Mans hand stuck in toilet drainage trap for 9 hoursPUBLISHED ON MAY 10, 2015Singapore Civil Defence Force personnel wheeling the man out of his Jurong West Street flat after his right hand was stuck in the drainage trap of his master bedroom toilet on Sunday afternoon. -- PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO BY PEARL LEEThe Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) rescued a man whose right hand was stuck in the drainage trap of the toilet in his master bedroom on Sunday. The man, who lives with his wife and daughter in a Housing Board flat in Jurong West Street 52, was alone when the incident happened. It is believed that the incident occurred at about 1pm.A neighbour on the same floor, who wanted to be known only as Madam Chang, said in Mandarin that the man's wife and daughter got home at about 4pm."They only realised that something had happened when they got home," said Madam Chang, a housewife. "The wife came running to my house screaming, asking to borrow an electric driller."She added that the man's wife had told her that the man was taking a shower when a ring he was wearing slipped into the toilet's drainage trap.According to Madam Chang, the man's hand had got stuck when he was trying to retrieve the ring.SCDF arrived at the scene at about 6pm, and took four hours to release the man's hand.A spokesman for SCDF said the operation involved them having to carefully cut the drainage piping, and drill the toilet floor from the man's unit and the one directly below, to free the trapped hand.During the operation, SCDF officers supplied oxygen to the man, who was conscious and stable. He was taken to the National University Hospital at about 10pm, and was accompanied by his wife. His daughter declined to speak to the media, requesting for privacy.Mr Kalpesh Panchal, 34, who lives in the unit directly below, said SCDF officers came to his house at about 7pm.They wanted to cut the ceiling in the toilet of the master bedroom to free the victim's hand."They informed me that someone's hand was stuck and they needed to knock off the ceiling," said Mr Kalpesh. He added that he could see the victim's hand and fingers from below as SCDF officers carried out their work. They stayed at Mr Kalpesh's house for more than an hour."His hand was very fat and swollen," said Mr Kalpesh, who had sent his son and wife to a friend's home for the time being. When The Straits Times visited Mr Kalpesh's home, the floor was dusty and there was a hole in his toilet's ceiling.Officers from the Housing Development Board were also at the scene.Mr Kalpesh added: "I need to clean up now. It's a mess, but it's a minor thing. Most important is that the man is safe."

Blood donor jailed 15 weeks and fined $10,000 for false declarationPUBLISHED ON MAY 11, 2015BY ELENA CHONGSINGAPORE - An undergraduate who falsely declared that he had not had sex with another male when donating blood was jailed for 15 weeks and fined $10,000 on Monday. The 23-year-old had pleaded guilty to the offence at Bloodbank Ghaut, Health Sciences Authority, at Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, on Dec 19, 2012.He cannot be named due to a gag order.Investigation showed that the defendant had declared that he had not "had sex with another male" when he in fact had been having a regular sexual relationship with a male partner since 2010. He also had sex with a male stranger sometime in December 2011 after a few drinks. The blood he donated was found to be infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus or commonly known as HIV.His lawyer Christine Sekhon had asked the court to consider a short detention order (SDO) for the young offender to minimise the stigma and disruption to his studies. But Deputy Public Prosecutor Joshua Lim said the SDO was entirely inappropriate in cases of this nature where the principles of general deterrence must apply because of issues of public health and safety. He reiterated that the prosecution accepts the defendant's explanation that he donated blood only because he was asked at short notice by his two other friends to join them to donate blood. The sentence of jail and fine sought by the prosecution, he said, should not be seen as the prosecution taking a more charitable approach to such offences. Indeed, if an accused person uses the blood donation procedure for cynical purposes such as blood testing, the prosecution will seek a significantly higher sentence. To ensure that patients' lifelines are not compromised or jeopardised, he said the court must send the unequivocal, unmistakable and unambiguous message that the law does not, cannot, and will not be lenient with a person who is economical with the truth during blood donation, and who, in doing so, puts the nation's valuable blood supply at risk.District Judge Lim Keng Yeow said it is patently obvious that it is irresponsible and reprehensible to lie concerning the questions posed to potential donors."Innocent persons who have to depend on donated blood should never be put in danger by what is administered to them. They and their families should never even be put in fear that the blood they receive could cause them grave harm rather than do them good," he said. The maximum penalty for the offence is a $20,000 fine and two years' jail.

How is donating HIV contaminated blood a good deed? If you know that you are significantly at risk then do the worlda favour and not donate blood...

Please note that if the HIV test gave a false negative result, some innocent person could have been infected.

SON: Daddy, may I ask you a question?
DAD: Yeah sure, what is it?
SON: Daddy, how much do you make an hour?
DAD: Thats none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?
SON: I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?
DAD: If you must know, I make $100 an hour.
SON: Oh! (With his head down).
SON: Daddy, may I please borrow $50?
The father was furious.
DAD: If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this childish behavior.
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.
The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boys questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?
After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $ 50 and he really didnt ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boys room and opened the door.
DAD: Are you asleep, son?
SON: No daddy, Im awake.
DAD: Ive been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier. Its been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Heres the $50 you asked for.
The little boy sat straight up, smiling.
SON: Oh, thank you daddy!
Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.
DAD: Why do you want more money if you already have some?
SON: Because I didnt have enough, but now I do.
Daddy, I have $100 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.
The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.
Its just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life.
We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us,
those close to our hearts.
Do remember to share that $100 worth of your time with someone you love?
If we die tomorrow,
the company that we are working for
could easily replace us in a matter of days.
But the family and friends we leave behind
will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.
And come to think of it,
we pour ourselves more into work than to our family.
Something to think about.

Korean hostess declared brain dead after 18 drinks at Chinatown pubWednesday, May 13, 2015AsiaOneSINGAPORE - A young bar hostess has been declared brain dead after downing 18 glasses of hard liquor to earn a tip of $900, reported Shin Min Daily.According to the Chinese daily, the victim was a beautiful Korean woman working at an exclusive Chinatown KTV bar. She was said to be in her twenties.During the drinking session, she downed a large amount of hard liquor before collapsing. Colleagues who found her said her skin felt cold, and an ambulance was called to the scene.Shin Min reported that earlier in that evening, a local and well-to-do customer had brought some friends to the Chinatown spot for drinks. He had booked a room and asked for a few bar hostesses to join them. The client reportedly told the hostesses that he would give each person $50 for every drink consumed, and that there was no limit to the number of glasses they could drink. To get the money, some of the hostesses took up the challenge and started to down drinks heavily.Soon, the women started to feel discomfort and rushed to the toilets to throw up, Shin Min said.An eye witness told the paper that he saw one of the women vomiting and went to check on her. After finding out what happened, he heard a scream come from the next room.Upon investigating, the Korean bar hostess was seen unconscious and could not be revived. Her body was described to be "very cold".Paramedics arrived at 1.30am and she was rushed to hospital where doctors managed to save her life. Unfortunately, she was declared brain dead, said the Chinese daily. She is currently still under observation in the Intensive Care Unit.

I also hate it when cyclists keep ringing their bells on the pedestrian paths. I'll not give way to them and tell them that if they want to cycle fast, they should be on the roads. Infact, they aren't even allowed there at all. Even slow cyclists are required to be on the road by law.

CNA news: Man arrested at Bishan Junction 8 for allegedly hurting public servant

SINGAPORE: A man was arrested at the Junction 8 mall in Bishan on Monday night (Jun 8) for suspected involvement in a case of voluntarily causing hurt against a public servant, said the Singapore Police Force.

Passerby Siti Saad, who sent us photos of the incident, said she had been on her way home at about 9.30pm when she saw a man pinned to the ground by two police men. "The police were trying to calm the man down and to reason with him. However, the man was not cooperating at all and he would violently struggle to break free each time the policemen lessened their grip on him," she told Channel NewsAsia.

Ms Siti said some bystanders tried to offer help but police and Junction 8 security officers told people to stand back.

Traces of blood were seen on the ground. "The man was bleeding from his mouth or nose, probably due to the struggle," Ms Siti said.

Police said that they received a call for assistance at 9.36pm, and Ms Siti said an ambulance arrived on the scene at about 9.45pm.

Spurned husband jailed 10 months for stabbing wife in front of two young sonsPUBLISHED ON JUN 11, 2015BY ANDREA NGSINGAPORE - A removal man who stabbed his estranged wife in front of their two young sons was jailed for 10 months on Thursday.Suresh David Narasimmalu, 29, had been on a Deepavali shopping and dinner trip with Ms Vasentha Kumari, 30, and their boys aged five and seven when the pair began arguing as they walked along Race Course Road in Little India. He pulled out a Swiss army knife from his sling bag and stabbed her in the abdomen before fleeing in a taxi on Oct 18 last year.Ms Kumari, who was left bleeding in front of her sons, called the police and needed emergency surgery. She spent six days in hospital.Narasimmalu was arrested several hours later at the void deck of his brother's home. The court heard that the couple were in the middle of a divorce.Deputy Public Prosecutor Carene Poh said Narasimmalu's knife attack was "not only vicious but gratuitous".In mitigation, Narasimmalu's defence lawyer said his client's actions were not premeditated but provoked by his wife - who had left him for a boyfriend. He added that Narasimmalu had been "under enormous stress from the failed marriage, not being able to see his children daily and from the betrayal of the victim".The defence lawyer also explained that Narasimmalu was carrying the knife as a work tool. For voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous means, Narasimmalu could have been jailed for up to seven years, fined and caned.
