Malcolm Sng, the 22-year-old student who collapsed and died after completing a 21.1km half-marathon on Sunday, was regarded by his friends as a 'man of steel'.
His basic military training (BMT) platoon mate Daniel Koh, now an army regular, said: 'If anything gave him a reason to not perform, he would try everything he could to overcome it.
'He was the sort who would lead by example, just keep quiet and do his thing.'
Mr Koh, also 22, was speaking to The Straits Times ahead of Mr Sng's wake, which is being held near the Sengkang flat where he lived with his parents Daniel and Rena, as well as sisters Samantha and Victoria.

Unable to return the sum of money within the 10 days' loan period, he returned to Singapore after applying for a Document of Identity (DOI) from the Consulate-General in the city of Ho Chi Minh. He claimed to have dropped his passport in Vietnam.
When Fong returned to Singapore, he tried to apply for a new passport at the ICA, this time, he claimed that his passport had been stolen by a motorbike rider.
ICA found inconsistency in his claims and carried out an investigation. He was charged on June 17, 2011 and sentenced to jail for misuing his passport on November 30, 2011
