This is a very real - and worrying - problem for our society now.

Not sure whether is it a case of of social media and the general access to news now make it easier for kids to hear/learn about other teenage suicides, and then they get new ideas and do copycat cases, or

is it that this is a natural problem of a developed country. Two generations ago, there were kids maybe dying from lack of food, nutrients or medical care, and all of them would be looking for ways to fend for themselves to stay alive as their parents were busy trying to feed the family and have a shelter over their heads. But now that kids have more than enough food to eat, good medical care and doting parents who can afford houses/cars plus handphones/tablets, etc., they do not seem to value lives as much.

Typical reasons have been speculated to be pressure to do well in studies and BGR.

The education has evolved into a pressure cooker for the kids over the last ~20 yr, so maybe the govt should find some ways to educate the kids that above good grades, live is first and foremost the most important.

There have been actually quite a number of suicide cases mushrooming up On/Off but its rarely reported on media unless if its like the bullying type or relationship or that type..... They don't mention much (except some that somehow slip out and for whatever reasons make it to the press) The parents also feel ashamed too that they may have pushed the kid too hard and want privacy and schools also are tight lipped about this kind of things as they don't want their school named too....... but reality is that its happening.... some have hanged themselves from ceiling fan in their houses......maybe those whom jump down might be reported as it becomes open fact and press reports it...

Sometimes it's not the parents who are always stressing the kids - although I'm sure a lot does do that.

There are times when the kids themselves want to excel and so pressure themselves. And this is not difficult to comprehend as SGP also forever want to be number one in everything, and Govt has also kept telling the citizens that we need to continue to strive to do things better, faster, cheaper in order to survive and thrive...

Ours is a pressure-cooker society. The kids themselves might not know/think that it's ok to slack a bit sometimes.

And I'm not blaming the govt, just that since the govt has a hand (not that they were wrong - SGP might not have come this far if the pioneers and some bit younger people didn't work so hard) in this, it is only natural for them to do something to ensure that this is sustainable.

You're spot-on in the second para.

to stay competitive is what the nation have to do especially for small country, they can't promote the country as stress free, care free and relax, then everyone will really think they are like French.

At the traffic light. The green man turn red and as we are anticipating the lights to turn green. Two Ang Mo suddenly cross the road. First is an Ang Mo girl and behind follow by a breaded Ang Mo man. They cross nvm, but they slowly stroll down like its still green man. Lights turned green and they are barely halfway through and doesn't even take the effort to dash.

One of the car honked them. The Ang Mo guy then showed his middle finger.

I think this made everyone hot liao and all cars just chiong out (including me).

I can see from my rear mirror the 2 idiots got stuck in between lanes as other cars drive past. The guy is waving both his hands up like gesturing and farking us.

    Philippines stressed

MANILAAn anti-American rant by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, later recanted, cast a shadow on Washingtons bid to bolster ties with Asian allies such as Manila to help offset Chinas growing might.

U.S. President Barack Obama scrapped a planned meeting with Mr. Duterte in Laos on Tuesday after the outburst, sparking strains with one of Washingtons oldest Asian allies. Mr. Duterte later apologized. Still, the U.S.-Philippine tensions contrasted with President Rodrigo Dutertes apparent determination to improve tattered relations with China.

Mr. Duterte, who took office in June, had been set for his first meeting with Mr. Obama on the sidelines of a regional summit in Laos. But before leaving Manila on Monday he reacted angrily to reporter questions about how he would respond should Mr. Obama express concerns on human rights grounds about the deaths of over 2,000 people in an antidrug campaign being waged by Mr. Dutertes administration.

Mr. Duterte blamed the U.S., which ran the Philippines as a colony until 1946, for spawning the countrys current problems and swore in exasperation. In an aside, he used the phrase son of a whore, drawing scorn from the international press who took it as an insult directed straight at Mr. Obama.

Clearly, hes a colorful guy, Mr. Obama said, questioning whether such talks could be productive. Soon after, the White House saidthe bilateral meeting was off.

Later Monday night, Mr. Duterte appeared to regret his outburst. I do not want to quarrel with [Obama]. Hes the most powerful president of any country on the planet, Mr. Duterte said after touching down in Laos. He blamed State Department officials for needling him by continually raising the issue of human rights, something Mr. Duterte contends matters less than curbing crime.

On Tuesday, a Philippine government spokesman said both sides decided to postpone the bilateral meeting to a later, undetermined date. President Duterte today affirmed that he continues to value the alliance with the United States, the spokesman said.

Mr. Duterte also issued a separate statement on Tuesday, accepting blame for the meetings postponement, adding we also regret that it came across as a personal attack on the U.S. president. He said the Philippines aims to chart an independent foreign policy while promoting closer ties with all nations, especially the U.S.

Mr. Duterte is experiencing a rocky transition from local politics to the global stage. He served for three decades as mayor of the southern Philippine city of Davao, becoming hugely popular for his tough approach to governance and for his loose-talking style.

There will be a metamorphosis, Mr. Duterte promised shortly after his election in May, agreeing to become more presidential and stop swearing in public. From being a caterpillar, [I] will blossom into a butterfly.

The shift hasnt occurred. Mr. Duterte has regularly blasted critics, including United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and international human rights groups for questioning his extreme stance on law and order.

His provocation of the U.S., which has been a treaty ally of Manila since 1951, demonstrates how he is struggling to adapt to high office, said Richard Javad Heydarian of Manilas De La Salle University.

His street-smart brand of politics brought him astonishing success in Philippine politics, and in frontier cities like Davao, but global affairs is another ballgame altogether, Mr. Heydarian said.

Despite Mr. Duterte undiplomatic remarks over the U.S. and its colonial record, the Philippines has more recently become a prime beneficiary of U.S. aid. It reached record levels this year as the two allies pushed ahead with a defense pact signed by Mr. Obama and Mr. Dutertes predecessor, Benigno Aquino III in 2014. That is a key plank of Mr. Obamas strategy of rebalancing to the Asia-Pacific region and includes the planned deployment of U.S. troops to the Philippines for the first time in two decades.

On top of $79 million in military aid for 2016, Manila is set to receive $42 million from a White House initiative to build the maritime capacity. The U.S. has also supplied Manila with secondhand military equipment, as the Philippines seeks to restock its outmoded armed forces.

The Philippines also benefits from decades of military cooperation against local rebels, helpful for Mr. Duterte as he faces new threats of Islamist terrorism from Abu Sayyaf group, whose militants killed 14 people in a Davao bombing last week.

Such cooperation is likely to continue despite Mr. Dutertes erratic behavior though Mr. Duterte could seek to restrict defense cooperation, Mr. Heydarian said.

Obamas diplomatic snub clearly shows growing strain in bilateral relations, but I expect the two allies to sort things out behind the scenes, he said.

While the Duterte administration appears to be struggling to formulate a coherent foreign policy, it has been consistent in seeking to repair ties with China, which have deteriorated since Mr. Aquino took Beijing to a Hague tribunal in 2013 over the territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

The tribunal ruled in the Philippines favor July, striking down Beijings expansive claims to the South China Sea. China rejected the ruling. Mr. Duterte said he would not raise the matter at this weeks summit, a diplomacy that Mr. Heydarian said showed that the de-escalation of maritime tensions with China was a central pillar of Mr. Dutertes foreign policy.

Yet, any fissures in U.S.-Philippine ties that cast doubts on Washingtons commitment to protect Manila could make Beijing less likely to negotiate with Mr. Duterte over the South China Sea, he said.

Pissing off both USA & China.

    Hmmmmmm. Dunno what's he thinking.

Woman, 85, sues slimming centre over $400k treatment

The family of a diabetic 82-year-old woman, who wanted to lose weight for health reasons, visited a branch of London Weight Management in 2013 after seeing its TV commercial touting a weight-loss trial session for $18.

They were eventually persuaded into signing a nearly $400,000 package with the slimming centre.

The treatments not only failed to improve her health, but they also caused Madam Gan Siew Hong to suffer diarrhoea, a skin rash and pus discharge, she claimed in a lawsuit filed in the High Court seeking compensation of close to $450,000 from the slimming centre.

Madam Gan, now 85, wants a full refund of the more than $400,000 her son paid for weight-loss treatments and products.

She is also seeking damages of about $41,000 for medical fees incurred in treating the alleged adverse effects of the services.

In court documents obtained by The Straits Times, Madam Gan claimed the centre repeatedly pressured her, her son and her husband into signing up for the package.

On July 23, 2013, she, together with her son, Mr Tan Kok Wah, and husband, Mr Tan Ee Leong, went to the centre's Ngee Ann City branch after seeing its commercial.

She said her son and husband had asked for a medical assessment before starting the programme but were assured by the therapist that it was suitable for her.

Apart from diabetes, she has a heart condition, high blood pressure, kidney problems and water retention in her legs.

At the trial session, her son was persuaded to pay $10,914 for an eight-month package. Six days later, while she was going through her third session, her son and husband were "brainwashed" into extending the package to two years for an additional $66,768.

Her son paid a portion using two credit cards, and a therapist accompanied the family home to collect a cheque for the balance.

Two days later, Madam Gan was made to believe that she needed more than two years to see progress, the lawsuit claimed.

A therapist again accompanied the family home, where her son made out two cheques totalling $321,000 for a six-year package.

He also paid $4,662.40 for "detox drinks", which allegedly caused her to suffer diarrhoea, and $3,595.29 for ginger masks to reduce the swelling in her legs. After she was told by a skin doctor that the rash on her abdomen which oozed pus was an allergic reaction to products applied on her skin, she returned to the centre for more treatments. She finally stopped in June 2014.

In its defence, London said it is willing to refund her the unused portion of the package amounting to $43,408.15 out of goodwill.

The centre said Madam Gan's family declared only that she had diabetes and that it is not liable for injuries resulting from non-disclosure of medical history.

The centre also said it had advised her to seek medical advice on the suitability of its treatment and products and told her that successful weight loss depended on a balanced diet and regular exercise.

The centre also said it had advised her to seek medical advice on the suitability of its treatment and products and told her that successful weight loss depended on a balanced diet and regular exercise.

At the age of 82, actually should use the time to see your loved ones ... have time for them... rather than go for losing weight...

Even if must go due to health, then go to hospital since you have a few health issues... rather than go to these slimming centres ...

Had this incident occurred in a restaurant at MBFC

I had just joined a new team and was having team lunch at Crystal Jade MBFC, was going to the cashier and saw this "Anton Casey" type character arguing with the manager with his lunch party waiting the lift.

Manager: Sir your Amex was declined do you have another card?

Caucasian: No I don't have another card, here is my secretary name card call her to settle this.

    Manager: But we can't...

Caucasian: Don't waste my time, call her to settle this

Manager: Ok, (but did not return the Amex card)

Caucasian: Give me back my Amex card, call my secretary to sort this out.

Manager: Reluctant give back card, told staff to call the secretary.

Wished I intervened on this, but that time new team I also didn't know how my team would react if I started screwing the idiot on the spot lol.

Boss if I was in your team

    and you screw the idiot

I would respect you a lot.

When we pass judgement we often stand on high moral ground without really examine all the evidence present but too often rely on hear-say or mass media. I am guilty too.

Let me pose a hypothetical question:

What happens when you had been saving all your money to buy your dream car eg Maserati / Mercedes / BMW. It is just one week old. You treat the car like your child because you love it so much.

Without you knowing your real child uses his metal toy car and scratch all the 4 doorsleavinghis flower drawing pattern behind. As if that is not enough, he goes to the bonnet and jump on it because it makes noises like a drum resulting in multiple dent. Being creative, your child goes into the car because the door was left open for whatever reason and goes drawing in your dashboard and car seats with the permanent marker pen that he found lying on the floor.

Just how many would look straight in your child's eye and say, child you cannot do this and cannot repeat it, I forgive you.

Some would be so mad and start beating the "poor" kid.

A few crazy car lover may even accidentally injured the "poor" kid.

*Material things more important than living things?"

Talk is cheap but wecan tell who we really are only when we are made to face the real situation.
