Asking a colleague in Korea and they suggested Honeywell Black box.

Can the experts here look at this and comment how it compares with the local market products?

It seems on the high end side and carries a well known company name (Honeywell) - and interestingly manufactured in Korea.
Appeals to me for the design and hopefully much more reliable.

Am looking at the one with GPS. Still looking for english description!.

dun understand y wan GPS, unless u can be sure u will never exceed speed limit and/or able to delete all records in case of any accident in which u had been speeding (which is unlikely if u got knocked out).

I don't quite understand the GPS implication in the context mentioned...(does it record speed as part of the capacility? I'll do some more reading).

I guess on the lighter side of things, it could help match location and video when we drive up Malaysia on holidays.

There is the other model that is w/o GPS - but kinda like the 'holiday' use-case.

    speed = distance / time

so as long as GPS co-ordinates are time-stamped, speed is trivial to derive,
    even if not explicitly recorded.

This photograph reminded me of the recent fatal crashing of the wayward bus onto the tyre-punctured car and the tow truck which killed the tow truck driver and maimed the car driver's brother.

This lane is not for overtaking but many treated it that way....

720P at 150? Wide angle. I find its ok for day but night need to use VLC or your player to up the brightness. Audio cannot mute. Has looping feature.

Have not tested motion sensor yet as I am not tapped into car batt. Uses MicroSD though. Class6 above quite hard to find...

I bought the vision drive vd7000 with front and rear cameras and I must say that I'm regretting my decision. The rear camera is still okay and I can see the car plate number of the cars behind me. But so far the footage from the front really suck big time. I can hardly see the car plates in the videos, even though I'm half a car length or less away from the car in front. The 'Best' part was when I can't even see the license plate of the car that was parked boot to bonnet in front of me! The distance between my car and the cars in front seem to be distorted, and made longer than the actual distance. E.g. 1 car length looks like 2 or more car lengths.

The screen doesn't really help cos I find it too small to view anything, and it's put at such an awkward angle. It's only useful when you first set up the camera. Overall clarity is definitely not high definition. I guess I should have bought a separate front and rear camera instead of getting the vd7000 for convenience. What a waste of money!

Anyone with vd7000 and having similar problems?

Try twisting the mounting piece, otherwise use a thin n strong plastic ruler to push the tape off.

I have a special tool which I got it when I was working for seagate in 1994 peeling off stickers from harddisk. Its a plastic stick with one end flat and another end pointed.

The recorded file size depends on the mode it is switched to.
Eg under HD mode, each 1 min clip will be around 95 mb, VGA will be around 30mb.
Hope i have cleared your doubt.

How does the motion detection mode works if there is constant motion like driving on the road?

I have two car cameras with motion sensor option but both works differently. One, in motion sensor mode, it would start recording and file in 1min file size if there is no further motion detected. If there is motion still detected like driving ard, it would continue to record until there is no motion detected, therefore the file size will be the total duration instead of one 1min file.

The other one, in motion sensor mode, it would only record in 1min file size. Even if there are still motion, it would still file 1min file size until motion has stopped. Therefore u get multiple files of 1min file size. The problem with this method is if ur SD card speed is not high enough, u will see lag between files.

So which system is this camera using???

No problem. Thatz why I prefer to do my research b4 buying in SG. I have been buying from China, HK and Taiwan online shops for quite some time already so I know the prices for car camera in SG is always more expensive than them.

Since mid of last yr, they are already having various HD car camera in the market but in SG, the vendors still pushing for non-HD car cameras..........aka to clearing stock but not lowering their prices.

I believe the prices shown in Aliexpress are not the lowest. Try going to China chinese websites like Tabao, the prices drop even further. So why buy China products in SG at an inflated price??? Cut the middleman and get it ourselves.

As for warranty, so far all vendors I dealt with do honor their warranty and willing to resolve them soonest. I am dealing with China Shipyard for warranty for the eight new vessels that we built there. They need a little pushing to work but the vendors definately honor their warranty cos they want more business from us. I call them every other day to give them a kick. I speak english to them n refuse to speak mandarin to them. Somehow they understand what I saying. laugh.gif

Bro, just my 2 cents worth.
For motion detection on / off, the car dvr has to be on. So if u are driving, it is advisable to just record all the way (off motion detect)
For this model, motion detection means it will only start to record when moving objects is detected within its range.
Pls sms me at 97572495 for further enquires as i am seldom online.

Those police use video camcorder with windscreen suction mount. So far have not seen any on HD yet. Their type is quite dated models, bulky n would attract thieves smahing ur window n grab the camera.

Recently there are many HD car cameras from China go n have look. The leading brand for HD car camera at the moment is DOD-tech.

actually the van in front is the same distance from my car as the car behind. But I can't see the car plate at all. The specs for both front and back cameras are the same but the quality of the images are very different.

It looks ok to me. It is more rounder cos of the wider angle lens to cover ur entire bonnet area. Some ppl like it, some dont.

Basically I find abt 120 degrees wide angle lens is the best compromise. The higher degrees u go, it will be more rounder aka fish eye lens.

From the manual, english is abit CMI so you need to repharse yourself and understand. It should be able to start recording automatically

    ?USB IN
When the recorder is switched ON (using external power), ignore the
menu of external device connection, just wait for 2 sec. to enter
recording mode automatically and start recording.
    MENU Button?? ?MENU??USB IN???YES?*/?NO?
    * Default

    refering to Model GSE580
i gave up reading the manual and email the people in Taiwan and they confirmed with me that it will auto start when engine start...

    hi adrian, thanks!

yeah, actually that was what I thought too, that it's because of the wide angle. But the funny thing is that the rear camera also covers about 156 degrees but doesn't have this prob. And the other vd7000 youtube videos don't have this prob leh.

The vehicles in the screenshot were actually half a car length or less away from me, but I still can't make out the car plate in front of me.

Now there are actually 2 prob: I really can't see the car plate in front of me clearly, regardless of the distance and the rear video is also very grainy.

The screenshot does not show the true resolution of the video. Are you able to view the forward video in 640x320 resolution??? And did u select the highest quality to be recorded???

Otherwise just get another HD car camera.

The highest I can view in youtube is 360p. Have selected the highest possible for 2 channels, 640 x 320 at 10fps.

Actually I'm more put off by the fact that I can't see any numbers at all. I'm right up to ppl's butt but I still can't see the car plate. Do all car cameras distort the distance between the cars? Cos I'm worried if touch wood, anything happens, it may be at my disadvantage if the distance is magnified.

Wonder if i can ask for a refund. Have attached it to my car battery, so quite leh cheh to take it out. Think in the meantime, use my sony hx9v digital cam as a sub first.

Next time get car camera must chio along someone like you so as not to waste money!

In the manual and specs it says 20fps, but when you choose from the controls, it's only 10fps. Actually when I view it on my own video player and youtube, it's not that jerky. The major beef I have is its inability to record car plates! Kah pui!

Yeah, use it as a surveilance camera and will get another HD one for the road. Will do my homework and read up on the latest recommendations in this thread.

i conclude the Dod-tec cameras are best for image quality & HD recording, but probably the Koreans ones (e.g. blackvue) are good on features e.g. power management, design etc.

currently, there isnt an "ideal" product yet

i will be interested to try the GSE-550 though, whenever that is released...

for a complete system, a good combination (my idea) would be
: front GSE-550/520, providing HD recording for front.
: rear : blackvue, compact design + blue light serves as a deterrent to tailgaters
: side cameras hidden in mirrors, like this one Advance Autosound linked to a dual channel recorder

All connected to car battery, including a voltage monitoring box that will cut off after 48 hrs or if V drops below 12V whichever comes first.

I think its more of the starting system of the car than the camera itself. The camera detects 5V input, it turns on. No 5V input, it turn off. It works properly on my test table.

The problem is with the car starting. When u insert the key and turn, 12V is supplied to the cig lighter, camera will turn on. But when starting/cranking, it will temporary shut off the cig lighter 12V supply thus the camera receives no 5V.

So basically, there is no problem with the camera. But rather it requires some kind of logic to tell the camera this is just a drop in voltage. I discussed this problem with my electrical/electronics fren and he gave me three solutions :

    1) Have a small sealed lead acid batt provide power to the cig lighter.
    2) Make a PCB with delay circuitry.
    3) Connect extra capacitors in the cig lighter to "absorb" the temporary drop in voltage.

Me thinking of going for no.3 to try out. But yet to go to SLT and get suitable capacitors. laugh.gif So for now its still manually on/off.

Got a similar experience and like to share.

Bought my DOD F500HD via bro PI's group buy last year but got a problem of the unit not being able to be charged by the car ciggy source. It just powered down after the battery ran flat. blink.gif

As such, I had to bring the unit home to be charged by my home's power source every time the battery became dry and needless to say it was a real hassle. furious.gif Bro PI was a real great guy who assisted me in whatever ways possible thumbsup.gif and even helped me sent the unit to DOD's ROC base for their assessement/repair.

Unfortunately the same problem persisted after I got it back later sad.gif .

Eventually I contacted DOD via email myself and I sent the whole unit back to ROC for their assessment again.

This time they shipped over a brand new unit to replace the faulty set.

Even this new set also got a funny issue: if you disrupt the power supply e.g. accidentally touching the USB adapter to the ciggy source, the unit would not power down after you kill the engine. It would literally continue filiming till the juice runs dry. So I try to be careful not to touch it if I can.

Maybe you can contact DOD directly and tell them your problem and see what they can do.

for DOD, the local agent is solid resources. if you never buy from them, of course they will not help.

Oh i also have this problem with my F500. So I always check whether the unit powers down after switching off the car engine.
If the unit does not power down, just need to press the red button to stop the recording. and after 5 min of non-activity, the unit will power down by itself
