Any cam can do to problem is how troublesome. U might just forget to turn it on or worse, it ran out of space or battery life
Should just get a proper car cam if you really want to use one in the car even the cheapest one is better then nothing.

true ... you already spent more than 50k on your car .... what is another $300+ to give it some added protection ?

anyway, for first timers, based on current reviews, seems the finevu and blackvue are the more popular models , dun "stinge" on it and get a cheaper model .... just pay for a more expensive model and get it done over with once and for all !

Dont worry abt me. I have already bought 10 car cams n counting. biggrin.gif

This nokia car cam app, symDVR, is a very useful app for those who want to try to use it as a car cam. U can set it to record upon connecting to power adapter. It has gps coordinates, speed, altitude n date/time stamping. Auto overwrite, adjust record duration(100mb to 2G per video file) n auto answer call n mute recording. All the various functions of a car cam.

It is useful when u using a local/overseas rental car, no need to port ur car cam over to the rental car. Late forget to remove, rental company kio tio.

Getting the cheapest one may not be a good option. I found out that there are many of these dirt cheap car cam video footage are like sh!t. The video is interpolated, the lens is of low quality but they upscale it. Thus resulting in blur or low quality footage which maybe useless in an accident. I bought one of these at USD30 w/ free shipping to try which promise of HD 720p quality. It went straight back to the box after I view the footage.

right.... stupid me rolleyes.gif I finally installed the blackvue 400 I got about 3 months ago from Xavier (you remember me bro? I was in a white Mz6. You tried to update the firmware cos I said I only had Apple Macs. Your 'droid ran out of juice. I managed to update by bribing my office techie with a starbucks coffee...) Anyway, long story about why I never bothered installing until today, so we'll ignore that and get to my stupidity...

Video is nice and clear but... its upside down. I installed the camera upside down! bugger.... Any advice on best practices removing it and installing again? I don't want to tear out the solar film accidently.

Haha bro yes i remembered! No worries for the tape, simply press the unlock button to slide out the unit first. Use a card or thread to slide in between the 3m tape & gently push it to remove it. It wont damage the flim as the tape is specially for plastic. After removing, simply locate the extra tape in the box & stick it up again. If u face any problem, i can fix it for u:) Coffee on me this time haha
    Cheers!

    Hi Micarforum,

The menu settings for F520 & GSE580 +/- is about the same.
The additional settings that F520 has are SCENE & ISO settings.

F520 does not have the followings:
    -GPS
-Have motion detection but no setting for the motion sensitivity
-No IR but has white LED Light ( Can be turn on with a toggle of the joystick) - can use for torch light
-Does not have Auto Day Night Function but can be manually set
-Have date & time stamp but no car plate no stamp

    F520 have the followings :
-BL-5C battery ( Not built in like GSE580)
    -Higher Resolution for still images 16Megapixels ( 4608*3456 )
-No interval time file saving technology ( No Gap between 2 files )

As for night video, i am still playing around with the settings available.
If i leave as default setting, the night recording is almost the same as GSE580.

Currently i am doing Promotion for F520 only.

    thanks for the detailed comparison.

For the F520's white led light, wouldn't it create glare/reflections on the windscreen at night? would appreciate if you can provide night sample video with and without the white led light on.

Secondly, does it come with auto-power cut-off when the car's battery drops below a certain threshold, i.e. like power magic of blackvue. (this is useful when camera is in motion detection mode when parked)

Very useful review, like I do, running all the cameras concurrently n review the videos.

This was what I was trying to put across regarding Finevu CR300HD. Overall video is sharp but when zoom in, it is pixelated. The video also showed it. Here is a screenshot of it while stationary n number plates are of those in front of the parking lot.

might go for the ITB-100HD. since its a bit cheaper than dr400ghd(20bucks or so) and no heat issues. the wider angle is also nice to have. i doubt the lower frame rate of 24 will make such a big diff.
have used the ITB70 for the last 2years and all ok. also using the dr350 in another car. so will move both the older cams for the rear and have ITB100 take up station in front.

CR300 have better light balance control & is sharper in different circumstances, & imo its the actual quality that is more important as we will seldom zoom in to check the plates, in hit n run cases/ accident the car will definetly be near us , even hit & run it will need to be near enough to hit us.

    Major Comparison:

Morever its 5MP compared to the other 2MP.
Tested during my 1 week ICT in tuas, daily under hot sun (unless raining) from 8-6. No problem so far for finevu.
Pros & cons for all 3.

    Hi Micarforum,

    You are welcome.

I ever tried to turn on the LED light for few seconds & then turn it off. As for the recording, it already overwritten sometimes back.
Another worry is that will TP stop me when turning on the White LED light ON on F520 while driving?

What i do with the LED light is that i turn the unit ON, OFF the Screen & Turn on the LED light. ( This work as a torch light ) LOL..

Anyway will try it this weekend & upload the recording as soon as i have it, for reference.

IR or LED light i believe somehow will still have a slight glare, please correct me if i am wrong.
I believe thats the reason why F series having protruding lens.

To what i understand CCTV camera with IR LED will also have slight glare. IR work best on Monochrome image.

F520 does not comes with the monitoring of your car battery level. You will need to install it separately.

I hope this information helps in a way.

Actually wat u need is a good reliable one. For parking, I agree you need one that is clear enough. When driving, the best bet is still your eyes and mouth. U see plate, u shout the number to the unit. Some plate even eye also cannot see, dun expect the unit can see. So reliability is more impt. Cost u know when u shout, its recorded, not unit is hang or rebooting.

Cost if its not reliable, how clear also not I important, you might not even capture it.

    My 2 cts worth.

Not the clearest in terms of light balance & sharpness in actual quality. Shape is not as compact too. Finevu is more popular than blackvue now.

Itb is compact la. similar shape to blackvue. At least more compact than finevue. Anyway to the other poster, I get my units from gmarket in Korea. And have it brought to me by my staff when we meet. Only issue is sort of no warranty. I can always send tr unit back to Korea and have my staff chase the seller for it. But then this is outside their job scope. But at least I save close to 200 bucks for the equivalent blackvue combo sold in Singapore. Can buy for 310-320 in Korea.

They have the calibre to earn but do you have?

Their risk is not able to sell a single set but if you have the foresight and you are a risk taker, by all means go ahead.

This kind of statement is ridiculous.

Ordering online has its pros n cons. If you are willing to take the risk and don't mind the hassle of sending back yourself if there are any issues by all means go ahead.

Everyone knows the cost drops if you cut out the middleman. If you buy a basket of fruits or a simple product, no problem cos itz idiot proof.

In car recorder is not a simple product in my view. I also know you can import a car and save some moolah but I take the chance it may turn out to be a lemon.

I say let the middleman earn their keep cos in some cases they deserve it.

    Hi Refresher75,

Please pardon me too if my English is bad.

For those who purchase any DOD product with me, they knew that i will start the warranty 7 days later.
Meaning if they bought the product on 1 April 2012, then the warranty will only start on 8 April 2012. ( 1 year warranty ).
The warranty will then expired on 8 April 2013.

    Currently i am selling F520 $288.

For April Promotion : For every F520 purchased, the buyer will received a DOD 32GB SDHC Class 10 memory card for free.

Huh? A recorder is way simpler that many other electronic gadgets out there. It's just typical risk of buying online. That said, what makes you think buying things locally with middle man is better. I had my fair share of local retailers telling that too bad lor. It's like that one. Or try to Siam you whenever there is an issue. So I rather take the savings and the risk. It's rare to find merchants like shoChong

I dunnoe about you. I never buy any electronic products above $50 without a warranty.

Even hairdryer oso I want warranty. When I say not simple, I also mean involving gadgets having to install, wiring and software etc.

You can stomach the risks fine, I dun, at least not for small savings.

When i say middleman, I am talking about large established ones or those with good track record. Anybody else is just a reseller to me. So if I find a good middleman, I let him earn his keep.

the blackvue costs $320 from ebay but over $500 when bought locally
the ebay version has warranty too but you got to pay shipping fees
its almost a 50% savings as compared to buying locally and you still get warranty, only the warranty will take 2 weeks to process

of course if you think $200 savings is little then this won't be very significant to you, but judging by your 1st line where you demand warranty for a $50 product, i think every penny counts for you
so you might want to check out ebay from time to time

Wow, the DOD V660 looks good in terms of specs and warranty. Is it tape-mount or suction? How does it compare to the Finevu?

    Hi bro, its suction cup.
V660 is HD720p but comes with LCD & with local warranty, Finevu is Full HD 1080p without LCD & with overseas warranty.
Good thing about V660 is that it can support up to 128GB & is value for money, where as Finevu has built in "power magic" & parking surveillance mode.
Both has its good factors & is dependable on user's requirements, shape preferences & budget.
    Cheers!

F520 will be better as it is Full HD while V660 is only HD. Of course, the F520 will be comparatively more expensive.

Would like to know too. Which one suit what type of users? And how does the camera gets its power? through the cigarette lighter?

I believe suitability is your preference and depends also on your budget. Yes, it gets the power from the cigarette lighter or you can opt to wire it directly to your car battery.

    Hi all,

I need to ride on this thread to create awareness.

    Really sorry.

Im selling my BlackVue 400hd. Just RMA frm Xavier in mar.

Cam in perfect condition with no foggy on lens. Can test before buying.

Reason to sell cos of the heat issue as I parked not under shelter at work n at home thus can't afford to ruin the cam just like that. Currently the Cam will only switch on when I drive and off during parking.

The cam will comes with power magic n 16gb microsd card.

I'm selling at $250 for a 1 mth old cam.

Currently in my car and once cfm will swap at the workshop and selller will bear the installation cost only.

    Interested pls pm me.

    Thks

Just to share some experience on FineVu CR-300HD.

    Information on Setup:
    Vehicle: Honda Jazz GE8
Mount Position: In front of the rear view mirror
Mount Method: 3M Windscreen Tape (included as part of CR-300HD package)
Wiring: Direct to fuse-box via an adapter (don't want to cut the original power adapter) - details to check with ZMC mechanics
Additional: Circular Polarization Len (CPL) filter

Using SanDisk Class 6 Micro SDHC 32GB which has a higher specs (30MB/s) than Transcend Class 10 Micro SDHC (20MB/s). No issue so far on 2 separate cars with different driving habits and lifestyle. All videos are captured with no lapse nor any form of hanging issue. Constantly subject to under the sun condition both at work place and at home due to open air carpark. While the recorder gets a little warm when park under the sun for extensive hours and frequent activation for recording (motion-detection), it is rather acceptable range (no infra red thermometer to check actual temperature). So far no impact to the recorder nor the CPL filter.

Being a Mac user, I am able to view the video clips from the micro SDHC fine. However, to change configuration, I will need to use VMware Fusion to load a Windows VM to run the configuration utility that works only on Windows. No complains since so far, I am not aware of any drive recorder that fully supports Mac OS X officially. The common issue is that the utility and/or customized viewer that come with the driver recorders are written for Windows platform.

The main reason to finally go with CR-300HD instead of other comparable models (such as BlackVue DR-400) is the close resemblance of functionality as compared to the Japanese drive recorder, Fujitsu TEN DREC3000 which I have been using for past 3+ years. And I have chosen to use with the CPL filter mainly due to the incline angle of the front windscreen of Honda Jazz/Fit GE8 which will cause quite significant reflection. CR-300HD is one of those rare drive recorder that offers polarization filter option.

Er, i'm confused. Isn't the class rating standardised across all vendors? How can class 6 have a higher reading and writing speed than class 10? Would it be more accurate to say that it has the capability to reach 30mb/s in an ideal state but minimum for fragmented state, it will have at least 6mb/s?

I am having problems with my Sandisk Class6 in my CR300HD. After a week of continuous recording, it would hang the CR300HD thus causing the time indicated to be inaccurate. It usually hang n then back to normal, hang n then back to normal, etc..... Until I remove it n reformat the microSD card.

Still waiting for Transcend microSD to come in stock.

I haven't perform in-depth test for the real throughput. SanDisk is well known for its ability of good throughput and close to its specs. Some other brands may be higher class on paper but can't even match the throughput of SanDisk lower class.
