    Hiring expectations dip in Singapore
    Posted: 19 October 2011 1456 hrs

SINGAPORE: A report by recruiting firm, Hudson, said the uncertain global environment is impacting hiring expectations.

Its latest Hudson Report, said 42 per cent of respondents across all sectors forecast headcount growth in quarter four (Q4), compared with 56 per cent in quarter three.

At six per cent, the proportion of respondents forecasting staff cuts is almost unchanged from the previous quarter's of five per cent.

But most respondents are still optimistic about their company's performance even though hiring expectations are falling this quarter.

Across all sectors, 77 per cent expect that performance will be excellent or good in the next six months and just two percent think it will be poor.

Overall confidence is lower than in Q4 2010, when 87 per cent forecast excellent or good performance, but these figures suggest that most companies still have a very positive outlook.

Employers reported challenges in managing Gen Y employees - those aged 30 and under.

The top two issues were unrealistic job expectations and impatience.

Employers, however, acknowledged that Gen Y employees are a key part of the workforce.

And they're introducing a wide range of initiatives designed to make the workplace attractive to this cohort.

Three such initiatives are encouraging staff members' own initiative and independent thinking, flexible timing and work-life balance, and mentorship or coaching programmes.

As well as making the workplace more attractive to their Gen Y staff, employers are taking a variety of approaches to develop the talents of this cohort.

The approaches most widely used in Singapore are focused on broadening the experience of Gen Y staffers and preparing them for more responsible positions in the company.

Engine failure forces Cathay flight to turn around
    Posted: 19 October 2011 1138 hrs
    Cathay Pacific

HONG KONG: Engine failure forced a Rome-bound Cathay Pacific flight to return to Hong Kong shortly after it took off from the southern Chinese territory on Wednesday, an airline spokesman said.

The Airbus A340, carrying 296 passengers and crew, experienced problems in its third engine about an hour into the flight, forcing the pilots to shut it down, airline spokesman Thomas Lau told AFP.

The plane, flight CX293, landed safely at 2:49 am (1849 GMT Tuesday) almost three hours after it set off. There were no injuries.

All but 11 of the passengers then boarded a replacement plane.

Cathay said it was investigating the incident.

Brakes slammed on more 'pimped up' cars
Summonses for illegal modifications double in first 6 months

Offenders who illegally modify their cars are often nabbed through spot checks and routine inspections. -- ST FILE PHOTO
    By Christopher Tan, Senior Correspondent

More than a dozen motorists a day are pulled up for infringements like modified exhausts, overly tinted windows and various lighting offences.

In the first half of the year, Land Transport Authority (LTA) enforcement officers issued 2,512 summonses - almost double the 1,337 in the corresponding period last year .

The 2,512 figure matches the full-year haul of last year (2,645) and 2009 (2,510) and surpasses the 1,746 in 2008.

The LTA keeps a relatively tight rein on what changes can be made to a car because of safety issues.

Taiwanese woman finds out she has testicles

    Published on Oct 20, 2011

(THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Sin Chew Daily reported that a Taiwanese woman was shocked when a gynaecologist told her that she had testicles.

The woman, 34, decided to consult a specialist after experiencing pain in her genital area.

It was her first time seeking treatment from a gynaecologist although she had never experienced menstruation in her life.

The check-up also showed that the woman did not have a uterus. When asked why she had not sought treatment or medical advice about her menstrual problem, the woman was lost for an answer.

Manila: Filipinas can't be hired as maids

    Published on Oct 20, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The Philippine Embassy here prefers the hiring of skilled and semi-skilled Filipino workers in Malaysia, rather than as domestic workers.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the embassy said the Philippines and the host government authorities were in a better position to ensure the rights and welfare of skilled and semi-skilled workers who worked mostly in offices and factories, than those who worked in homes.

It said this was its reaction to a local employment agency which had stated that employers should be prepared to source domestic workers from the Philippines.

The Philippines has set strict requirements in the hiring of domestic workers, including a minimum monthly salary of US$400 (S$506).

If your car is banged by a drunk driver, young chap in a cheap car, in a remote place and the damage is quite considerable. It is apprent that he should have given way to you. Would you:

    A) Call police, catch him red-handed but risk not being able to claim his insurance because he is drunk then will have to sue him in a private capacity with low chance of getting your $$ back

    B) Pretend it is a normal accident, collect the necessary evidence i.e photos & statement and claim his insurance as per normal?

If your car is banged by a drunk driver, young chap in a cheap car, in a remote place and the damage is quite considerable. It is apprent that he should have given way to you. Would you:

    A) Call police, catch him red-handed but risk not being able to claim his insurance because he is drunk then will have to sue him in a private capacity with low chance of getting your $$ back

    B) Pretend it is a normal accident, collect the necessary evidence i.e photos & statement and claim his insurance as per normal?

    Any other course of action?

    C) Since his so stone drunk, whack the fark out of him, leaving him for half dead, since you can't claim, which is 99% of the case, him being drunk, push his car over and set it on fire. Remember to ALWAYS take photos for evidence.

you tell me which one better deal?

you decide. $400.00 is the lowest deal running in the market for used Galaxy Tab at the moment.
if you ask me, i rather take $130.00 from Challenger as looking from it. its getting harder to buy anything from challenger now a day. their products are now too commercial and not really cheap anymore.

gone are the day where i can find something that is not commonly found in shopping center IT shop. so their discount coupon might no longer be consider good enough

Ok, yeah true, I'm also considering shifting my purchases from them, seeing the way they treat customers in liue of this reward thing, where they keep cutting down the rewards and giving off cheap crap to the customers, lets say for 3000 points to change one stupid farking MP3 player? Get a fuarking life man, if I need to spend $3000 to get a FREE mp3, might as well, I BUY it off for less then a 100 bucks, right not?

Used to just walk in "7 desktops, this specs. deliver" service good, now it sucks, when call for help, the guy who served you will just say, "oh..I donno leh" and I'm behind the phone in my mind saying "knnbccb, know how to sell, donno how to help when got h/w problem and just 1 day after delivery, nbcb!!"
