Famous Penang Char Kway Teow seller, Madam Soon Suan Choo, still draws Singaporeans and Malaysians to her stall despite a boycott against her service and high pricing.

Togged up in her signature attire - a ridiculously droopy red cap and an apron, Madam Soon Suan Choo is probably the most famous and controversial Char Kway Teow seller in Penang, if not the whole of Malaysia.
The 64-year-old is also well-known for whipping up the meanest plate of the fried noodles on the island. There are Penangites who proclaim hers as the best, while there are those who hate her like poison.
There were reports of bricks being hurled at her stall or her wok being kicked by angry customers who found her and sister downright rude or arrogant.
Yes, they really hate her.
A Facebook boycott campaign, which started last year, is still going on. But it seems to be a flop, judging by the large numbers of tourists from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur who pack Kafe Heng Huat coffeeshop every weekend.
At peak hours, the wait could be as horrendously long as an hour. But I was lucky last Saturday late afternoon - my wait was only half an hour.
I had plonked myself at the table nearest to her stall, which was located in front of the coffeeshop, whose narrow interior was filled with Singaporeans and Malaysians.
Her friendly younger assistant, who took orders, was very curious about me and where I came from. I told her I had come all the way from Singapore to try their famous Char Kway Teow.
Maybe that helped transfer me to the priority queue.
Madam Soon was thrust into fame in Malaysia last year for the wrong reason.
The Star newspaper reported that a boycott campaign was launched in cyberspace against her for allegedly berating an elderly woman for commenting that her food was too expensive.
However, Madam Soon countered by saying it was a mischievious act from a dissatisfied customer.
A caricature of the hawker telling the old woman that "people like you can?t afford" was widely circulated via email.
But Madam Soon claimed the person who uttered the words was her sister.
"My sister only said that the old woman can choose not to eat if she thinks the food is expensive. She meant no harm," she said.
Madam Soon said the person who launched the campaign was trying to find fault with her and her sister.
"He can do whatever he likes. The caricature has not affected my business at all," the feisty woman told The Star.
Madam Soon, who has been selling char koay teow for 42 years, added: "Sometimes it is very hard to please all customers, especially when we are busy."
Said one dissastied customer on the Net: "She is too arrogant and have insulted Penangites! Her Char Keow Teow does not deserve the praise. There are many cheaper but just as tasty ones in Penang."
Agreeing, another Penangite said: "Only tourists who never eat Char Kway Teow before in their life will visit his stall. Normally locals avoid this stall at all costs...overpriced...arrogant seller. In Penang you can easily get better CKT at lower price and better service."
But some Penangites have declared her Char Kway Teow as No. 1 on the island today.
The old Chinese cab-driver, who took me to Kafe Heng Huat coffeeshop, said Madam Soon's version was the very best among the famous stalls.
He said: "One other famous one, the 'Sisters' Char Kway Teow' in MacAlister Road is no longer as good."
And just recently, former Penangite, Mr Philip Lee, a retired famous journalist from The Straits Times, also singled her out as the best Char Kway Teow hawker among the most-talked about ones.
Mr Lee wrote in the newpaper two months ago: "I tried all three and found the one in Lorong Selamat, housed in Kafe Heng Huat, to be the best, followed hotly by Ah Leng Char Koay Teow in Khoon Hiang Cafe at the junction of Dato Keramat Road and Dunlop Road. The third, run by two elderly sisters at a corner shop at the end of MacAlister Road, was not as good as it used to be."
How did I find Madam Soon's Char Kway Teow? Here's my verdict:
Taste: Excellent. Deliciously savoury with lots of robust flavours from the hot wok, hot chilli, lard, chives and egg. The seasoning was spot-on. It definitely had the wow factor.
Cooking skill: Very good. Madam Soon was very focused on her frying and patient to ensure that the noodles were well fried before serving them. They were springy and every strand was coated with flavour. The beansprouts were cooked but still crispy.
Quality of ingredients/Value for money: Not great. The three prawns in my 7.50 ringgit version didn't taste naturally sweet. They were like the type which firmed up after being soaked in soda, a popular practice at Chinese eateries.
There were only two miserable cockles, which were not plump though fresh. The amount of noodles was about the same for the $1.50 fried plain noodles that you get in Singapore.
There were two thin slices of Chinese sausage in it. And they were the worst I've had. Poor quality and tasted rancid.
Service: Her younger assistant was very friendly towards me. I didn't tell her my occupation. Madam Soon managed only a half smile when I snapped a picture of her. She didn't even bother to look at or say thank-you to customers leaving the coffeeshop.
She was truly absorbed in her frying. Toiling from 11am to 5.30pm without a proper break, she seemed bent on making big bucks.
Pricing: Her prices of 7, 7.50 and 9.50 ringgit are probably the most expensive in Penang.
Said one Penangite: "Some people said she needs the money. Her husband had died and she's a heavy gambler. She likes going to Genting. That's her folly. But I must say her Char Kway Teow is really good."
That's gossip. And I had no time to find out the truth - I had to rush back to my ship.
Anyway, here are two things to note if you decide to hunt down the stall.
First, the environment and hygiene need improvement. Used plates and chopsticks were dumped in plastic basins and left on the street. They were also washed there.
Second, you might get confused by another Char Kway Teow stall positioned right in front of Madam Soon's stall. Actually it also belongs to her but another assistant does the frying when she is not around. She also helps her by cooking the prawns first or replenishing ingredients like cockles and Chinese sausage.
The assistant's cooking is not as good as Madam Soon's, said Penangites.
Since she has so many fans here, she should seriously consider setting up shop in Singapore.
We can offer her a cleaner environment and better food sources. And I don't think many Singaporeans would complain about paying S$4 or S$5 for a plate of good Char Kway Teow. And we don't need expensive prawns - just give us more cockles.
And Madam Soon, we have two magnificent and brand-new casinos which you will easily fall in love with.
