Not complicated at all.. Born in SG. Spent my growing up years in Palembang, KL, Jakarta and (finally) Singapore. Met my gf and did my 2yrs here.
97/98 riots.. place where is stay is relatively safe cos it's in the (then) outskirts of Jakarta, where many expats also lived. The community engaged private security(armed) to keep the estate safe. But my dad still find it unsafe and managed to sneaked us out to the airport.
When i reached the airport, the whole farking place is like a refugee camp. Everyone sitting around waiting to catch the next flight out. If i'm not wrong, SIA actually doubled the number of flights for the JKT - SGP route during that few days. Dad managed used his contacts to get us economy seats into SG.
Some of my friends(who are Malaysians) even more happening. The Malaysian embassy pick them up (also using armed escorts) and they spent a few nights at the Malaysian Embassy. Then their Air Force sent in C-130 to evacuate them.

Coastal Routes are always nicer. One side is the sea. And there are more interesting towns and stopovers along the coast. The view is defintely much better. Road 5, west coast, road 3 east coast.
