mentality all set to normal, mixed passing & attacking styles, pressing in their own half, and counter-attack, men behind ball, tight marking, offside trap, playmaker & targetman not used. As in the case of formations, these do not change during the course of a game either. Yay.
* Fitness
Last but not least is the fitness of your players; that of the CPU?s men doesn?t matter, since they miraculously seem to be able to play despite being declared ?not match-fit?. It?s just one of those weird, inexplicable things. Or maybe they take their spinach minutes before the game. Who knows?
As far as my players are concerned, I only use those who are at least 95% fit; any lower and they run the risk of getting injured.
The Standoff : Countering Your Opponent
* Choice of formation
As mentioned earlier, 3-5-2 can counter almost anything thrown at us by the computer AI, when playing at home. Away from home, ludicrous results have happened so many times, it's unreal; for example, an inferior side, using 3 men in midfield, gaining more possession than our 5 men. Better to use another formation; better safe than sorry.
I suggest a 4-4-2. I've found it to be more stable on away games. Silly goals may still be conceded, but by and large, you should be more assured going into away games with this formation.
In case the opponents have players much highly-rated than yours (for example, if you're Burnley and you're facing Barcelona ), use the 4-2-3-1 (and seek mercy from the Match Engine God ).
* Tactics
o Tackling style : Winning more tackles = more possession = (hopefully) more chances = more goals. Savvy?
Normal tackling is the default style, which is fine against teams rated equal or lower to you. Using hard tackling gives you more of the ball, but it also results in more cards and (most importantly) injuries to your players, so be selective. Reserve the hard-tackling Sam Allardyce style of football for better, higher-rated sides.
o Mentality : The correct mentality with which a team approaches a match is vital. On this game, however, things are not as they seem; the term 'defensive', despite its negative connotations (reminding you of the Greece side of Euro 2004), is actually misleading. For instance, using attacking mentality, I didn't score any more goals than I normally used to - in fact, I actually lost to a poorer side. On the contrary, I currently use a defensive mentality, and my team are league leaders in terms of goals scored.
Alternate between normal & defensive mentalities, depending on the quality of the opposition players. Go defensive if they're equally or slightly higher-rated than your team.
If it's a Burnley v Barca scenario you're facing, go very defensive.
o Attacking style : Down the flanks, through the middle and mixed are the important ones. Use whichever style plays to your strengths (if you have higher-rated wingers than CMs, and if they are better than the opposition full-backs, attack down the flanks.)
o Passing style : There are 4 different styles to choose from : short, long, direct & mixed.
+ Short passing's said to be good for the defensive game and helpful in maintaining possession, but I haven't experienced that myself.
+ Long passes are best for getting the ball to your strikers quickly, but you risk losing possession.
+ Direct passing = through-balls, I guess. Your frontmen, especially your targetman, will give you a feast of goals. As a bonus, your midfielders also chip in (in my case, 26 goals courtesy of Bastos, Gourcuff, Makoun, Melo, Tymoschuk & Sessegnon, with the last-named contributing 10.)
+ Mixed passing is a combination of all 3 styles. I consider it the next-best style to direct.
o Passing & attacking styles are not mutually exclusive; some combinations work, some don't. For example,
+ Direct passes + mixed attacking style = good combo
+ Long passes + through the middle = good combo
+ Mixed passing + down the flanks = good combo
+ Mixed passing + mixed attacking style = good combo
+ Direct passes + down the flanks = good combo (according to yokohama).
+ Direct passes + through the middle = apparently good combo (haven't tested it extensively, though)
+ Long balls + mixed attacking style (or down the flanks) = possession wasted = what's the point?
For all the 3 counter-formations I've suggested (3-5-2, 4-4-2 & 4-2-3-1), direct passing & mixed attacking styles have worked wonders for me.
o Tempo : Always play at a slow tempo when using the defensive game; it helps you be more in control. A fast tempo is suited for an attacking game.
o Pressing : Use this tactic in your own half when employing the defensive game, and all over the field when going on an all-out attack.
* Playing style
o Counter-attack : Best suited for the defensive game. It's been suggested that this option not be used when playing an attacking game.
o Men behind ball : When used, your midfielders simply converge on the opponents when they're on the ball, limiting their passing options & putting them under pressure. It helps quite a bit in stemming the flow of goals, and needless to say, is a defensive option.
o Tight marking : I suppose this is the game's version of man-marking. Use this if you have 3 defenders and your opponents have 1 or 3 forwards, or when you have 4 defenders (= 2 CBs) and the opposition has 2 forwards. Then again, you can't predict what formation the CPU will use for that particular match, so it's a bit of a puzzle to try & figure out what to use.
o Off-side trap : Simple one. Use only if your defenders are higher-rated than the opponent's forwards.
o Playmaker : I don't use it myself, except when employing a 3-4-1-2 (which I do if I'm losing). If you do use it, make sure your playmaker coincides with your style of attack. That is, if using Fabregas as your playmaker, make sure your attacking style is set to 'through the middle'.
o Targetman : I use this all the time. Deploy your CF (or your highest-rated forward, if you don't use a CF) as the targetman, and watch him rip the CPU defence apart. For example, my Cavenaghi had 8 goals and 5 assists in 9 starts this season (before I sold him).

Therefore, to summarize, these are the formations & tactics I suggest you try against unmanaged teams :
At home : 3-5-2
Away : 4-4-2
In either case, use :
* Tackling style : Normal (against lower-rated sides) / Hard (against similar or higher-rated sides)
* Mentality : Normal (against lower-rated sides) / Defensive (against similar or slightly higher-rated sides)
* Attacking style : Mixed / Down the flanks / Through the middle (depending on your strengths and your opponent's weaknesses)
* Passing style : Direct (if using mixed or through the middle attacking style) / Mixed (suitable for all styles)
* Tempo : Normal (for a normal, i.e. neutral game) / Slow (for a defensive game) / Fast (for an attacking game)
* Pressing : Own half (for normal / slow tempo) / All over (for attacking / very attacking mentality)
* Counter-attack : Yes (For normal / defensive game)
* Men behind ball : Yes (For normal / defensive game)
* Tight marking : Yes (you can also decide not to use this)
* Play offside : Yes (against lower-rated strikers) / No (against similar / higher-rated strikers)
* Use playmaker : No (use this if you have a player with a rating significantly higher than those of his teammates, and make him the playmaker)
* Use targetman : Yes (your CF / highest-rated forward)
* During the game, if you're losing in the 60th minute, change your formation to a 3-4-1-2 with hard tackling, attacking mentality, through the middle, direct passing, fast tempo, pressing all over, and use a playmaker (your AM, the '1' in the 3-4-1-2). I believe it's better not to use a targetman in this case.
* If losing in the 75th minute, use the above-mentioned tactics, and in addition, also change the mentality to very attacking, and play the offside trap (to get your defenders to go further forward).
* When up against a much higher-rated side, start with a 4-2-3-1 and a very defensive mentality, mixed attacking style, and with the rest of the tactics as suggested for a defensive 3-5-2 / 4-4-2. Change to an attacking style with the same formation when losing in the 60th minute, and if still losing 15 minutes later, change to a very attacking 3-4-1-2 and throw everything at them including the kitchen sink, for you have nothing to lose.

Firstly...Congratulations to our MCF Champion!!! Yeah!!! Job very well done. This has been by far the most exciting season i've played in SM. Roma ended the season with a bang as well. Hopefully we'll be back next season
