Singapore to use trained hawks scaring off nuisance birds from shopping street
SINGAPORE, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's shopping street Orchard Road is thinking of using trained hawks to scare off smaller birds that have been a nuisance to the retailers and shoppers, local daily Straits Times reported on Wednesday.
The birds have been a nuisance since 2008 when a car park was redeveloped and trees at the site removed. They used to roost there but have moved to the area near shopping malls on the Orchard Road. Some malls tried to project high-pitched sounds as a scare tactic a few weeks ago but it did not work.
The Orchard Road Business Association, which is made up of 60 businesses in the shopping district, is working with Wildlife Reserves Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board on the idea of using trained hawks to frighten off birds such as mynahs and starlings.
Yong Ding Li, chairman of the South-east Asian Biodiversity Society, said there are an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 birds roosting in the Orchard Road area at dusk. People have complained about the noise the birds make and the droppings they leave on cars, pedestrian walkways and even shoppers' heads.
Bird training and the acclimatization of hawks to urban areas is under way. The plan is to release the hawks in the area for short periods of time to chase away the birds before they go back to their handlers.
"The idea is to scare the birds away. At the end of the day, we want the pleasant shopping experience to return to the Orchard Road," said Steven Goh, executive director of the Orchard Road Business Association.

Netizens are commenting about a photo of crowds thronging the Circle Line platform at Bishan MRT station.
The photo, together with a similar one published in today's edition of The Straits Times, was taken during the evening peak hours yesterday on 11 October.
Commenting on these photos, netizens were shocked and dismayed with the overcrowding in our public transport system.
Two netizens even compared the "scary" crowds to "Chinatown during the Chinese New Year period", and the crowds that turn up for computer fairs, which take place once every three months in Singapore.

Obedient Wives Club launches "explicit sex book"

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia - The controversial Obedient Wives Club (OWC) has set off another round of public outrage with an "explicit sex book" which encourages a Muslim husband to have joint sex with all his wives.
The 115-page book titled Seks Islam, Perangi Yahudi untuk Kembalikan Seks Islam kepada Dunia (Islamic Sex, fighting Jews to return Islamic sex to the world), has a picture of the late Asaari Muhammad, the banned Al-Arqam leader, on the cover.
An excerpt from a passage printed on the back encouraged Muslims husbands to have sex simultaneously with their wives.
The book stated that research showed women only gave their husbands 10 per cent of what they wanted from their wives' bodies, a local daily reported yesterday.
According to the report, chapter eight titled Bagaimana seks menjadi ibadah (How sex becomes worship), contained explicit descriptions of sexual acts.
Facebook page "We do not want sexist nonsense from Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd" founder Matthew Ong expressed outrage over the book and urged Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil to intervene.
Global Ikhwan had set up the OWC.

Man's privates ripped off in grass-cutting accident

MARANG - The private part of a factory worker was ripped off after his trousers got entangled in the blades of a grass-cutting buggy outside a food processing plant.
The agonising screams of the 27-year-old man, said to be suffer??-i???ng from mental disability, drew several workers and his employer to his aid.
He was flung about five metres from the machine due to the impact of the blades. He also suffered injuries to his legs and body.
The incident occurred at the fac?tory's compound in Pulau Kereng???- ga near here at 12.15pm on Tues?day.
The victim, whose name has been withheld, was rushed to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for immediate surgery. Doctors were able to re-attach the severed penis.
The grass-cutting buggy was being driven by another worker when the victim tried to climb over it from the rear.
The edge of his trousers got caught in the blades, parts of which protruded from below the machine, causing him to lose balance.
His employer Mohd Amir Hafiz Zainudin said the driver of the machine only realised the mishap when he heard the victim yelling for help.
The victim's mother, who declined to be named, said while the doctors were able to re-attach her son's penis, they were not sure whether it could function normally again.
"We are still waiting for his recovery," she said, adding that the family was considering legal action against the company over the incident.

Women on Pill pick a dud in bed but a dude in the home
PARIS- Women who take the Pill tend to choose as partners men who are less attractive and worse in bed but a sounder bet for a long-term relationship, according to an unusual study published on Tuesday.
Probing the effect of contraceptive hormones on mating choice, researchers questioned 2,519 women in the United States, Czech Republic, Britain and Canada who had had at least one child.
The volunteers were asked to rate their relationship for general satisfaction and sexual pleasure and the attractiveness of their partner or, retrospectively, of their ex.
Oral contraception had been used by 1,005 women when they met their partner, while 1,514 had used no form of hormonal birth control at the first encounter.
"Our results show some positive and negative consequences of using the Pill when a woman meets her partner," said Craig Roberts of Stirling University, Scotland, who led the investigation.
"Such women may, on average, be less satisfied with the sexual aspects of their relationship but more so with non-sexual aspects. Overall, women who met their partner on the Pill had longer relationships - by two years on average - and were less likely to separate."
Roberts suspects the Pill skews the sub-conscious "chemistry" by which a woman makes a mating choice.
Previously, he found that using oral contraceptives altered women's preferences for men's body odour.
When they didn't take the Pill, women were subjected to the strong hormonal swings of the menstrual cycle.
During ovulation, they unwittingly preferred the smell of men who were genetically dissimilar.
The evolutionary explanation for this is that babies that are born from genetically dissimilar couples tend to be healthier and have a better chance of survival.
But when women took the Pill, they preferred the smell of genetically similar men, Roberts found in this earlier research.
This was because the normal hormonal swings of the menstrual cycle evened out under the effect of the contraception.
The hormone levels typically reflected the non-fertile phase of the menstrual cycle, when women "are more attracted to men who appear more caring and reliable - good dads," said Roberts.
Although such men are a better choice for long-term partnerships, the risk of a relationship breakdown is still there.
"Women who used oral contraception when they met their partner tended to find him less attractive, engaged in compliant sex and rejected sexual advances more frequently as the relationship progressed, and were more likely to initiate separation if it occurred," the study notes bleakly.
The new research gives an important statistical push to the theory of sexual chemistry but also raises a dilemma.
Should a woman go for Mr. Hunk or Mr. Nice?
To women who are mistrustful of what their body is telling them, going off the Pill and using a condom could help provide the answer, suggests Roberts.
"Choosing a non-hormonal barrier method of contraception for a few months before getting married might be one way for a woman to check or reassure herself that she's still attracted to her partner," he says.
The volunteers for the study were recruited through personal contact, social networking sites and advertising on pregnancy and parenthood forum websites. Of the 2,519 women, 1,761 women were still in a relationship with the biological father of their first child.

SINGAPORE: A coroner's inquest into the death of a Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) senior technician after an induction exercise left questions hanging.
State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid said he needed further clarification on the cause of the death of 36-year-old Second Warrant Officer (2WO) Poh Eng Ann on 24 April, 2009.
He called for video or pictorial documentation of the activity.
2WO Poh, a father-of-two, was at an informal annual event to celebrate his recent promotion along with other officers at the Paya Lebar Air Base.
At the ceremony, he took part in a non-compulsory activity called the "tunnel crawl" where he had to crawl inside the engine of an aircraft.
Investigating Officer Johnny Tan told the court on Wednesday that this was part of a "military tradition" and was not considered a high-risk activity.
The court also heard that there was no time limit in the game.
2WO Poh, who was of medium-built, did not complain of any discomfort before and after the crawl.
He was observed to have performed it without difficulty.
However, he was found unconscious later that evening in a flight crew room.
He was attended to by the air base's medical team which tried to resuscitate him and continued doing so on the way to the Changi General Hospital.
2WO Poh, who had been with RSAF for 15 years, was pronounced dead at 7.24pm in hospital.
A Health Sciences Authority (HSA) autopsy report revealed that he had a pre-existing condition, whereby his liver was grossly enlarged by about 1.5 times its normal size due to fatty deposits.
Dr Wee Keng Poh, a consultant forensic pathologist of HSA, told the court that this made his liver softer than normal and more susceptible to rupture as a result of physical trauma.
Given 2WO Poh's stature, who was 1.74 metres tall and weighed 84 kilogrammes, his liver may have ruptured due to the tight space that he had to squeeze through.
2WO Poh's widow, Eileen Chua Li Eng, who was in court on Wednesday, asked about the lack of documentation of the event. The 35-year-old primary school teacher also wanted to know why the event had not been timed.
Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, she said her husband died about two weeks after his 39th birthday.
She said the loss had been a huge blow to their four-year-old son and two-year-old daughter.
She added that she was hoping to seek closure and will attend the next hearing on October 21.
Responding to media queries, the Ministry of Defence said it would not be appropriate for it to comment on the details of the incident as investigations are ongoing.

The victim, whose name has been withheld, was rushed to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for immediate surgery. Doctors were able to re-attach the severed penis.
The grass-cutting buggy was being driven by another worker when the victim tried to climb over it from the rear.
The edge of his trousers got caught in the blades, parts of which protruded from below the machine, causing him to lose balance.
His employer Mohd Amir Hafiz Zainudin said the driver of the machine only realised the mishap when he heard the victim yelling for help.
The victim's mother, who declined to be named, said while the doctors were able to re-attach her son's penis, they were not sure whether it could function normally again.
"We are still waiting for his recovery," she said, adding that the family was considering legal action against the company over the incident.
