The one-hour PM2.5 reading hit 442 for the west of Singapore at 10pm yesterday - believed to be the highest reading this year.
Elsewhere during the hour, readings ranged from 51 to 299, with the southern and central parts of Singapore recording 299 and 130 respectively. PM2.5 refers to particles that are 2.5 microns or smaller. The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) stood at 101-136 in the unhealthy range, while the three-hour PSI was 152 as of 10pm.
The National Environment Agency said hazy conditions are likely to persist in the next 24 hours, with the 24-hour PSI expected to be in the low- to mid-section of the unhealthy range.
Meanwhile, the Singapore team sent to Indonesia to help tackle the haze-causing fires has performed 47 water-bombing operations and put out about 35 hot spots in Indonesia since it joined multinational efforts to douse the fires raging there.

Haze crisis could persist into new year, say experts
In a Facebook post yesterday, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said it has been a team effort for the 40 personnel from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) who arrived more than a week ago in Palembang.
Dr Ng said: "They know the task is difficult and that it is hard to put out fires without the help of rain. But the SAF's presence as part of a multinational effort does send a strong signal that there is international attention and support as Indonesia seeks to address the problem of transboundary haze which has affected many neighbouring countries."
He said one of the team members is a full-time national serviceman who volunteered for the mission.
On Oct 10, the SAF sent a 34-strong team to Indonesia, accompanied by a six- man Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team from the SCDF. Also deployed was a CH-47D Chinook helicopter and two C-130 planes.
Australia and Malaysia are also helping in the firefighting efforts.
yeah ... do not overlook PM2.5 reading

PSI reading shows how hazy the environment ... ie: smoky
PM2.5 reading shows the particles (mainly harmful) in the air ...

PM2.5 can be high (dangerous) even PSI reading is low-to-moderate

Sengkang that is more eastwards is still susceptible to haze from kalimantan, though due to distance, usually it's not as jialat as west from sumatra, so in a game of haze roulette, the odds are just lower.

These readings are not normalised/calibrated, but at least in relation to normal concentration, you can know that there is a spike and take necessary action for sensitive group (on purifier, put on mask, tell kid/elderly go home/stay indoors).

Redmart to stop carrying APP products following haze allegations

SINGAPORE - Online groceries retailer RedMart announced on Monday (Oct 19) that all paper products sourced from the Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) would be withdrawn from sale, over the company's purported links to Indonesian forest fires causing the haze.

The announcement, made on its Facebook page, stated that the withdrawal was done voluntarily based on investigations into APP's involvement by the Singapore Environment Council and the National Environment Agency , as well as the temporary suspension of the Green Label certification of APP's exclusive distributor, Universal Sovereign Trading.

Affected items include products under the Paseo and NICE brands.

In the post, RedMart said that it carried 13 other paper products that were Green Label certified and its own house brand paper products were certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council.

Redmart is the latest in a line of retailers to stop selling APP products. Supermarket chains FairPrice, Sheng Siong and Prime stopped carrying the company's paper products earlier this month.

The Dairy Farm group, which operates chains such as 7-Eleven, Giant and Cold Storage, has also announced that it will no longer be purchasing products from APP once current stocks are sold out.

TODAY reports: The education ministry says it will "carefully re-assess our existing haze-management measures to better protect our students from the effects of haze for future haze seasons.
- ByKelly Ng, TODAY
- POSTED:21 Oct 2015 08:41
-
- UPDATED:21 Oct 2015 08:47
SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) is working with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) to review its haze-management measures in schools, it said on Tuesday (Oct 20) in response to TODAYs queries. We will provide an update on the enhanced haze management measures when we have completed the review, the ministry said.
Together with MOH and NEA, the education ministry will carefully re-assess our existing haze-management measures to better protect our students from the effects of haze for future haze seasons.
MOE was responding to a petition for the ministry to take immediate steps to haze-proof its schools. Started about two days ago, the petition has garnered almost 2,500 supporters as of 8am on Wednesday.
Initiated by Dr Christy Toh - a mother of two aged five and nine, thepetition on Change.orgcalled on MOE to make arrangements for lessons to be conducted in air-conditioned rooms with mechanical air filters and implement e-learning for non-essential lessons when PM2.5 concentration reaches unhealthy levels, among other things.
Support for the petition grew as both PM2.5 and three-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings rocketed on Monday night. The one-hour PM2.5 levels hit 471 micrograms per cubic metre in western Singapore at 11pm - the highest level recorded so far this year.
PM2.5 refers to fine particles less than 2.5 microns in diameter, which can slip past the nasal passages into the lungs and blood streams. Guidelines by the World Health Organization state that there is little evidence for setting a threshold for particular matter below which there will be no adverse health effects. But, the American Environmental Protection Agency sets a 24-hour threshold for PM2.5 at a level of 35 micrograms per cubic metre.
In the petition, Dr Toh noted that children are particularly vulnerable to the haze because their respiratory systems are immature. She told TODAY: The measures now are very inconsistent across different schools, you have teachers who say children do not need to wear masks in the classroom because classrooms are indoors even though the doors and windows remain open.
Other parents whom this newspaper spoke to noted that current MOE guidelines only call for lesson plans to be modified only when the 24-hour PSI surges beyond 200, which they found inadequate.
Mdm Law Jee Wei, who has a 10-year-old son and five-year-old daughter, said she has kept her son from school for at least five times over the last two months when haze conditions worsened. But we cannot keep doing that, we dont want him to fall back (in his studies), and he wants to attend classes too, she said.
Dr Leong Hoe Nam, an infectious disease doctor in private practice, said school-going children are especially vulnerable because many classrooms are not air-conditioned. Even when we move students into an air-conditioned hall when PSI levels cross MOEs threshold, the hall will be overcrowded and lessons cannot be conducted in an effective manner, he said.
As part of MOEs existing haze-management measures, all schools have sufficient enclosed spaces to cater to the students. The schools are also equipped with air purifiers for students who feel unwell or have underlying conditions. Citing the closure of schools on Sep 25, MOE said it would also consider shutting schools when the 24-hour PSI for the next day is expected to hit hazardous levels. It added: Nevertheless, we also note that this years haze season is unusually prolonged, and with more episodes of elevated PSI levels than we have typically experienced in the past.

i dun think they will stop burning after starting it, this was probably in their plan for the usage of the land hence they have to do it once and for all.

Actually come to think of it, it is the resources within their land that they can do want what they want, unfortunately the earth have to pay for it.

Provincial governments have a lot of leeway nowadays after Indonesia decentralised control about 10+ years ago.
It's all just paper talk only. Their lawmakers have very little power over how things are run/done outside the capital.

Haha just get your air purifiers and your masks. All the talk in the world won't do anything.

Problem is that they keep finding new land to burn. And palm trees become less productive with age. So have to burn again...

When haze over, will they donate the purifiers to school ...
My guess is even if they want to donate, the schools might not want to own them.

AP require filter replacements, and with ownership comes the responsibility of maintaining them.

Imagine how many different brands and models of AP donated by parents, then factor in the effort to source for the different types of replacement filters, and make sure they are the lowest in cost.

Too much of a hassle, imo.

Singapores one-plane offer to help fight fires insultingPUBLISHED:10:57 PM, OCTOBER 21, 2015UPDATED:11:05 PM, OCTOBER 21, 2015JAKARTA Singapores offer in September of only one aircraft to Indonesia to help fight forest fires that have caused thick haze to descend around the region was insulting, said Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
Speaking in an interview last Friday (Oct 16) with the countrys Tempo magazine, Mr Luhut defended Indonesias perceived tardiness in putting out the fires and in accepting foreign aid.
During the dry season, peatlands tend to be very flammable. When we bombard the land with water to put out the flames, they just come out again. So I get a headache when people get upset. What are we supposed to do? he replied when asked why this years forest fires are worse than those of last years.
Then someone asks why we didnt accept the assistance offered earlier. There are many reasons for that. Firstly, we wanted to try and do it on our own. Secondly, we didnt realise the process would be so long. Thirdly, (Singapore) offered only one aircraft. It was insulting.
In September, Singapore offered a C-130 aircraft for cloud-seeding operations, a Chinook helicopter with a water bucket for aerial fire-fighting, and up to two C-130 aircraft to ferry the Singapore Civil Defence Force fire-fighting assistance team.
Mr Luhuts comments in the latest issue of the magazine came after Indonesia finally accepted help from Singapore on Oct 7 after repeatedly declining offers of help for weeks. Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen had even flown to Jakarta at the end of September to meet his Indonesian counterpart at one of the meetings. During his visit, Dr Ng also met Mr Luhut.
On October 11, aircraft from Singapore and Malaysia began water-bombing missions to put out the raging fires in South Sumatra.
Singapore sent a Republic of Singapore Armed Forces (RSAF) Chinook helicopter with a 5,000-litre heli-bucket and 34 SAF personnel to help fight the ongoing forest fires, together with a six-man Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team from the Singapore Civil Defence Force. Two RSAF C-130 aircraft were also deployed to transport SAF and SCDF personnel.
In an interview on Oct 7, Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung told CNN Indonesia that Jakarta had earlier rejected Singapores offers of assistance because it was concerned that the city state would claim credit for solving the problem, despite being worried about the rapidly deteriorating situation.
In the Tempo interview, Mr Luhut also pledged to confiscate the land and revoke the licences of big companies that practise illegal burning next year.
This haze problem is also about injustice. When a company controls 2.8 million hectares of land, where is the justice? Then there are those who own 600,000 hectares of land but own not a single fire extinguisher. Should the government be dousing fires all the time? If we call it a national disaster, they will benefit by it. AGENCIES

Their general fighting fire at ground zero said aircraft water bombing are useless against peat fires. He said more manpower on the ground to fight fires are more effective. The Indo minister sits in his comfortable aircon offit says one aircraft from us is insulting when we sent ground troops and aircraft to assist them. There are also non-profitable groups volunteer to help Indonesians with masks and fire fighting equipment.

Do they know the world is watching them fumble? They still have the cheek to kpkb? So low self esteem, scared Singapore claim credit for our efforts. What a bunch of incompetent fools.

Companies will benefit if haze problem declared national disaster: Indonesian minister"They have 500 million pounds sterling in London banks, but they demand that we douse the flames," the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security told Indonesia's Tempo magazine.POSTED: 21 Oct 2015 23:59 UPDATED: 22 Oct 2015 07:27Luhut Pandjaitan (L) chats with members of the cabinet at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Indonesia August 12, 2015. REUTERS/Darren Whiteside/FilesSINGAPORE: The annual haze problem in Indonesia is about injustice, Indonesia's coordinating minister for politics, law and security Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said."When a company controls 2.8 million hectares of land, where is the justice? Then there are those that own 600,000 hectares of land but own not a single fire extinguisher," he said in an interview in the Oct 25 issue of Tempo, an Indonesian weekly news magazine. He explained authorities' reluctance to declare the haze problem a national disaster, even though air pollution levels in some Indonesian cities have reached hazardous levels at more than 2,600 API."Should the government be dousing fires all the time? If we call it a national disaster, they will benefit from it," he said, referring to land concession owners. "They have 500 million pounds sterling in London banks, but they demand that we douse the flames."Mr Luhut added that his government did not accept the assistance offered by neighbouring countries earlier because they "wanted to try and do it on their own". He also said that it was "insulting" that (Singapore had) "offered only one aircraft".The minister touched on his involvement in tackling the forest fires, which used to be managed largely by the National Disaster Management Agency. "Well, that's how the President wants it. Perhaps he feels it's too important. That's why we're doing it."He added that President Joko Widodo has gone to the affected areas many times "so he must see it as a serious problem". Asked about 30 companies that have reportedly been censured for fires and Mr Luhut said "many more" will be indicted. "If it happens again next year, we will confiscate all their lands, revoke their licences," he told Tempo. "Now they don't dare do any funny business. They know I'm on their case."- CNA/hs

English translation:
Published on 21 Oct 2015ENGLISH VERSION:
Message from the Director of Kalaweit, to the Indonesian President, Joko Widodo
My name is Chanee, I come from Europe, but I have lived in Kalimantain for 17 years , in the central province of Palangkaraya.
I'm proud to have obtained Indonesian nationality 3 years ago, because I really love Indonesia.
But Mr President, allow me to convey to you today my anger.
I'm not angry just because my son has a respiratory infection, like hundreds of other children. I'm not angry just because thousands of people have difficulty in breathing, or because they cry and pray to be able to see the sun. I'm not angry just because the forest in Kalimantan is in the process of being destroyed.
Mr President, I'm angry because all of this suffering exists because of the palm oil industry. The decisions of both the previous governments and the current government, are at the root of this problem, which occurs every year, and today is even further aggravated by El Nino.
Earlier in June I had identified, from the sky, dozens of fires, burning in peat swamps to allow the expansion of palm plantations. At that time, before the smoke haze made headlines, these fires could still be extinguished.
But this didn't happen. The helicopter water-bomber arrived 2 months later. The teams on the ground can do little once the fires have spread, especially as they burn in peat.
The owners of the land in which fires occur will not be punished.
It's not me who'll teach you, Mr President, that corruption, nepotism, and intimidation, are common to support the expansion of palm plantations.
When you have, Mr President, made the decision to create new channels in the central province of Kalimantan, you have simply aggravated the situation even further. These channels will drain water from the forest, creating even drier conditions to exacerbate and accelerate the next fires.
Mr President, I'm angry, not simply as an activist for the environment, but also as a father, husband, and someone who really loves Indonesia.
Slowly, the leaders of these fires steal our health.
Is this what you want Mr President? For the Palm Oil Industry?

3,000 stranded in Langkawi due to hazeIan Yee and Vivienne WongFriday, Oct 23, 2015Shades of grey: The sea view outside Kuah Jetty almost completely covered by haze.Photo: The Star/ANNLANGKAWI - Close to 3,000 people, mostly tourists, were stranded here as the haze grounded almost all flights to and from Langkawi International Airport for the past two days.Yesterday morning, passengers of certain airlines were told the next available flights would be late this afternoon, and even then, there was no guarantee that they wouldn't be cancelled."We cannot give any estimates because we can't predict the haze."We can only wait until visibility levels are safe, inform the airlines, and let them decide whether it's safe to fly," said airport manager Jefry Ramli.Sandra Chu and Jimmy Cheung, both 49, from Hong Kong, spent two days waiting for replacement flights at the airport, and their rescheduled flight to Kuala Lumpur yesterday was also cancelled. They spent over HK$10,000 (S$1,800) on their trip to Pulau Langkawi, and have now been forced to forego most of the hotel stays and tour packages they've paid for in KL."It's a total loss," said Cheung of the KL leg of his holiday. "I never experienced anything like this. I don't think I'll ever come back here."Frenchman Aoune Sane, 33, and his friends had to cancel their flights to KL and Phuket, worth a total of 300 (S$500), due to the delays. They finally decided to travel to Phuket by sea - a five-hour journey - in order to catch their flight back to Paris from Thailand.Others desperate to get to the mainland had to take the ferry from Kuah Jetty to Kuala Perlis or Penang, and book land transport from there.Airport and airline staff were doing their best to cope with the chaos caused by the haze."Only a few have shouted at us, but that's to be expected," said AirAsia guest service assistant Mohd Azhar Saidan, who was in good spirits despite working 12-hour shifts for the past three days.Jefry said the airport was also doing its best to help passengers.

EVERY BREATH YOU TAKEAs part of the workshop, the team measured the levels of gas and smoke particles in the airincluding those that can get into the human respiratory system when inhaledto understand the severity of the impacts on human health.
There is a complete envelopment of smoke all over the place, said Martin Wooster, Professor of Earth Observation Science at Kings College London.
And if youre here without a mask, you are breathing much of that smoke into your lungs, which is obviously, I would say, extremely hazardous for your health.
The names of just some of the noxious components of the smoke are enough to show why: ozone, carbon monoxide, cyanide, ammonia and formaldehyde.

It doesn't bother the Indonesian Govt about it's people's health or death; since there are so many of them, there'll always be plenty to replace......must be due to the regular inhalation of toxic chemicals affecting the brain cells of people who govern the country.
Anyway, their resoning : it's their land that is burning, not ours. If we can't tahan, we have to come up with money & expertise to quell the burning ourselve; with their permission. At the moment, it's burning out of control due to their lackadaisical & condescending attitude.
Even other countries have pitch in to help also still not much use to the haze situation?!
They wait untill the burn job is 80 to 90% done, then accept help when its too late. If they accepted when offer was 1st made...it wont b this fiery mess we see.

Published on Oct 26, 2015Jakarta hit as haze crosses Java SeaJAKARTA
JAKARTA residents were told by the government yesterday to be prepared for haze coming from the forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan, while Singapore urged Asean members to take decisive action to end the air pollution which has been troubling the region.
"I have instructed hospitals to stand by (for haze-related cases)," the Tempo online newspaper quoted Denny Wahyu Haryanto, head of the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency, as saying yesterday.
"Smoke has covered the sky of Jakarta since Friday," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Management, reported the Detik online news portal.
Mr Sutopo added that the provinces of Banten, West Java, East Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara would also be wholly or partly shrouded in haze.
Earlier on Saturday, Mr Sutopo has warned that a thin haze was spreading across the Java Sea to Jakarta due to wind conditions.
As of last evening, visibility in Jakarta has slightly declined, although the capital's air quality remained "healthy", reported Detik.
Meanwhile, Central Kalimantan province, where the Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) rose to more than 2,400 over the weekend, is urgently seeking oxygen cylinders from the central government to be distributed to haze-choked residents, reported Tempo.
Residents are also being evacuated from Palangkaraya, the provincial capital. The air pollution there peaked at 1,682 yesterday, dropping to 518 at 5pm. In Indonesia, any index reading above 350 is considered hazardous.
Indonesia has confirmed that 10 people had died from haze-related causes - some were firefighters killed directly by the blazes while others had succumbed to respiratory illnesses or medical conditions exacerbated by the pollution.
The haze over southern and central islands of Philippines also thickened yesterday, causing six flights to be cancelled and hospitals put on alert.
Pilots flying in the central city of Cebu could see only 8km ahead, said government weather observer John Agbay, adding visibility was also reduced on the western island of Palawan, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
The haze has affected Thailand too, besides Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Singapore yesterday urged fellow Asean members to take "firm and decisive action" against the haze, ahead of the Nov 19 Asean summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur.
"Singapore will work closely with other Asean countries to fully operationalise the Asean Haze Monitoring System, and other cooperative initiatives," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement.
This came a day after Singapore troops and firefighters returned from Sumatra where they joined an international effort in combating forest fires.
The agenda of the 10-nation summit has not been made public, but diplomatic sources say the haze is likely to be raised by member countries affected by the pollution, AFP reported.
The MFA said Singapore will pursue legal action against "errant companies responsible for the haze" and called on Indonesia to respond to "our repeated requests to share information" on the firms.
Paper and palm oil firms have been blamed for deliberately setting off fires to clear land for cultivation.
The haze and reduced visibility are expected to persist in Singapore today, and the conditions might deteriorate if denser haze is blown in from Kalimantan, the National Environment Agency said in an update at 6pm yesterday.
The air quality for the next 24 hours is expected to be in the mid to high sections of the unhealthy range.
The number of hot spots detected in Sumatra and Kalimantan yesterday was three and 212 respectively.

I told my wife a few months back, don't you ever get used to the haze and get lackadaisical about the need to use the mask, esp with the kids.

When I am back on weekends, when I go out to tabao makan, I am like one of those few siao lang ("end of the world is coming, repent" types) still wearing a mask. My wife tells me CBD area now, 90% bo chup liao.

I also told her that the kids don mask once they step out regardless of the readings until they put out the fire for good.

Reason? While the 5 locations where readings are taken is a good step forward compared to other countries (Ho Chi Minh has jacksh1t for readings), I feel we can't rely on it for pinpoint accuracy (not a criticism of the equipment) as we do not live next to the apparatus taking measurements, even if we did, there is the wind factor that makes it very variable.

Supposing if we somehow eliminated all the variables above, there is the issue of making current decisions based on date about an hour old as measurements are taken hourly and only posted 15mins past the hour.

The only conclusions I can draw from the readings is:

1. The haze is all around us
2. It was quite bad an hour ago
3. Something that eludes people most of the time, you can't see PM2.5 particles in small concentration in the air but by the time, you can, it's probably very unhealthy or hazardous levels and there's a huge range from Ricola Fresh Swiss Mountain air to Hazadous (eg: Moderate or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy for every mothers' sons and daughters)

To date no longitudinal study but I think downstream there would definitely be long term effects
Following evolution, there will definitely be some that will adapt and mutate to suit this new environment, though many more will die along the way.

I'm not ready to be part of the latter. So still mask on when out, bunker down with air purifier when in.
Yesterday I was exposed to psi of >2000! I went to public toilet at the neighbour hood hawker without wearing mask and the guy beside me is smoking...
I havent picked up the habit of wearing mask during bad haze outdoor and I think it's bad
Whole day outside can see a layer of white haze, and yet there is no burning smell. Still thinking it is our nose really immune to the haze smell or due to other reasons?

When the smoke from forest fires turned a thick, acrid yellow, casting an apocalyptic glow over Palangkaraya, Kartika Sari decided to grab her child and flee the Indonesian city at the epicentre of the haze crisis smothering Southeast Asia.
The 32-year-old pharmacist and her three-year-old daughter have for weeks been inhaling toxic air in Palangkaraya, a city of 240,000 that has been engulfed in poisonous darkness by smoke from peat land set alight to clear land for palm oil plantations.
"The smoke was no longer white, it was yellow," she told AFP from an evacuation centre in Banjarmasin, a six-hour drive from Palangkaraya.
"Usually we just endured it, even though we had headaches and felt nauseous. But it has got so bad lately, that I can't take it anymore. I can't even breathe fresh air."
Now she waits in limbo in a basic shelter with nine other evacuees, mostly children, including a one-year-old boy suffering from a severe cough and diarrhoea.
Authorities say the fires from slash-and-burn farming in Borneo and neighbouring Sumatra have killed 10 people so far, some of whom died while fighting the blazes and others from the pollution.
Respiratory illnesses in Palangkaraya have soared as the choking smog has worsened in recent weeks.
-- "No escape" --
While many have relocated to safety elsewhere with friends and relatives, others have no choice but to stay behind despite the risks posed by the noxious haze.
39-year-old Rahmah, a street vendor in Palangkaraya, said she needed to keep doing her job to pay her children's school fees, despite the toll on her health from working outdoors.
"I have to stay whether I like it or not. My livelihood is here so how can I leave?" Rahmah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP on the porch of her riverfront wooden house in Palangkaraya.
"You get light headed after a while, but I just try my best to cure myself with simple medication."
Her neighbour Nurjanah, who shares a small house with seven other family members, including her five-month-old granddaughter, echoed the sense of desperation felt in the blighted city, where visibility is sometimes as low as a few dozen metres (yards).
"Leave? Where to?" Nurjanah said, when asked why she doesn't evacuate.
"The smoke gets everywhere, so what's the point of evacuating when there's no escape?"
-- "Can't go on like this" --
At a nearby health clinic, hundreds of people queue for hours for a chance to use one of the 10 oxygen tanks available to get a breath of fresh air.
Even there the haze finds its way in, swarming around 23-year-old English teacher Ayu Dwitasari, who has suffered from bronchitis for days and is having trouble breathing.
"It's got especially bad today, that is why I came here," Dwitasari told AFP.
Mass evacuations -- especially of children and those suffering chronic respiratory illnesses -- were not out of the question, said Indonesian military spokesman Tatang Sulaiman.
Three warships carrying medical teams, tents, cooking stoves and protective masks were on their way to the worst-affected regions in Kalimantan -- Indonesia's half of Borneo -- and Sumatra, he said, to help build temporary shelters away from the haze-plagued cities.
"Our warships are ready to evacuate residents, whether to these temporary shelters, or even to take them on board. We are prepared for that," he told AFP.
But for those fighting the fires, a lack of equipment and tinder-dry conditions are hampering their best efforts to curb the thousands of blazes smouldering on carbon-rich peat lands.
In Kuala Kapuas, not far from Palangkaraya, 33-year-old volunteer Rahmat Muhamad Noor and around 20 others toil around the clock fighting the fires, struggling with limited water and poor equipment.
Wearing thin rubber boots and a cotton face mask, Noor tried desperately to stamp out a fire with a wooden stick after the machine pumping water through the hose broke down.
"Please tell the government we need more help," he told AFP. "We need masks. We can't go on like this."

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is set to personally lead the haze countermeasure efforts and stay at the affected regions such as Jambi and Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan following his return to Indonesia after a brief visit to the US.

"[The President] will stay for several days in the [affected regions] to directly conduct [haze countermeasure efforts]. North east monsoon might bring the haze from Kalimantan to Jakarta, that why he is concern. I think he could care less about Sumatra.
This is not a mrt system failure, its so much much more important than that. We are talking about millions and millions of people health and life.
i though he will be a great president for indo, seem like im maybe wrong.
Hard to get re-elect. This group of people will cause the downfall of his era, so many millions affected and drag for so many months already.

Will it stay and would not change anymore? So that the haze will never come back?
We should be toward the end of the seasonal transition, it may change day-to-day slightly, but certainly it will stay at least until January. Unless we are going through climate change ... then winter will also not come for China, Korea, Japan .. magnetic fields will shift ... oceans will shift ..

Rainfall in Indonesia starts taming forest fires and hazeBY JOE COCHRANE PUBLISHED: 9:33 AM, OCTOBER 29, 2015An Indonesian soldier checks on a peat land fire near Palangkaraya, central Kalimantan, Indonesia, on Oct 28, 2015. Photo: ReutersJAKARTA Thanks to heavy rainfall, Indonesia may have turned the corner in battling mass forest fires that have blanketed much of Southeast Asia in toxic haze, but more rain will be needed in the coming days to get the blazes under control, a senior government minister said Wednesday.Torrential rains overnight Tuesday (Oct 27) in the regions of Sumatra and Kalimantan where forest fires have been raging for weeks, sickening hundreds of thousands of people have significantly reduced the size and number of fires, said Mr Luhut B Pandjaitan, Indonesias coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs.I hope we have turned the corner, he said in an interview. If the rain continues over the next five days, we are past this.Mr Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Agency for Disaster Management in Indonesia, said visibility and air quality had improved since Monday in affected areas. He said the number of hot spots, areas where satellite imagery shows heavy forest fires, had dropped to 291 on yesterday from 1,578 on Monday because of the heavy rains. This is significant. Its much better now, Mr Sutopo said, but he added that air quality in some affected areas continued to be measured as unhealthy. Some scientists had feared the fires and haze could last through the end of the year. The crisis began in late August when fires were set to clear land for palm oil plantations and other agricultural uses. While this has been occurring for decades, an especially long dry season this year coupled with the effects of El Nio threaten to make the fires and haze the worst on record, according to scientists.Mr Luhut, who has been appointed by Indonesias president to oversee the crisis, said more rain was forecast for the coming days, although not every day, in southern Sumatra and most of Kalimantan, also known as Indonesian Borneo. Its too early to tell, but if the rain comes again tomorrow and the next, then 75 percent of the fires will be stopped, he said.Seventeen Indonesian civilians have died from respiratory illnesses caused by the haze, as well as one firefighter in an operational accident, Mr Luhut said.Indonesia has deployed 2,000 army soldiers and 500 police officers to Sumatra and Kalimantan to help local fire crews battle the blazes. The government is also using airplanes and helicopters to drop water and fire retardants.President Joko Widodo of Indonesia cut short by one day an official visit to the United States this week so he could return home to tour affected areas. He was scheduled to visit South Sumatra on Thursday.Firefighting and commercial aircraft were able to land thanks to better visibility on Wednesday in Palangkaraya, the capital of Central Kalimantan province, and Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra province, where flights had been cancelled for days, Luhut said. The Indonesian government has set up shelters containing air purifiers for families with infants who want to evacuate their homes for health reasons.Mr Luhut said that less than 100 people took up the offer in Sumatra and that yesterday there were no new arrivals at shelters there or in Kalimantan. In the early weeks of the crisis, Indonesia was criticised by its neighbours, including Singapore and Malaysia, where haze has blanketed parts of those countries, as well as southern Thailand and the southern Philippines.Asked if the Indonesian government had mishandled the crisis in its earlier weeks, Mr Luhut said the countrys one mistake was in approving palm oil concessions on 14.8 million acres of peatlands during the past decade, which when drained and burned to clear land for agriculture emit high levels of carbon dioxide into the air. Yahoo : 2 million hectares of Indonesian forest burnt since June, says report

More than two million hectares of Indonesia's forests were burnt down in the past five months, Indonesian authorities have revealed, as neighbouring countries get respite from the choking smoke.

Jakarta Globe reported the country's National Space and Aviation Agency (Lapan) as estimating that 2,089,911 hectares of forest area were lost to fires, based on satellite data collected from June 21 to October 20.

We have compared the data gathered from before and after the fires started, Parwati Sofan, a senior official at Lapan was quoted as telling a press conference in Central Jakarta on Friday.

It said Lapan estimated that 832,999 hectares of forests were burnt in Sumatra, 806,817 hectares in Kalimantan, 353,191 hectares in Papua, 30,912 hectares in Sulawesi, 30,162 hectares in Bali and Nusa Tenggara, 18,768 in Java, and 17,063 in Maluku.

The figures may actually be higher, as Parwati reportedly said the satellite is unable to scan forest areas covered in smoke.

He added that the numbers were expected to increase since they were still in the midst of collecting date.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho reportedly said that 32% of the hot spots were in non-concession forest areas, 20% in industrial forest areas, and 20% in palm oil plantations.

Smoke from Indonesia's forest fires have choked neighbouring countries for nearly two months now, forcing schools in Malaysia to close for several days on end, flights to be cancelled, and a hike in illnesses across several states. November 1, 2015.

Yahoo : Bali flights grounded after ash cloud closes airport

Ash spewing from a volcano forced Indonesian authorities to close the international airport on Bali on Tuesday, an official said, temporarily grounding all flights to the popular holiday island.

Authorities decided to close Ngurah Rai International Airport for four hours until 11.30 pm (1530 GMT) so they could assess the risk posed by a large ash cloud drifting from Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on the nearby island of Lombok.

Airport manager Trikora Harjo said the situation would be re-evaluated as the evening went on but unless conditions improved the airport could remain shut.

"If there's any chance available (to reopen the airport) I will, but if not, I will continue to keep it closed," he told AFP, adding he did not yet know how many flights would be affected.

Australian airlines Virgin Australia and Jetstar had already cancelled all flights Tuesday, deeming conditions unsafe for flying, with Virgin also scrapping its roster for Wednesday.

Jetstar advised passengers not to travel to the airport for flights to and from Bali until further notice, while AirAsia said several flights would be "adjusted" due to the temporary closure.

Ash from a different volcano stranded thousands of passengers on Bali for days during the peak holiday season in July.

Air quality expected to worsen as haze returnsThe clear skies seen over the past few days, such as this one on Nov 3, 2015, may soon give way to haze again.ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANGThe haze is creeping its way back into Singapore, after a brief hiatus brought on by increased rainfall.
Air quality here for today is expected to deteriorate into the high end of the moderate range, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a forecast yesterday.
And it may even waft into the low end of the unhealthy range if denser haze is blown in.

This comes after a week of clearer skies thanks to wetter weather, with 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings staying well in the middle of the moderate range of 50 to 100.
Despite continued showers and a fall in the number of hot spots in Sumatra from 66 last week to 55 yesterday, the haze is still expected to make a return here.
As of 5pm yesterday, the 24-hour PSI reading was 75 to 86. The one-hour PM2.5 reading then was 40-50 micrograms per cubic m.
Prevailing winds today are expected to be weak and blow from the south or south-west, with thundery showers forecast in the late morning and early afternoon, the NEA said.
Slight haze and reduced visibility conditions can be expected "if winds are unfavourable", it added.
Given the air quality forecast for today, the NEA advised healthy people to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion.
Dr Erik Velasco, a research scientist from the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, said that rain in Singapore is no permanent cure for the haze here.
"If we experience heavy rain, it will be a temporary relief, but only for a few hours," he said.
"What we need to stop the haze is more rain in Sumatra and Kalimantan."
Dr Velasco added that if winds continue to blow from the south and east, where Sumatra and Kalimantan are, respectively, hazy conditions will also persist.
He also cautioned that a drop in detected hot spots may not necessarily mean cleaner air.
"Satellite images may not be able to pick up all the hot spots if conditions are cloudy," he said.
Still, he remains optimistic about the air situation here.
"I'm not expecting very serious haze here again," he said.
"It has been raining in Kalimantan and Sumatra, and the number of forest fires has dropped a lot."

SOUTH SUMATRA, Indonesia: A Palembang District Court in South Sumatra has rejected all claims made by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry against PT Bumi Mekar Hijau, for allegedly causing forest fires in South Sumatra.
The Ministry had demanded a fine of more than US$570 million for damage made to the environment and for its recovery.
PT Bumi Mekar Hijau, a subsidiary of Asia Pulp and Paper, one of the largest pulp and paper companies in the world, was suspected of causing fires on 20,000 hectares of concession land in Ogan Kemering Ilir, South Sumatra in 2014.
In its ruling, the court's three judges said there was no damage done to the environment as a result of the forest fires on that land, and it could still be used for planting. In addition, the judges said the Indonesian government had not experienced losses as a result of the forest fires.
The court also ordered Jakarta to pay the costs of the proceedings, amounting to about US$700.
"The implications are extraordinary. In future, those responsible for forest fires and corporations will feel they cant be touched by the law, and their bad practices will not change," said Khalisah Khalid, Head of Research and Resource Development, Indonesian Forum for the Environment.
"When the corporations bad practices cant improve, the further implication is on ecological disaster. Haze will continue to happen, and the victims will continue to increase.
Asia Pulp and Paper was one of several companies that had its products taken off the shelves in Singapore after the National Environment Agency (NEA) launched an investigation in September into the company's role in the forest fires in Indonesia.
The NEA had sent a 'preventive measures' notice to the company asking it to deploy fire-fighting personnel to extinguish or prevent the spread of any fire on its land.
The 2015 forest fires are estimated to have cost Indonesia's economy US$16 billion, more than double the sum spent on rebuilding Aceh after the 2004 tsunami, according to the World Bank.

If based on the trend, the severity of haze here is alternate year, 2013 and 2015 serious haze. So 2014 and 2016 the haze should be mild?

Nearly 70 Forest Fires Found In Indonesia, Hazy Weather Possibly Soon

Although the region is experiencing rainy weather, it appears that Indonesia are still having forest fires, and their neighbours will probably suffer another round of bad hazy weather.

According toa report by China Press, the Indonesian authorities have found nearly 70 forest fires in the country, signaling a very troubling days ahead. Satellite has shown that more than half of these fires happened in Kalimantan, but more fires are also found in Riau and Sumatera areas.

The South East Asean region has experienced one of the worst haze last year, after the El-nino phenomenon worsened the commonly occurringforest fires in Indonesia. Most of these fires aredeliberately started by irresponsible farmers as a cheap way of clearing forests for farming. The global community has largely criticised Indonesia for allowing the fire to happen, but despite global pressure, the forest burning continued year-after-year.
Authorities has claimed that they have done everything they could to slow the fire, but if the farmers continue their forest-burning activities, theres nothing much they can do to stop these events from occurring again.

This year seem quite early
I saw some apparent haze in the morning about 7:30~8:30, air got bad smell. It went away shortly.

There is reportedly over 200 hectares already being burnt.

I can't believe that that is due to smallholders.

It must be multinationals companies doing it.
I wonder if Singapore companies or Indonesian companies owned or run by Singaporeans are involved.
I know what I think.

I also wonder if these areas of forest being burnt supposedly accidentally are areas that have not yet been logged or if they are areas which have already been logged out and have no value for logging companies.
Seems like many experience haze for the past few days, but there is no report from the NEA side le?

Agricultural Fires Cover Most of Indochina (12 Feb 2016)NASA's Suomi NPP satellite collected this natural-color image using the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument on February 08, 2016 which detected hundreds of fires burning in various regions of Indochina. The location, widespread nature, and number of fires suggest that these fires were deliberately set to manage land. Farmers often use fire to return nutrients to the soil and to clear the ground of unwanted plants.

The Kingdom exported 17,380 tons of crude palm oil in 2015, compared with 12,211 tons the previous year, an increase of 42.3 percent, according to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Malaysia imported the biggest amount of crude palm oil from the Kingdom. Cambodia exported 12,674 tons to Malaysia, 1,100 tons to China and 2,000 tons to Thailand, the report said.

From handphone to power bank to air purifier to car camera...
So far no issues. Filters up to PM2.5. Happy with that.
Checking the specs again, the following is copied from their website :

"It filters out over 99% of particles sized 0.3?m and larger, using a H11-grade high density HEPA filter from Japanese manufacturer Toray."

Of course the filtration standards arebased onthe fact that original filters are used. For this price, I think it's a great buy.
Share good 'kang tao' with everyone.
Xiaomi air purifier now selling in Singapore. Pretty good filtration for the price paid. Xiaomi website advertise for $299. Authorised agent NTUC Fairprice selling for $279, promotion till end of March. Local units, local warranty.
Should be able to get from the larger Fairprice outlets. Bought mine at Fairprice Xtra.
Is filter washable or any issue in finding replacements? TIA.
Is filter washable or any issue in finding replacements? TIA.
Filter is not washable. HEPA filters are normally fibreglass based, therefore not washable.
As of now, Fairprice has not brought in the filter. However, salesman said agent will be bringing it in at some point. You can also buy it online.

SINGAPORE: There is "zero chance" that the region will experience the same bout of haze this year as it did in 2015, according to the Head of the Peatland Restoration Agency in Indonesia, Mr Nazir Foead.
This is due to the determination from the government, palm oil and pulp and paper companies, and the community to make sure that steps are taken to ensure that fires do not break out on peatlands, added Mr Nazir, who was speaking at the third Sustainable World Resources dialogue on Friday (Apr 15).
The Peatland Restoration Agency was set up in January this year by Indonesian President Joko Widodo to restore about 2 million hectares of peatland that have been damaged by fires.
It is a move by the Indonesian government to prevent fires from happening, which is a shift from a focus on mitigation efforts in the past.
The agency is now in the process of creating more detailed maps to complement theOne Map initiative. This will be completed in the next two to three months.
It is also urging companies to play their part in restoring peatlands, which is something touched on by Singapore's Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli at the same event.
"Agro-forestry companies should take full responsibility for fire prevention and mitigation in their concessions. There must not be a repeat, for example, of last year's fires... Companies should invest in efforts to rehabilitate degraded and fire-prone peatlands. Companies must ensure that sustainable policies and practices don't stop with them," said Mr Masagos.
Restoration involves rewetting the carbon-rich peatlands, which burn easily when dry. The agency wants to create dams and canals to increase the water level in peatlands. It will also identify other types of crops besides palm oil that can grow well on peatlands, like the sago plant.
Mr Nazir added the agency is in talks with the Singapore Environment Council (SEC), to consider including companies' efforts in peatland restoration as a criteria in issuing the Singapore Green Label certification.
"SEC has just announced that it is now taking it further and working on a new category for products with pulp and paper, which will include in its criteria the requirement for peatland management and fire prevention standards. When fully developed, I believe this standard will be the most holistic certification standard for pulp and paper in the world," said Mr Masagos.

They mean "zero chance" that this year would not have indo haze?
Or they mean"zero chance" that indo would not burn as usual this year?
Edited by 13177, 15 April 2016 - 01:58 PM.
When we were flying up to Ho Chi Min City recently just north of Sedili and south of Mersing you could see 2 or 3 fires and the smoke was all travelling in the direction of Singapore.
I'd guess the smoke was below 1000 feet maybe below 500 ft so I'm not sure why that hot spot map above shows wind direction at 2500ft.
They mean "zero chance" that this year would not have indo haze?
Or they mean "zero chance" that indo would not burn as usual this year?
After reading the words 'zero chance', rest of article to me was just blah blah blah ..........
To me, the statement "'zero chance' it won't be the same as 2015 " means that it will be worse than last yearA director of an Indonesian company suspected of contributing to last year's haze did not turn up for an interview with the authorities here, even though he was served with a legal notice to attend it when he was in Singapore.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said yesterday that it has obtained a court warrant against the director to secure his attendance when he enters Singapore. It did not name him or his company, which is believed to have started fires or let its concessions burn.

Indonesia's largest pulp and paper firm is selling its vacant premises in Pioneer Road at an indicative value of above $40 million.

The site was put up for auction in 2007 by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore after Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) failed to pay more than $1.8 million in property taxes.
But the property was withdrawn from auction after the company settled the tax bill.

JAKARTA Indonesias Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) has hit out at Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), whose products were pulled off the shelves from supermarkets in Singapore over alleged links to firms responsible for forest fires that caused the haze, saying that the company was being uncooperative in providing data as part of BRGs peatland restoration efforts.
Mr Nazir Foead, who heads BRG, said many firms have submitted data that includes concession maps of their holdings. Indonesia's environment minister lashed out Monday at Singapore for failing to show "respect" after the city-state tried to question the director of an Indonesian company over last year's haze outbreak.
It was the latest row between the neighbours over the smog-belching Indonesian forest fires that choked Singapore, Malaysia and other parts of the region with acrid smog for weeks.
The blazes are an annual occurrence during the dry season as land is cleared using slash-and-burn methods but they were the worst for some time in 2015, with Singapore particularly angered at what it said was Jakarta's failure to take action.
Tempers frayed again after Singapore last month tried to call in the director of an Indonesian company suspected of being linked to the haze for questioning when the individual was in the city-state, Singaporean media reported.
Jakarta is furious at what it sees as a violation of its sovereignty, and Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar stepped up the angry rhetoric Monday.
"The most important principle is that cooperation is done with respect for each country's sovereignty," she told reporters in Jakarta.
"What has been done by Singapore, in my opinion, does not show their mutual respect to Indonesia."
Bakar said she was seeking a review of "of all issues of cooperation with Singapore concerning the environment and forestry".
She also pointed out that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a 10-member regional bloc that includes Indonesia and Singapore, had an agreement to deal with forest fires that was based on cooperation.
Her comments came after Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla insisted that Singapore cannot take legal action against Indonesian citizens.
The director of the firm called in by Singaporean authorities reportedly did not turn up for the interview despite being served with a legal notice and has since left the city-state. The individual or the firm were not named in the reports.
Singapore is seeking to take legal action under a 2014 law that allows the city-state to levy heavy fines on local or foreign companies that contribute to unhealthy levels of haze pollution in the city-state.
Singapore has also given notices to six Indonesian-based firms, asking them to explain what they are doing to put out fires on their land.

JAKARTA (AFP) - Singapore is refusing to back down in its pursuit of those responsible for haze-belching forest fires in South-east Asia last year, despite struggling to bring the perpetrators before the courts and drawing a sharp rebuke from neighbouring Indonesia.

Forest fires are part of an annual dry-season problem in Indonesia, started illegally to quickly and cheaply clear land for cultivation - particularly for palm oil and pulpwood.

But last year's haze outbreak was among the worst in memory, shrouding Malaysia, Singapore, and parts of Thailand in acrid smoke and forcing school closures as pollution reached hazardous levels and thousands fell sick across the region.

Singapore has served notice to six Indonesian companies it believes may have cleared land by burning but could target others as investigations continue, according to Singapore's ambassador to Indonesia Anil Kumar Nayar.

"We are going after, to put it starkly, the bad guys that are causing this problem," he told AFP in an interview last week.

However, the city-state's efforts to punish Indonesian companies under its own anti-haze law have become a flashpoint with Jakarta.

Singapore argues that international rules allow states to take action - even if harm is being caused by activities outside its jurisdiction - but Jakarta has questioned how Singapore could pursue Indonesian citizens for prosecution, especially in the absence of a ratified extradition treaty between the neighbours.

The latest sabre-rattling came after Singapore issued a court warrant in May to detain a director of an Indonesian company linked to the haze while he was in the city-state.

Afterwards, Indonesia's Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar said that she would be reviewing her ministry's cooperation with Singapore on environmental issues.

"Singapore cannot step further into Indonesia's legal domain," Bakar told reporters in June. Her spokesman declined to comment further on the matter when contacted.

Nayar reiterated that Singapore wasn't crossing any line pursuing these companies and was within its rights to enforce its law.

"We are not doing something that is extraordinary. It is not targeting any country, or anybody's sovereignty," he said.

The law threatens local and foreign firms with fines of up to S$100,000 for every day Singapore endures unhealthy haze pollution.

So far just two of the companies have responded to the court order, Nayar said, without naming specific firms.

Singapore has repeatedly asked Indonesia for details about companies - such as maps showing who owns what concessions - but says Jakarta has not provided any information.

Singapore would "continue to press", Nayar said, but added the evidence needed to prosecute these companies could be found by other means.

"We could go that way as well, but at the end of the day this is part of a legal process. We want to be working with the Indonesian government," he said.

One of Indonesia's main arguments is that a regional approach to solving the haze crisis would be more effective than individual action.

"They (Singapore) know our view on this, on how we can best address this issue of haze through the Asean mechanism," ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir told AFP.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has an agreement to create a haze-free region by 2020, though it took 14 years to be fully ratified.

Nayar says regional progress on curbing haze has been slow.

Fellow Asean member Malaysia, which also suffers during the haze outbreaks, has expressed interest in adopting its own law similar to Singapore's to pursue errant companies.

Jakarta has promised tougher action in the wake of last year's haze disaster, which turned skies yellow in Indonesia's part of Borneo island and dealt the economy a US$16 billion blow.

The government announced in May it would no longer grant new land for palm oil plantations, and established a new agency to restore millions of hectares of carbon-rich peatlands susceptible to fires.
With the increase in hotspots, wind direction and dry weather recently. Look like the haze may arrive any time.
Now only Jul, if haze really come then we have to suffer even longer period of haze period liao! Cause usually haze should only come from Aug onwards.
Flight HAZE, arriving soon

Some 300 fire-linked hot spots detected in IndonesiaA forest fire is seen burning from a helicopter belonging to the Indonesian National Board of Disaster Management in Pelalawan, Riau province, Sumatra island on June 13.PHOTO: REUTERSPUBLISHED1 HOUR AGOArlina ArshadIndonesiaCorrespondent In JakartaAlmost 300 hot spots were detected over Sumatra and Kalimantan yesterday that were due to forest and land fires, and the number is expected to increase in the coming dry months.
The figures were disclosed as news emerged of an interview given by the Singapore envoy in Jakarta, who said the Republic would continue to pursue those responsible for haze-belching forest fires in South-east Asia last year.
"We are going after, to put it starkly, the bad guys that are causing this problem," Mr Anil Kumar Nayar told the Agence France-Presse news agency last week. He said Singapore was not crossing any line in pursuing these companies and was within its rights to enforce its law.
"We are not doing something that is extraordinary. It is not targeting any country or anybody's sovereignty," he added.
His comments came amid tensions between Indonesia and Singapore over the latter's decision to take action against a director of an Indonesian firm linked to last year's regional haze, considered to be one of the worst in recent history.
The crisis affected millions across South-east Asia and caused more than half a million Indonesians to suffer from severe respiratory illnesses. Errant pulp and paper firms have been blamed for the fires.
Satellites yesterday recorded 288 hot spots - 245 hot spots over Sumatra island and 43 over Kalimantan - Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.
The figure is small compared with about 3,000 at the height of last year's crisis, but he warned that the "potential for fires will increase" in the drier months of July to September. "Dry conditions, scarcity of water and difficulty in accessing the locations will make it hard to douse the fires," he said.
Two helicopters and two air-tractor waterbombers were deployed to spray water from the air in Riau province, which had 26 hot spots. Troops, police and personnel from other agencies are controlling the blazes on the ground, he said. "Most of the hot spots are a result of intentional burning," he said. He did not say who were behind the fires but advised the community not to clear land by setting fires.
Last Friday, major palm oil companies said they have ditched a landmark "zero deforestation" pact, saying the government's recent efforts to strengthen its certification standards were sufficient.
The 2014 Indonesia Palm Oil Pledge, or Ipop, was hailed as one that would boost efforts to fight rampant deforestation, annual forest fires and choking haze.

Ours is up to 55 low, 56-155 elevated, 156-255 high, above 255 very high. The 'elevated' category looks wierd. It will mean that even w/o burning, we still get elevated levels. Over time, people will get used & numb to the elevated levels.
Elevated could b the most common psi reading...
Maybe thats why they re-word our local ratings. Instead of good, moderate, unhealthy, very unhealthy, hazardous...

We can keep complaining the haze, but this is the kind of response we get from the Vice President of Indonesia.

Speaking in the VP's office on 26 August morning, Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf said that the smoke caused by the forest fire which was blown to Singapore is something common due to the wind.

He said that it is up to Singapore's Government to complain about the haze. "As long as there are lots of fire here and the wind blow to the north, the smoke must have reached Singapore. Nobody wants the smoke to reach Singapore. It is just that we can not control the wind. How do you control the wind?"

Jusuf stated that the Indonesia Government has put in its maximum effort to put off the fire. He added that the Government has also conducted Emergency Operations which involved armies and armadas to detect and battle the fire. "We have deployed helicopters, aeroplanes, and people to put off the fire. The Government has done the best," he said.

Asked about the complaints from Singapore, Jusuf only said, "It is up to them to complain. Whom are they going to complain to? Are they going to complain to the wind?"
Indo really cannot make it, created the haze and yet say cannot control the wind and bring the haze to sg!

Indonesia environment team threatened with death investigating haze
- Posted05 Sep 2016 14:57
-
- Updated05 Sep 2016 15:10
: Dozens of Indonesian men, suspected of being hired by an oil palm plantation company, threatened to kill environmental investigators checking on fires on Sumatra island, the environment ministry said.
The incident illustrates the difficulties Indonesia faces tackling the illegal burning of vegetation to clear land for palm oil and pulp and paper plantations that causes clouds of smoke every dry season, which at times blanket the region, raising fears for public health and air travel.
The ministry said a group of up to 100 men detained seven investigators for about 12 hours on the weekend and threatened to burn them alive and dump their bodies in a river at an oil palm plantation in Rokan Hulu, Riau province.
The team was following up on satellite images showing "hot spots", or suspected fires, in a concession of PT Andika Permata Sawit Lestari (APSL) oil palm plantation company.
There were "strong indications" the mob was deployed by the company, the ministry said in a statement.
"With this incident, the investigation of PT APSL will become our top priority," Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya said in the statement, referring to both suspected forest encroachment by the company and the detention of the team.
"The environment ministry will investigate this and take strict action in accordance with the law," she said.
A company official, contacted by Reuters on Monday, declined to comment.
The team was released only after lengthy negotiations involving police and after they agreed to delete photographic evidence and to leave behind two vehicles and equipment. The equipment and vehicles were recovered the next day.
The investigators, however, managed to retrieve video footage shot by a drone showing thousands of hectares of forest had been burned illegally in and around the APSL concession.
"As far as the eye can see, an area that was once peatland has been converted into oil palm plantation," Nurbaya said.
Plantation companies drain swampy peatland before planting their crops and the dried-out peat is particularly flammable and often catches fire when companies set fires to clear vegetation.
More than 450 individuals have been arrested in connection with land and forest fires this year.
Under Indonesian law, companies found guilty of clearing land by burning can be fined up to 10 billion rupiah (US$735,000), and the management faces up to 10 years in jail. Companies that fail to control fires started elsewhere but which spread into their concession land also face punishment.
Smoke from fires in Riau often drifts over nearby Singapore and Malaysia. Air pollution in Singapore rose to "unhealthy" levels late last month after a spike in fires in the area.

Now I know why Indonesia will never able to put off the forest fire. Just look at this photo from today ST. 14 person holding the water hose, all those standing behind basically wayang like doing SAF log PT.
Will cause all the tiny holes in the fire hoses.
Frankly, looks normal to me. Whoever drag my fire hose on the floor sure kena scolded by me. The rough terrain or the normal road will tear these rubber hoses.
Will cause all the tiny holes in the fire hoses.
